  1. In yesterday's pre-game on SEN, Chris Connolly said Stefan martin was the smartest person wearing an AFL jumper at the minute, and included coaches in that.

Is he also rocket scientist as well as our new gun on-baller/forward?

    Does anyone know?

Connolly said he took some time to understand what was needed to succeed at AFL level, as opporsed to his other life interests.

  2. Can't see NicNat doing that anytime soon. The most satisfying thing for me is the fact that Watts has obviously eclipsed Natanui in development right now, and is clearly going to be a great player. Stick that up ya arses media critics!!!

I am expecting a big pump up of Jack on Footy Classifieds tonight by G. Lyon. - maybe with a little bit of early days yet but maybe its all working out after all.

  3. It was a statement thats for sure, he was everywhere today and was B.O.G. pretty much, will give him a ton of confidence that's for sure.

Although not playing the true position, i liked the way he semed to be in everything and imposed himself into contests clsoe-in, feeding out the ball, but importamntly continued contesting all day and all over the ground.

I would now say we NEED him and would be dissappointed if he was forced out say through injury.

  4. With Vardy now looking the goods at the Catters and Tomahawk apparently on the outer I think we should be looking to trade for him, big body forward and has talent!!! Thoughts??

    You ARE joking???

  5. This game is not big, it's huge.

i still remember Round 22 1998....i think that's when Richmond started this modern dislike for the MFC

That's because a Melbourne player, and I think it was Stinga - but not certain- , siad that the Richmond team were arguing amongst themselves and he called them the Richmond netball Club. Farmer took mark of the year from memory. Won by 12 goals.

  6. I hope that comment wasn't aimed at me as all I was trying to point out was that this thread needs to at least try to stay on topic.

    Well said Queen C.

IMO we have been largely leaderless since the Viney days (Except Junior that is). I don't susccribe that Neita was a great leader - great warrior isn't the same thing. The evidence is the whole flakiness on field we experienced in the Daniher years and this legacy still lives on.

We are only now fixing the list management debacle from those years as well.

Our next generation will fix this given how well we have drafted in the leadership stakes - Trengove, Grimes, Moloney, Frawley.

This is what needs to be fixed now or for 2012 - along with plans, and team development etc

  7. A persuasive case for scully going/ stay can be made either way. scully going imo is the new normal, we are catching with best practise in the U.K and other footballing nations with players rushing to the cash and the champagne.

very true but for players going to GWS - welcome to the world of irrelevance. As anyone who knows anything about Sydney culture in general and in sport, AFL does not register in the media up there. Scully and others will spend 10 years in the wilderness in the outback suburbs. You need to live out in the west because of the diabolical traffic, etc.

Anyone who goes there deserves all the money they can get. Remember, Sheedy is in this for himself and don't enyone think otherwise.

Lets all move on. We still have a nucleues oof a great future in Trengove, Tapscott, Gysberts, Frawley etc, led next year by moloney.

The gamne plan - that's another question.

  8. I used the AFL ladder Predictor.....and we will finish... 5th

The ladder predictor assumes things SHOUL happen like Tiges beating Port in Darwin, Freo beating Saints in Perth etc.

Use any system OTHER than the ladder predictor - great fun though to dream with.

  9. There were good signs of Urgency, not sen before from Morton, why not?

I feel Morton will never 'look' urgent , he just donen't have that demeanour on field, and we shouldn't demand it from him. He seemed to be everywhere on Friday, and a channel in the last quarter in a number of link plays, winning one-on-ones and backing back for the contest.

I think he has it, and consistency will show eventually.

  10. It's not laughable. It made perfect sense to drop him from it, and if you asked him he'd more than likely agree...

    It's irrelevant.

I was refering to the whole concept of contrived leadership groups being 'luaghable'. They exist or they don't and membership is not a function of a group vote - its a natuarl thing - ask Kevin Rudd!

Beamer is in it and will be for the foreseeable future IMO

  11. The 1/2 time vison on TV showed Brent Moloney revving up the team, purposeful and intense - sort of " the game's not over boys" type of approach.

Has someone forgotten to tell him he's not in the group? This situation is laughable - he IS the leadership group - with some great backup by example from Trengove, Sylvia, Tapscott etc.

  12. They did mention they adding additional channels to be able to run the required matches live.

I'm just glad I don't have to watch channel 7 for footy anymore from 2012.......they suck in my book!

