Umm..... what??????????????????
-
Imagine if he just gets through a pre-season, could be anything (note - extreme levels of sarcasm in that comment) We need Col and still not sure why so many people would be fine to let him go. He received no cheap possessions this year and was forced to go in again and again to get his own pill. We weren't skilled enough to link up enough and was still good enough to get the pill 20 times a game. If he went to a team with any type of skill or assistance in the engine room he would have received another 3-5 touches and all of a sudden people see him as a player. He is often the first one tagged as well ahead of Jones. For those who think he wasn't having a crack this year you are blind. I did see him walk around a few times with his head down looking disinterested but when your down by 10 goals half way into the second I would be wondering what the point is as well. I'd much rather keep Col then continue this ridiculous path of taking a punt on youth as that's worked out really well for us in the past.

Did anyone see the late night doco of the 89 GF last week? Forgot what night it was on, had camera footage of the hawks boys strutting around the Northern Stand nude footage of Dermie's bare backside. It's amazing how things have changed removing the old "boys will be boys" attitude.

I never called for him to be traded or delisted, I just wondered how he would get a game in our midfield ahead of Moloney, Scully, Gysberts and Morton. Especially when we would possibly be having Petterd and Bate rotate through there as well.

Guilty of the above, although I said Cale will be our Goddard. It was hard not to get sucked in, got some big possession games early between some ordinary games. At that time, being the eternal optimists we were it was hard not getting excited blaming the poor games on lack of experience. For those who are interested, he was pretty consistent getting the pill this year with most games getting 20-25 touches for Werribee. Was only in the best 3 times however which is very disappointing for someone who I thought would have been one of the most desperate to prove people wrong. Playing midfield coach?

Must get a legit crumbing forward this free agency period
deeko replied to What's topic in Melbourne Demons
This Also, small forwards are really the icing on the cake players and we have no cake. As for what we have: - We still have Byrnes. Not great I know but happy for him to continue until someone better forces him out. - Kent will continue improving next year with more delivery and fitness. - Sylvia (if he stays and we recruit more mids) can go back to his role as the small marking forward like LeCras where he plays his best footy. They aren't great but they will do for now. If we are so big on this idea then please rule out the one dimensionals as someone previously said. Go the Stokes, Wingards, Zaharakis' type players. They can play both roles and well. -
Absolutely love this

Have met Dusty a couple times, a very different unit but he is not the monster that some on here make him out to be. Although he was good mates with Connors, there is a large difference. Connors was a loud, obnoxious tool at times where Dusty would just sit around quietly. Not saying he is an angel but he is not a massive trouble maker like some here seem to beleive. Yes he is loose but he is a super player with an amazing leg on him and is only going to get better over the next three years. I can't understand why people don't want him for the role model/image side of things but anyone who can get 25 touches and kick a sausage a game is ok by me. Welcome Dusty, look forward to a few sharpies on a Sunday with you at the Geebung as long as we notch up a W over the weekend.

I really hope this isn't the case. Not sure what he adds that we need. If it is for a big body Jamar is still around and can compete well enough. If it's for leadership there are surely others as Jolly comes across as a fair whinger and the fact the pies let him go to rely on two relatively unknowns and an undersized overaged Hudson says a lot about there opinions of him. If he had some qualities then surely he would be retained over Hudson. He had his chance with the Dees.

High draft pick which matters little now. But averaged just less than 20 touches over the last two seasons. In the right age bracket. Will continue improving and may get the chance to flourish in our midfield with more opportunities in comparison to the tiges. And lets face it, we have to pay someone so it's a good chance to get him across

I think he was recruited to be a mid and he will play his best footy as a mid. I'd love to know the effect of being 21 +/- and captaining one of the worst teams ever would have on Jack, surely it would weigh him down. I am sure he has fantastic leadership skills but it would be great to see him relieved of this and just go back to concentrating on playing footy. He may have groin issues like most think but I think his problem may be between his ears at the moment and just isn't confident. He got better at the end of the year, pretty sure he got over 20 touches in each of the last 3 or 4 and I am sure he will be a great player in years to come.

I want mids, with some mids and then followed by some mids. Sick of hearing about 'once in a generation key position players.' I'd rather not punt on these players and just wait and make sure they become decent players before chasing them as they always become available. We did it well with Clark and Dawes (ignoring the injuries). West Coast did it with JJK, Sydney with Tippett are examples also of how this can be done. At least giving them a few years makes sure we haven't wasted draft picks like we did with Cook and a lesser degree Watts. I'd say there is less chance of error when picking up the best mid in the draft in comparison to the best KPF so let's not take more chances. If we did get him anyway, I wouldn't mind to see Jesse at CHB as his aggressiveness at the pill and great contested marking would see him become the general and I think Chip would like the company of another big rig down there.

