1st Half.... Casey was well on top until some severe clangers around the 10 to 20 minute mark of the second, in particular two by Kye Turner (free kick for a blatant push and a horrid kick into the corridor from a marking situation) plus the same corridor horror from Grey resulting in 3 goals to the Lions. That gave them the sniff but they weren't alone. Some other uncharacteristic but very poor turnovers from the likes of Munro & Hibb off HB didn't help during various times from about 10 min into the second. Both players, but more so Hibb, over used the HB or short kick in congestion when a long kick down the line was the percentage option. In addition it made no sense not to utilise the down-the-line option more often with Casey opting (for some reason) to play three lumbering talll rucks in Grundy, KFW & Verral. I can understand playing two. But three in the same side plus Macca & Jeffo up forward really is pushing your luck on the rotations front. Leaving the team very likely to be over-run as the game wore on. Jefferson also got pushed to a wing for a while which is not his usual thing if my memory serves me correct. Even though he didn't do too badly at times, he also lost a fair share of crucial 1 v 1s allowing the Lions an easy transition into 50 while he was there. Add to this Steele playing the other wing on occasions (sharing with Spargo) where he's more often coming off HB. Great endeavour & attack from Roan (as always) but also a bit of a turnover king, adding to the release of pressure on the Lions that was happening across HB. Also Casey often utilises Woe between CBs and the wing at 666, adding some class and often quick smart ball movement into 50 as a winger. This didn't happen in the first half from what i witnessed, mostly utilised at CBs & on ball yes? Did well but not the usual structure we see from Casey. Casey are also missing so many important players (moved on or moved up to senior level) from the 2022 premiership line up. Including Bell who tends to gell really with the likes of moose, Dunstan, Woe and White when fit & in good form. His connection with the Casey regulars as well as his competitive attack at the drop etc just adds to the cooking pot and a large part of why Casey has been so hard to beat for long periods. Verral is reasonable and hopefully will come on with enough time in the system but at this point KFW is a long way off impacting (even at this level) and Grundy just can't get off the ground to compete with any oppo ruck who has a leap and / or a big height advantage. Grundy and Verral also don't mark very often. Bell is also reasonable in this area when he's on which helps Casey to intercept and/or control momentum at times.

Couldn't have said it better. Let's hope we can snag another shortly GNF. Ty for your input to the site over the years. I got a real kick reading your name after the premiership. Peace to you & best wishes

Round 23, 2023 MCG - Demons vs Hawks A decent win given the top 22 team rating was off the season average by a pretty significant 14%. Some credit needs to go to the Hawks here as they pushed us for three quarter playing double the number of rookies (12 vs 6) and with an average game differential of 50 games (each player roughly 2.4 seasons behind on average). As much as it pains me to say it, they appear to be developing and doing pretty well and should be on everyone's radar in 2024 as a rising threat. The Hawks must have forgotten how good Rivers is though as he also topped the ratings charts last time we played them in Rnd 9 with a 5.15 This was also his third time at No.1 with his second a 4.95 against the Cats in Rnd 15. A great bounce back from last year for our young premiership star, coming on leaps and bounds this season. A fabulous result from Lever, McVee and Melk vs their season average rating, with Melk up a massive 68%. Nice to see young Roohey maintaining his good form. Contrast this with the worst result by any player of the season, Kozzy putting in a negative rating of 0.35 The overall numbers summary is as bad as it gets...2 effectives @ 20%, 1 one percenter, 1 mark i50, 2 tackles (1 inside 50), 2 intercepts, 83 meters gained and 5 turnovers. Seems to be having some big swings in form for some reason. Hopefully saving his best for finals! Great result from Nibbler on his 150th with Maxy having a bit of an off day on his milestone vs his usual season standards. Clarry second week blues and/or under a heavy tag? 45% off his lofty season rating. Saw some criticism of Tomo's game and that he was subbed as a result, however the numbers would suggest maybe for another reason as he played 81% game time and outscored his season average rating by a significant 10%. Of course he may not have hit some other factors the coaches are looking at such as defensive 1 v 1 wins etc so the critics may also have been correct. I'm not saying either way as we can't really know the reasoning without some inside intel. Might’ve been better off staying at the bar

Seems to have reverted back to his mark / short dinky kick, stop and prop game of 2022 in the last 3 to 4 weeks. No run or dare at all and some of his kicks are now either turnovers to the oppo or loopy telegraphed ones that end up as hospital jobs where the receiver gets smashed. Getting to the right places and contesting well but with ball in hand the signs aren't great. Possibly Hibbo (post concussion) if he doesn't lift from here?

