Changes v Port
To the poster who asked about Oscar, he was off with concussion and blurred vision from early in the last quarter, which left the backline very short. I like Smith as a back flanker maybe instead of Bernie who has surprised me this year. I expected him to play less. Bring in a tall back for Bernie. Port have Ryder, Westoff and Dixon for us to cointend with and yesterday Cox was too big a task for Pedo. The backup ruckman looks to be shared between Weid, Smith and Pedo. The future is with Weid and he is taller. I wonder who will go to Jack Watts? We got smashed in the midfield and in the contests it was the same as the Hawthorn game with all our hard nuts drwan into the contest in over the ball and when it flips out we have no-one on the outside and the ball runs free. WE stopped running an played mark and kick stuff again. That is fixable. I also don't think Melksham was 100% as at qurter time and 3 quarter time he was having a lot of work on his lower leg. I expect that after the break we will have plenty to choose from Out: Pedo, Bernie and Trac (playing on reputation and his delivery under pressure has been poor not sure how many tackles he makes either) In Weid, Frost/Petty/Declan (take your pic) and Garlett. Garlett will never be outstanding at casey but he will bring pace into the team

Fat Ed wants QB as a Collingwood home game.
When I first read this I was annoyed by a few things. Ed as usual taking his argument public rather than negotiating with MFC in private. Yes I appreciate MFC getting the home game and the finances for the last 20 years but looking back early on the crowds weren't there and the fixture was in doubt because Collingwood supporters didn't attend our home game. It is Ed's sense of entitlement that annoys me. Now it is a genuine blockbuster Eddy wants in on the cash. In a fair deal moving forward I have no problem sharing the gate in the future and expect we play each other twice. Given that the ANZAC eve game is our other blockbuster the home game for us should coincide with us being away aginst Richmond. Will Ed be prepared to give up another of his MCG blockbuster games or does he want another MCG game. We have been at the G our home once in the last 6 weeks and that was as the away team. If he wants to negotiate what is he prepared to give up. My perception is that he doesn't think the MND game will go beyond this year. He has stated that he is happy to let us have this year but is he imlpying it wont happen next year and I thought the AFL managed the fixture. If they get the home game on Queens birthday then I expect MFC to take the MND game to another game as we have owned it and marketed it and pay homage to one of our favourite sons. I know emotion rarely motivates the players but I really hope Viney is reminding everybody of what Collingwood did in the last game last season and makes sure it never happens again. Give them hell!!

What a legend, so pleased to follow his career from start to finish. Still close to his team mates and their spiritual leader.

Post Match Discussion - Round 10
What an awesome day and well done MFC. How well have this club embraced the N.T and did anyone notice (sorry if alreadu mentioned) that the club went to the trouble of getting the song recorded in the local dialect. They played it as we came on the ground. Channel 7's coverage of the pre game and story on translating "Grand old flag" intoArrernte language were first class. Go dees.

Post Match Discussion - Round 8
That is a good win but we cannot expect to get 83 inside 50's every week and we were not that efficient with 41 scores. I still think we are too easy to score against and while we have the 2nd most points scored we are the in the bottom 7 for points scored against. Defence wins flags. We have played and beaten 4 of the current bottom five teams so there is so room for improvement if and when we get past Carlton. Then the tough stuff starts. Some random thoughts The team looks much better with Tommy Mac in and allows Hoges to roam far and wide. Oliver had a staggering 11 tackles which is uperb given he is such an attacking player. Fritch gets the ball and tackles. Gold Coast had Lynch out but he was their only major out but it is a concern that their NEAFL team did not score a goal against the Brisbane NEAFL team. I thought that was Harmes breakout game and his work rate was sensational. I really like Salem off the half back flank. Next week despite being at the G will be our 4th away game in a row, who does the draw? It is ok to still have lots of room for improvement after an 11 goal win but the real test is yet to come

Changes vs Gold Coast
Re Viney he hasn't played under match conditions since late last year. He may well be fit to play this weekend but I will bet London to a brick that he will be mighty sore and may not come up the week after. So play limited time in the seniors or slightly longer at Casey.? I would leave it to the List load manager Charlie Allen to decide. I suspect the club will be looking at the fixture and deciding which strategy best has Viney ready for the next month and the likes of the Crows and Collingwood

