Novel thought - how about fines only for those fringe players on base payment - all other offences get a suspension as $100 or $1500 clearly means nothing to the likes of Greene, Dangerfield, Selwood, Hawkins, Mumford. A "clear message" would have started at 6, plus a "good behaviour bond" of a further 3 if he ever spoke to or gestured in an intimidatory way to an umpire over the remainder of his career. That, plus as an aside, clear notice that persistent arguing or haranguing (which would include removing the mouthguard as per Mitch Robinson) an umpire results in a free kick, plus 50 regardless of the player or the match.

What takes place in the stands, and on line is totally different to even verbal abuse by players on the field, let alone aggressive contact, which is what occurred. FCS if the AFL are serious about 'defending umpires' and 'the integrity of the game' then they must stop any contact with umpires (other than the truly accidental in play) AND also start penalising on field abuse and even questioning - start with an automatic free kick, and add an immediate 50 meters each time it continues. It would stop almost instantly.

Without waning to get ahead of ourselves, we were desperately unlucky that our 2 GF appearances were against possibly the two most dominant teams of their era playing hard brutal take no prisoner footy. Both 1988 and 2000 we fell into the finals without ever being considered by most people a decent chance. 2021 is very different.