Viney is our main extractor. The closest we have at Casey would be Dunstan not Harmes. Although i'd probably have the moose as even more Viney like if he was on the list. Not saying it should happen & only Viney & the FD would know the answer. It's certainly worthy of a discussion though if the shoulder is serious enough to warrant an extra week of recovery before finals. An in-form Howes playing somewhere near his best at Casey might get a look in for Salem (even then unlikely as Salem probably has a few more credits up his sleeve) but hasn't returned to play as yet. Woe about the only other plausible option for Salem i'd think but not sure how he went yesterday. Hibb was concussed & unfortunately won't be available for the Swans match.

The filth losing to the horrid Peptides would surely raise a few eyebrows given their 20 goal pantsing on Sat. Ideally we need the Tigers to beat Port and the Sainters to best the Lions this week to secure a first final at the G regardless of our result. Unlikely the Tigers win but they have a VG record on the road and will have nothing to lose. The Pies play first up so they won't know for certain where the others will be placed to know who they're playing at the G. Whereas by the time our game starts we will know all the connotations of what a win or a loss means in terms of first up home final or not. Also IF... Pies lose, Port lose (both unlikely but you never know), we win & the Lions win then we would still end up playing the Pies at the G.
-
Yes bro mentioned at game today. Hope it isn't too serious. Hopefully Papely is out also though so we won't need him this week then the bye the week after should see Hibb available if needed.
-
100% .... don't change this formula unless the oppo go with a 1 tall / mostly small forward set up. Hibbo for that version will be fine

What are they saying at Glenferrie Road
Demon Dynasty replied to DeelightfulPlay's topic in Melbourne Demons
Sat in M56 for a change today vs usual M3 with the DA. Was a fair sprinkling of poo & wee but the ones around me were nothing like the massively arrogant loud bunch of a'holes i remember from the 80s & 90s. In the main they were pretty docile i thought. Another example of not being their formes selves... Was sitting next to a couple (young M & F) who moved away as they didn't like how loud i was barracking plus flying the flag. Mind you that's not the first time that's happened 😄 I reckon even a few Demon supporters were surprised at how loud i was at times. Not saying the sample was an accurate one but the Hawks around me were pretty quiet in general and didn't fire up much. Still my equal most hated alongside the Bombers and Pies Hoping we can put a winning run of 10 plus years on them. -
If Melk had kicked straight / longer he could've easily kicked 5. Defensively pretty solid for him as well aside from the odd switch off. I can't recall him hitting in at so many marking contests in the one match in the past but happy to be corrected. It wasn't just his 'in-game' work either that impressed. At the end of the match i saw him having an extended two way convo with Roohey. Obviously i have no idea what about but can we assume he's passing on some words of wisdom and gems from a forward craft perspective? Invaluable stuff for the young rookie if so and great to see seniors so willing to pass on their knowledge and learnings to the younger boys coming through.
-
Funny you should say that. Managed a pint of Weizen post match at the Burnley Brewhouse Lz. Sensational drop that and extra nice having just beaten the wee & poo again...ceiling the top 4 chance & sending the Blues packing into eliminations! All that while watching Freo go down yet again which cements our high pick. Lovely stuff to round out the weekend.

Would need to watch the replay re his on ball (around ground stoppage work) but from what i witnessed Tracc was better when playing forward (today) vs when being played in the middle at CBs. Thought he was ordinary at CBs. Was hoping to see more Kozzy time here vs Tracc with Tracc playing a bit more time forward. Kozzy needed the time in the middle to get him involved imv as he was pretty quiet offensively as a forward. Defensively very good as usual though. While there were some Kozzy minutes at CBs i thought there wasn't enough of them nor did we persist for long enough imho. Hoping we ramp his time in the middle up to around 15% - 20% of time (at least) as we come into finals. Dangerous prospect through here when he's on and we need an injection of speed too as a change up look.

Was at his very best today. Maysie also solid. At one stage in the third Maysie & Lever were having words about something. They were going back and forth for a fair while. Hopefully just positioning / tactical stuff and nothing more. Tomo was beaten on a few occasions but also won a few contests. A nice nullifying encounter in a 2 v 1 (possibly 3 v 1 if you count the Hawks player roving off for the crumb) at one stage late in the third which probably saved a goal. The oppo do look to move the ball quickly through Tomo's player a fair bit in an attempt to expose his lack of pace / agility as well as trying their best to get him out the back where possible.
-
Yes i understand the reasoning as stated... bewildering as in based on last week's 'form'. Subbed him in the last to give him the opportunity to try and impact me thinks. As in we don't just wNt you as back up for Max, we'd love to see you comtribute up forward too. Show us what you got son!