Is Brayshaw more rounded than the Trac?
Too early to call who is more polished. When recruited together all they wanted to do was play in the same team. Trac does a knee in year 1 and is a season behind. Gus has a great first year, gets knocked out and basically loses a season and a bit. I would be interested to see how many games they have played tgether. On the weekend, don't forget Trac spent 4 days in hospital prior to playing and was a little sluggish. That was the best game I have seen from Gus since his first year so it is a bit early to call who is better. I seem them as 2 different styles of footballer who will compliment each other and form a very formidable team with Oliver and Viney in the midfield. I like that each brings something different to the mid field and hope Angus signs up soon.

Brayshaw Oliver Gawn Hogan Hibberd Jones with apologies to several others

Changes vs Gold Coast
Agree NO change unless there is an injury on track. Weid stays and does the relief ruck work as Tommy isn't match fit enough yet to take on rucking duties. Salem will not be back from a brokem thumb after 1 week and personally I would give Viney time at Casey as he has had no match time since last year.

Leigh Fisher (ex Saint) is one of the umpires for the St Kilda game. Should this be a worry?
This is an insult to Leigh. I know him and often discuss umpiring and how they assess their performance with him. He has umpired many St Kilda games before and I doubt anyone has noticed and I think he is one of the better umpires hence you tend not to notice him. Jayden Hunt believes he is one of the better umpires as well. Leigh recently umpired his 100th AFL game only the 2nd former player to do so and this questioning of his impartiality is wrong.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CHARLIE SPARGO
Well done Charlie congratulations. My son will be spewing as he is a Kangas supporter and rates Charlie highly and cannot belive the Roos didn't pick him. They couldn't get him as a father son as his old man played 81 games with North. Charlie has followed the path of his father, Paul (North Melbourne and Brisbane), grandfather, Bob (Footscray), and great grandfather, Bob snr (Footscray and Melbourne), in making the big-time.

Petracca to miss Essendon Game
What is worse he was bitten by his own dogs. Nasty bugs in dog saliva. Trac carried it into Tuesday night and it may have flared up again. Surgery usually to drain the infection plus antibiotics means a week out. Note also mentioned in injury report rot was not available last week end due to slight abductor strain, that wasn't mentioned earlier in the week.
-
Changes Vs Essendon
Will player management come into play as well and rest players who are sore post Tuesday. Kent definitely out, Jetta has a sore ankle and Bernie is 32. I don’t believe you drop Stretch after 1 high intensity game as he needs another week to adapt to the pace. On form Harmes needs time at Casey and Garlett is on shaky ground. Fritch to come in for sure for Kent the rest is a lottery. I would love to see Spargo get a chance soon. Baltic had a hammie problem and wont be promoted yet. Note Essendon have their own problems with Begley & Green out and Tippinwaty carrying a knee.

Brendan McCartney - Moved to the bench
Just posted in the Goodwin forum the same thing. Things notgood in the box for the first 4 rounds and macca will sit on the boundary line. Mentioned elsewhere that there may have been a clash of egos. When asked to elaborate the reporter stated that Macca wants to be in the boc so I am not sure who he has upset but clearly not a happy camp

Changes v Richmond
So Hunt, Stretch, Balic not named for Casey. Was Balic sore or injured at the end of the game last week. Tyson will be a definite in and Lewis out. I suspect someone to relieve Max other than Harmes, Pedo or Weid. An early training report had jetta and frost in the rehab group but I hope the extra time will see them get up. I think Fritch will be rested and Bugg and Wagner also omitted. In Hunt, Stretch, Tyson and Pedo Out Lewis, Bugg, Wagner & Fritch

Missed Opportunity - ANZAC Eve Crowd
Lots of prepurchased tickets and reserved seats sold so the money is already in the bank. In adition I expect Richmond supporters to come in their droves as well as the theatre goers going to the spectacle. I still expect a big crowd

Backline Setup and Structure
The most damning stat was just posted by Gerard Whately on AFL 360. Under Goodwin and his all out attack game plan in the last 25 games we have allowed the opposition to score a run of unanswered goals (4 or more) in 21 of those games. Any wonder Roos has stated we are the easiest team to score against. Minimum of 4 unanswered goals and in some cases more. How can you possibly have aspirations for finals if you cannot defend. Goodwin and the coaching staff need to address this and back off on the all out attack.

