I would like Jimmy Toumpas to be a March to September flyer - go the toump !! -
I don't mind religion but it tends to interfere with my Devil worship, paganism and virgin sacrifices.

I find that nobody noticing your attempt at sarcasm funnier.

I knew you would too although I am surprised - I was expecting you to be Barry Hall'ed ( deservedly) but you got Cale Morton'ed. I think you got off lightly with being awarded "worst post of the day"

Them good ole boys were drinking wisbey and rye, singling this will be the day that I die.

good lord.....

Spot on - but the result nevertheless is the same.

For your argument I will give you the counter argument From Gysberts draft 2009 In the top 10 - Scully, Trengove, Morabito ( injured I know), Rohan, Sheppherd, Butcher, Moore. Bastinac, Fyffe and Lewis Jetta available with later picks Recruiters looking back - "Geez I wish we had reached" Interestingly, the 2010 draft - the informed commentators/journo's/TAC watchers did quite well with this draft - this draft has pretty much panned out correctly but it is one of the few that has. Here's an interesting stat for you From past drafts - from the top 3 Ill start at 2010 as it is not fair to judge later drafts as the kids are yet to really settle 2010 - Sam Day - showing glimpses but hasnt made it yet 2009 - Scully average at best, Trengove injuries and hasn't made it, Martin good last year but patchy previously 2008 - Watts ( insert comment here) NikNat - highlight reel stuff but consistent performer ? Hill - good footballer but consistently great ? 2007 - Kruezer ? Masten ? 2006 - Gibbs was great last year but has underperformed to that point, Gumbleton cruelled by injuries, Hansen - solid 2005 - Dale Thomas - a couple of really good seasons but injuries have plagued his last two years, Ellis - meh 2004 - this ones not too bad - Deledio, Roughy ( love him) and Griffin - I would suggest that Griffin good has been really good but he has been inconsistent and I am not sure that Deledio has been a fabulous no 1 draft pick. If you were also to retrospectively pick your number one pick - not one of the footballers who went pick one would get the nod now. So on 7 drafts what have we learned ? There was no reach in the top 3 and at least one of the three has not been up to scratch. So if the assessment is that McCartin, Petracca and Brayshaw are in most "experts" opinions the top 3 for this draft expect at least one of them to underwhelm maybe even two....

I took up your challenge and I am batting 6 phantom drafts ( including Emma Quayle and Matt Burgan who was with the AFL in 2007) and all had Morton in the top 4 with 3 of the 6 having him going to Richmond ahead of us. So I have checked out Big Footy and DL and to suggest "plenty for and plenty against" is a stretch. That Morton wouldn't go top 4 was definitely a minority opinion and one that I can find supported by a solitary professional commentator being Wisbey

Frawley - beginning of 2014 - handy footballer, best backman at the club, holds up our defence. Frawley - end 2014 - horrible butcherer of the ball with no decision making ability whatsoever and no heart. Seeing the logic now ?

Yet the whole Sylvia comparison is retrospective - you can make an assessment on Sylvia now as we have seen 10 years of him. Sylvia was absolutely driven - at 18..It just didn't last all that long. Sylvia suffered from OP in 2002 but was dominant 2003. Not driven ? 2003 he was a tackling machine ripping games apart. There was no knock on Sylvia at draft time about his work rate or will to succeed. He was described as a competitive beast. "Does all the team things and is hard at the footy - 111 tackles including 13 in a game give you some idea of his work ethic. He is super competitive and even when he is struggling with injury still gives his all" "Has been compared to Michael Voss and should become of the best players in the league within 5 years. Medium, inside forward/midfielder who is a tremendous tackler. Player who leads by example. Great work ethic and very competitive. Had outstanding 2003 season winning All Australian U18 honours, TAC Cup coaches award and Pioneers B & F Award" . I can absolutely see the comparisons between the two in the limited vision I have seen and they way they play. I hope if we take Petracca that he doesn't turn out to be Colin Sylvia. The major difference between now and 2003 is we have a development team in place who will hopefully steer the kids in the right direction both on and off the field. I wonder how Sylvia would have turned out under if we drafted this year under this current regime ? -
I can point to countless articles by junior football watchers who had Morton in the top 4 - have yet to read anywhere that he wasn't rated - but happy to see anything written where he wasn't rated
-
if you look closely at the cover of Sgt Peppers you will see Groucho Marx standing next to Jack Watts. Groucho is holding up a sign with an arrow pointing to Watts and the sign says " its all his fault"

you had me at "I'm simply confused.."

I'll be happy when in the near future we say "geez - wasn't he a good draft pick" ( like I am saying about Tyson). Until that time I won't get excited by any name called out. -

Thats why we are experts- I was completely underwhelmed by his kicking - that's because I saw a different video package. If you watch the package early on in this thread you will be unimpressed. -
I agree - it is not entirely one or the other. We have certainly made some drafting errors - but to have so many junior footballers who were talented according to the spotters both from our club and other clubs/media and have so few go on to be successful makes you question our development. The questions you posed as possible reasons are the answers IMO. Youngsters at better clubs are made to wait their turn, have less expectation placed on them and are blessed to have good senior players around them. I use Gunston as an example. Granted, he was showing good signs when the Hawks recruited him but he was clearly the third choice forward behind Roughy and Buddy - to let him have the third best tall defender on him and having other teams worry about Buddy and roughy cannot be under estimated - yet we are still a little caught in mire and can't wait to see how Hogan tears it up next - the same Hogan who is yet to play a senior game. ( even though Roos does hose down draftee expectation). Your other point about how poor we have been. It is self fulfulling - Gunston leads out and his leads are honoured and he is hit lace out on the chest by the likes of mitchell and co. We few entries into the forward line and ordinary disposers of the ball - miss the target and the result is two fold - the mids dont pull the trigger often enough for fear of missing the target and the target does lead often enough because the leads are rarely honoured.
-
nonsense - every one of these kids is either a jet/gun or a spud and fair dinkum if don't draft ....(insert gun's name here) it will be the biggest mistake we have ever made.
-
No the most important is developing any ounce of talent they have. I know this will open the debate again but it is no coincidence that nearly every single draft pickwe have had has either bombed or reached the lofty heights of "average". Further to this, it is no surprise that Roos has gone all out to get a top notch development team into our club. These top ten kids all have talent - it is maximising it that is key. We have been deplorable at this.

I watched again - from this vision provided his kicking is far from a highlight. Have a look at the Brayshaw footage and compare. (big disclaimer - I am only judging on the footage provided - I have not seen any of these kids in the flesh) -
Christmas card is on the way ......

Was that a Freudian slip ? We certainly exorcised Neelds rights as senior coach.
-
I think you may have jumped the gun - the comment made was that he is a club great. As a forward in the AFL does his career sit beside Ablett or Carey? Not in my mind. Is he a club great ? Undoubtedly (IMO)
