  1. I thought this thread had been bumped by someone posting "and Steven May getting into trouble". Which I guess I've just done.
  2. Bad idea. Too much Willie Nelson might encourage him to smoke illegal substances.
  3. I'm more concerned with how Viney plays as captain. I fear that he may over-react to the responsibility to the detriment of his own game. He always strikes me as the sort of player who, in trying to give 100% in everything he does, sometimes goes too far. In other words, he becomes his own worst enemy. On the issue of VC, does it really matter? Gawn remains captain for all the non-on field responsibilities, of which I assume there are plenty. In fact, I've always believed the on-field role of Captain isn't that important compared with the off-field.
  4. If you look at the injury report, I think you'll find WCW is already out with a foot injury.
  5. Am I the only who who read this post and for a fleeting moment thought the poster was suggesting that Bowey or Spargo be Grundy's relief ruckman?
  6. I haven't read this whole thread, so this question may have already been asked and answered, but if May and Petty both play is using Tomlinson as Grundy's relief a viable option? I'm not averse to van Rooyen playing, but we have to recognise that Grundy needs support for up to 6 weeks, not just one. Is it feasible for van Rooyen to be second ruck for 6 weeks?
  7. Hawthorn's strategy is interesting. Mitchell wants to get a young team that grows up together so in about 3-4 years time, they are fully synchronised in the way they play. There is some sense to it and it's essentially what we have done with the drafting of players like Salem, Petracca, Brayshaw, Neal-Bullen, Harmes, etc all in the same few years. The two risks for Hawthorn on field are that they don't draft well or, if they do, they may struggle to keep all their talent together because of the salary cap. The off field risk is a major drop off in revenue from supporters and sponsors. That we have been able to accommodate all our key talent (except, arguably, Jackson) shows what an excellent job is being done by the club from the CEO down.
  8. That's being repetitive.
  9. I suspect Dustin Martin might be similar. I seem to recall he only missed something like 8 games out of his first 200.
  10. I prefer the glass half full analysis. I support people who pay money for reserved seats and don't attend. At least they've paid up. Some may do so knowing full well that they won't be able to attend all or even any matches, but willingly part with the money to the benefit of the club.
  11. Given the quality of match reporting in the 'real' media, I don't think anyone should be surprised at what AI might produce. To summarise with an old expression...garbage in, garbage out.
  12. I thought Oliver was serviceable, but not much more. If I were handing out votes, I would have had both Brown and Lever ahead of Oliver, but still unlikely to get votes ahead of five Brisbane players in that game.
  13. By my possibly dodgy mathematical calculations, by this weekend Oliver will have played 150 out of a possible 160 games since he joined the club. That's a fantastic achievement. And, I'm not having a go at you SWYL, but your opinion certainly wasn't shared by The Age newspaper which included Oliver as the only Demon in their votes for the game. (For those that don't know, The Age gives five player votes for each game, with each being out of 10).
  14. I'm really looking forward to playing Essendon in Melbourne. Oh, wait...that's not happening this year because of the Gather Round. Stupid programming from the AFL.
  15. He's picked as one of the four emergencies from where the sub gets selected. So he's still a chance to be the sub. If May plays and Tomlinson is selected as the sub, be prepared for 4 million posts on Demonland wailing that it's proof that May isn't 100%, shouldn't be playing and everyone from the coaching team to the medicos should be sacked.
  16. That's not Daniher. It's Dustin Fletcher. Easy mistake to make, though. The best way to tell them apart is the hair colour. And that one was actually a very good footballer.
  17. Do we know that as fact or is just an assumption, albeit both a logical and emotional one?
  18. I think it's dreadful. There is nothing unique to Melbourne in it other than the name "Melbourne" and "Demons". Change those and it could be used for any of the other 17 teams.
  19. I've been wondering for a while, but what does the expression "Captain's run" actually mean? Is it (1) the captain takes charge of training with no coaches present? (2) it's just the squad picked for the game including emergencies? (3) it's training like always but a shorter or lighter load? (4) any other option or combination of the above?
  20. Old habits die hard. I assume you mean Hunter.
  21. In the past, a player's history was taken into consideration when penalties were determined. I think that methodology no longer applies, although I think it should - both for repeat offenders and conversely for the genuine good guys who make a one-off mistake.
  22. Why on earth is this game starting at 7.55pm? I realise that it will only be 6.55pm in Brisbane. However, the inconsistency of game starting times does my head in!
  23. It's getting off the topic, but your comment about "pure talent and having plenty of that type of player" is an interesting one. Firstly, the salary cap essentially limits the number of players any club can have with "pure talent". Secondly, one of the criticisms of GWS has been that perhaps it had too many players of "pure talent" and not enough of the other type ("role players", "players prepared to get their hands dirty", or any other euphemism you prefer). In other words, the system requires teams to have a "balanced" list made up of skill and grunt. If you can combine the two in as many players as possible, all the better.
  24. "A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on" said Winston Churchill about this thread. Some extraordinary extrapolation going on here.