SHUT UP I'M SICK OF THE NEGATIVITY
I think this article in the Age sums up the way some feel and why the negativity https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/after-decades-of-failure-how-can-i-raise-my-kids-to-be-demons-fans-20180416-p4z9ut.html I share his pain

Post Match Discussion - Round 4
We played dumb footy, didn't tackle as well as them, over possessed, panicked and looked slow. Brilliant coaching by Clarkson to move the ball quickly, lower eyes and kick to aa lead or to space where their pace killed us. Breust was BOG and Shiels showed a bit too. They smashed our midfield even though maxxy dominated the hit outs. Our back line is too slow especially against a team like Hawthorn that kick it long to space and allow the small players to run onto the ball. I got sick of the number of goals scored out the back or at the fall of the ball when all our players flew..DUMB.. Sadly Nev is badly out of form, injured or both and has been towelled up. We cannot carry Lewis & Bernie in the same team and Wagner and Hibberd try to fill the same role. We cannot play both as they lack pace. Likewise Melksham, Bugg, Harmes & Kent are all too similar and 2nd stringers. They cannot all be in the team at the same time. I know every team has to work through injuries but Tommy and Viney leave big shoes to fill To those who asked earlier why Hoges didn't go to the middle. He was getting lots of attention for his groin and after half time ran around and went to the bench for treatement before taking his starting place. I suspect this is why he didn't move to the midfield sfter half time. If Hogan is in the middle or marking on the wing there is no one who can take an overhead mark up forward. Contiually we kick it up in the air to a packed back line. Fritch is the only marking target playing in his 4th game. Dumb football in a game wherer we were, out coached out muscled and out played. This loss is one of the worst in the last 2 seasons and left a foul taste in my mouth for the lack of effort.

Post Match Discussion - Round 3
Some random thoughts. The opening 15 minutes we were running 3-4 spares out of the backline, leaving Daw all alone and then we kick it high to a contest. It made him look good and let them get out of our forwrd zone too easy. When the ball came out once it got past our zone they got goals out the back. We played much better with a man on man contest and fixed up the issue North got a lot of goals from frees in what was one of the worst displays of umpiring I have seen this year. The free to Ben Brown for a ruck infringement late in the 2nd left me stunned yet 2 minutes later when Goldy shepherds Max out of the contest no whistle. Fortunately Bugg got take high and promptly missed with his free after the siren We still miss a lot of set shots and Trac is better on the run I like Clarry resting up forward. Jacobs wore him like a second skin and limited his possession but his 2 goals int he last quarter show what a weapon he can be resting up forward. At round 3 we still have a lot of room for improvement espcially our forward efficiency but I expect Tommy Mac will straighten that up on his return. Scott Thompson is a thug. His punch to Jessies head on the final siren is typical of his style for his whole career. I hope it gets reviewed

Coaches Box
These days the coach does all the prep through the week . Rotations are pre planned, match up organised and contingency plans for injuries are all done. So what can the coaching box implement on match day? Instructions to players who don't follow team rules, stem the tide when the opposition gets a run on or come up with a stategy thet wasn't anticipated. I haven't liked Goodies team selection so far but on match day he is limited in what he can do. The good teams are controlled and managed onfield by the generals the leaders. At geelong Selwood barks the orders at hawthorn it was Hodge and look at how he is organising the backline in Brisbane. Sydney have so many leaders it isn't funny and last year Mitchell proved he is a coach in waiting in his stint at the eagles. It took Scott 8 years at geelong to win a flag with a group of exceptional father and son picks. Trac and Clarrie lead our midfield but are not the generals yet. I have no idea how much coaching Jones does and I expect more from Lewis whose undisciplined play has actually hurt us. Maxie is new to leadership and leads by example but not tactically. Yes Goody worries me but I can see ways around his inexperience and where we need to grow.