Is it only me, or are others sad if Huddo doesn't get a gig on 7 or Foxtel. If he goes to Foxtel I'll sign up with them. He's the best caller by far IMO

  13. You won't get yelled at by me, as you are another person reinforcing exactly what I was saying. I hadn't actually heard about Collingw@*ds no comment re the RSL, but that just adds more to what I was hoping people would get from this discussion. And yes, my grandfather is appalled by this state of affairs. And so are a couple of his mates he served at New Guinea with.

It was a really well written and interesting article BTW.

Good Job to get it up on the AFL site

  14. I didn't find much food for thought in the article, and some of the comments here are hard to understand and even harder to stomach.

No, ANZAC Day is being exploited by the AFL and the MSM to make this match a contrived 'blockbuster' spectacle, complete with all the language and imagery of bravery and sacrifice. Take ANZAC out of the match and it's just a cash cow, another fixed part of the 'fixture', and it's time the cow was shared around or its profits shared around.

I feel compelled to support LH in this.

The concept of an 'Anzac' medal is ridiculous, added to the contrived linkages by pseudo-historical comments we hear from M. Malthouse each year(I don't know which history he is reading) combined with the lack of opportunity to players of other clubs all adds up to a general unfairness embedded in the whole process.

Collingwood were formally asked recently for the amount of funds from this 'event' channelled into the RSL - no comment was the reply.

Before I get yelled at, my Grandfather survived gallipoli and France and my father survived the Pacific. They would be appalled at this state of affairs.

  15. which is exactly why Dean Bailey may be a better Assistant Coach going forward. People are suited to different jobs.

Moloney was publicly shamed..i think that was even tougher than a suspension.

And in the very next game , IMO, he carried the team. The sign of a class act I reckon.

Good decisons all round. Don't compare this incident to others - I don't remember him belting anyone.

  16. Except harder, smarter, a better defender, a better reader of the play and a better leader. But apart from that, he is exactly like Bruce

I disagree on at least 3 of the 5 charatceristics you nominate. You figure it out.

Accepting mediocre skills on any player will just keep on costing us when it counts.

  17. Well how does everyone rate our team at the moment?

So far I would say its unimpressive, with lots of room for improvement.

Malthouse said last week we are playing as if its April - in other words its a long season, a young team and they will gell togther - as they did late in the season last year.

We can't be racing out of the blocks at this time, nor should we , if we want to be there at the end. That said, after today we will be 2 wins and a draw going into the bye. I'd take that any time.

  18. Herald Sun

I wonder what the rumblings are he talks of, and who they are?

Yet another example of the media industry, composed of hacks and ghost writers attemtping to justify their existence.

1400 accredited journo-types with the AFL produces crap like this everyday.

Crawford was great player - let's leave it there.

  19. We can beat the Dees, says Ablett

PUTTING together four good quarters of football is all that stands between the Gold Coast Suns and its first win in the AFL this Sunday.

That is the mindset of Gold Coast Suns skipper Gary Ablett heading into this weekend's fixture against the Melbourne at the Gabba.

Ablett is a confident of a win against the Demons but that came with a disclaimer.

As they say in the classics

"he would say that, wouldn't he"

My son reckons Jurrah might be good for 10 this week!

  20. I liked the promise he showed early in his career. Then came the injuries, then last years pre-season I watched him drop marks and look completely unco and pretty much put a line through him.

He's been the big improver so far, very happy with his agility and he puts in an honest contest to relieve Jamar.

Seems to be someone come from nowhere each year.

After what Jamar has done, it gives me hope than anyone can suddenly click and get moving. Stef is on his way, I wonder if Newton can do the same?

Great point about his agility. he actually bends down for the ball and can play many positions. A great improver. I used to be mortified when Jamar came off - not so worried now, and allows Jamar to take the odd speckie down forward.(If only he could kick a bit straighter)

  21. I have to say I have some sympathy with this view. These FM radio stations get away with murder these days with their encouragement of muck raking and gossip mongering.

Chuck enough mud and some is bound to stick. Moloney will now be referred to as "that bloke that peed on the bar" by any number of ignoramuses who couldn't focus their short attention spans on the truth of the story as it unfolded.

There's a whiff of character assassination about it in my opinion and tossbags like Eddie McGuire and his station head mates are directly to blame, you are right.

The winner here is the MFC. Handled with class, including Beamers press conf comments and will now move on, a lesson learned and continuation of solid standards at the club.

Has anyone considered poor Eddie. Now at a low rating FM station, predictable show, up at 4.00am while most of us are tucked up in bed and wondering everyone moring ..."How did I end up here?"....