Colin Sylvia is yet to decide if he will remain at Melbourne
deeko replied to Romey's topic in Melbourne Demons
For some unknown reason, I really like Col and want him to stay. He is clearly one of those 'cream on top' kind of players where in a good team he would be receiving a lot more of the uncontested pill and jagging a couple more goals. This year he was forced to go in and get it and I thought he was ok at this. He is not a full time midfielder, he is still best on a forward flank and occasionally having a run through the guts. He is not a born leader and never will be. Let's not try make him one like we did to Brad Green. He is not a 30+ possession winner and never will be. He is however a player who opposition coaches look to shut down first each week as they know how dangerous he can be and is in the best 5 players of our club and we need to retain all the quality we can. Must keep -
Surely the Eagles would do everything they can to retain Shuey. They need mids just like us. Even if we got pick one and offered it up for a package including Shuey, what would they do with Boyd? He would be in there amongst Kennedy, Darling and a resting Cox/Nicnat. They are similar to us in needing more and more mids
-
I just adore Jonesy but I don't think he is the second best clearance mid from the centre in the AFL. May have gotten the second most but thats only as there are zero other midfielders to swap with him so he competes in there more than probaby any other midfielder. He will be even better when he has some support around him so he can get a few cheapie possessions each week instead of relying on getting his own pill 24/7

A slightly random query but not worth starting a thread over, does anyone know if his son can play?

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - DANIEL CROSS
deeko replied to MadAsHell's topic in Melbourne Demons
RPFC you wrote in the other thread that you are hoping for 'Band 3' (forgive me if the wording is wrong here) compensation if we lose Sylvia which could be in the lines of a pick in the 20's. Wouldn't picking up Cross effect this and see a similar effect to last year where in my opinion I feel we got a little shafted (picking up Byrnes & Gillies for Beamer & Riv)?? -
To be honest RM, I was only having a cheeky dig, nothing serious. I do worry about your list however; one who doesn't know if he wants to stay or go, one who averages 7.5 touches a game this year (just checked that on footywire, wow thats minimal), one who wasn't getting a game (injuries didn't help) and the last who is retiring at the end of the season. I actually think raw pace is slightly over-rated in our game anyway, obviously its an advantage but when the ball is kicked its clearly moving quicker than those chasing it. It's really that ability to get the ball at full speed and think quick. I have never had the priviledge of watching Dayle play but he sounds like a great prospect, if he wants it. If he has the skills which people continue discussing, hard at the pill and some hunger than I am all for him
-
Him having both pace and foot skills means he would not fit in at all with us RM!!! Application and effort however is another story

I don't hate him at all and I will cheer for him everytime he runs out in the red and blue don't get me wrong. It's just that the positives that people speak of here I struggle to see in Dunny. He is not damaging enough to play loose across half back and he isn't a solid enough defender in my eyes to take a key player. He doesn't play as that big man floating across taking intercept marks/spoils like how Tom Harley used to play or does he play a lock down role. Maybe my problem with Lynden is I have no idea his role in the team and really struggle to see what value he adds. In my own analysis of players of who we should retain / move on, 'adding value' is all I look at. If he is moved on I would not worry at all, I'm tired of him playing some 'reasonable' games at the junk end of the year getting people excited. If he is retained though I will continue cheering him every game and hoping for the best from him. Oh and on Jimmy, being an Echuca boy and watching Olly play all his junior footy, I would still have Jimmy every day of the week. He's going to be a ripper!!
-
Throw in a Scotty Thompson along with some outside run from someone like, I dunno, a Scully and things could have been quite different!
-
Come on Old Dee, lets roll the dice on this one. Hoping we keep Davey on in some for of ambassador role with the club and maybe he could take young Dayle under his wing. We are lacking in the excitment factor big time and I want a reason to go to the footy again.
-
He is playing in the pocket/flank on someone half his size. He should have no contested marks against him at all seeing Chip, Tommy Mc and Garland take the big boys before him. I can't have Lynden at all. He is not big enough for a key position and not agile enough for a small. As per usual he starts the year off as ordinary and then plays a couple games that I would consider as 'par' towards the end and people wish to keep him. He adds absolutely zero value to our team other than the occasional comical moment. Has been tried in every spot on the ground and has never been close to cementing one. Please move him on.
