  1. Very frustrated very very frustrated, so many what ifs, and now I'm cheering for Collingwood of all things. Do you reckon Collingwood would rather meet us in a QF a GF or a Prelim? Or no difference? Personally I'm happy with the win anywhere mentality and would trade final four ladder position for a settled forward line.

Given our loss of Petty and the struggle to find a consistent CHF, I believe we should  centre on Petracca to play the role. He marks above his height, his power running, and given the role of running from the centre to the half forward line with his endurance, would run most Centre Half Backs off their feet.

I wonder, he is as strong as any CHB going around, while he might not be able to out mark everyone he would at least halve contests and bring ball to ground. Leave some space for Oliver in the middle. Am not totally against it.

Who would you play as FF? Smith? I almost would prefer this set up as we would have great fwd half defensive pressure. He would be in the head of every defender, he has a reputation and draws defenders like flys.

Mad time to try it 2 weeks before finals though.

  3. The current campaign deserves it's own thread.

And I'm leading off with Mackenzie Arnold, who is the Australian equivalent of Stephen Curry for ice water in the veins. I still can't get my mind around the pressure of keeping a penalty decider in Australia's biggest match to date, missing a penalty to win Australia's biggest match and then going back to keeping and saving against the same player twice. Absolutely legendary performance. This is not just me being caught up in the emotion of the game either but I actually find the Women's game more fun to watch, there is less cheating, that usually drives me insane, and as per @Nascent makes me half hearted about football. Where as I've really enjoyed these WC games.

Also this is where I see the AFLW going in terms of skill and fitness, these women were running over 30km/h which is not shabby at all. AFLW will get better too.

Flag seen flying in Somalia 😉, picture forward to Head of UN here (who is French 😜

Well, we've played a lot worse this season and lost (Bombers, Lions early in the season, Freo etc) but tonight we looked up for the contest but the opposition stifled our game plan

Important aspects like cohesiveness, a connection going forward and directness were real issues tonight and the reasons why we lost

I get it, when you get close to a win we often can point at one thing or another but I will ask you this question ...

Compared to our best, how would you rate our performance tonight?

That's a fair question, against our best, I'd have to agree overall 6.5. but that's everything. I thought it was skills that let us down not effort, and I hate it more when we don't have effort. For me the worst game this season was the Bombers loss, because I thought effort was poor. That said, we've only been beaten when teams are playing their very best.

We went wide all night ... where was the corridor football? Non existent

We obviously view the game differently.  To me there are never any excuses

    Play better and you win

6.5 out of 10 instead of 8.5 out of 10 was how I see our performance tonight

You want to call that an 8?  You're dreaming

Carlton outplayed us ... take your hat off to the winner and lose with grace

yeah Carlton won, haven't disputed that, not making an excuse but is fair to say they won by a margin so narrow I am not cutting my wrist, personally I think since 2018 we have swapped some manic pressure for touch, and have lost a fraction of our ability to play wet weather football. I thought we were in trouble with the conditions, if that was a dry game I reckon it might have gone a little differently. I look at reasons whey we lost, not the same as excuses, but I didn't see a team that was overwhelmed with pressure, I saw some execution that was off by players who normally do better. And for the record, I think Grundy in the wet was a mistake, after initially being happy for him to be in the side.

For us, we can play a high pressure game on a reasonably consistent basis but tonight, we couldn't deal with their pressure

Demur, we couldn't execute goal kicking, slightly different, I thought our pressure and composure during some dodgy tactics and non calls was very high.

  7. Carlton can carry on all they like, they played hard and worked their butt's off, and won by the width of a Bee's phallus, truth is they were lucky and we didn't have an even performance. We were so close, it hurts, has ruined my week etc, but when I watch the contested effort to get back from 3 goals down in the fourth I am amazed by how hard the players were. Brayshaw, Rivers, Viney, were stone cold killers at the contest and were the reason why we had a chance to win, just the execution was off with goal kicking. But that contested game will win 9/10 games of football. We are winning the flag with that pressure and two more games to get fwd 50 right.

I was talking to a footy dude who barracked for Essendon and I said they have once again been a dissapointment. He disagreed and said Scott has 10 wins which is good for their list which is poor.

Anyway long to short we both thought it would be interesting who rises first, Hawthorn or Essendon. Long time rivals and completely different list management strategies.

I secretly hoped we could see both clubs in a Carlton v Melbourne "Kreuzer Cup" style scenario. That'd be a good year.

My money is on the Hawks, they were ridiculously good against the pies. I don’t like Mitchell at all but reckon he’s a hell of a coach.

  9. Both sides have scored 2+ goals from bad decisions. Was really hoping Maynard would get done for dissent, Field umpire knew they'd stuffed it up. Fair play to Collingwood though, injuries and they didn't drop their heads, got to work.

  10. If I get the OP right, you must dislike the player (not just the club), so while I would love a Curnow, I don't hate him. I used to dislike/almost hate Toby (and think alot of his rehabilitation is for media consumption only) so like others Toby. But of the other players I hate, none that I think would make us better going forward, Tex having this season at the Demons would have been good, but can't see that happening in 2024. Hawkins is done, would have fitted the bill a few years ago. Rance would have been a big winner when he was travelling well, loathed the guy, favorite moment was Viney putting him on his ar$e and Dawes' elbow.

  11. Happy with the team, coaches have shown selection nous all year, if they are trying Grundy, it's not out of bloody mindedness. I really feel for Grundy the media drivel around him has been verging on vicious, totally undeserved.

The bruisefree jibe about us always annoyed me, I felt like we've always made Carlton pay for it ever since. I can see either a close win or a blow out, have fond memories of 2018 seeing Lever play and torching the Blues by a 100 points, feeling in my bones like we are going to be on pressure style like the KB game, hopefully with better kicking for goal. Watch all the mouth breathing journos jump on the band wagon if we win, and the stories will switch to something unfair favoring Melbourne.

I really hope they play the game on the big screen for no other reason than it feels like a Cathy Freeman moment, will be watching here In Somalia. (Allthough I was policing Carlton the night Italy cheated against Australia in a World Cup game, and got rivers of abuse about Australia losing from the Carlton crowd, who were very Pro Italy, not sure how much they love the Matildas).

I mean this in a jocular way and not too seriously, but did you ever consider by drafting Grundy we don't have to play against him? So while we might not be getting full advantage of his skills because he replicates what Max brings, He has more than held his own over the years against Max. But imagine Grundy at Port or Brisbane (i reckon he's better than Oscar), for one of the sides we are competing against. Would go a way towards nullifying one of our weapons. This might have been said elsewhere but haven't read everything. He is an expensive insurance policy but I see it working in more than one way

Lastly +1, love the idea of the Melbourne Football club having a soccer team, I see synergies, always thought with our name we could be a much larger sporting organization (Aussie Rules always has primacy though).

  12. I cruised the BF Blues board, annoyingly reasonable compared to most clubs, interesting discussion about balancing mid field speed with grunt, and acknowledgment that we have a fair list.

We are their biggest bogey side btw 8 wins in a row.

Also for those who are not filled in on Herbatron, I'll just leave this here, guy makes a really solid effort, (incl a clip of ANB sidestepping two Essendon players who collide (-;) I reckon he should make some clips for the front bar show, would suit perfectly .

  13. I think Danger is a classic case of tall poppy syndrome, he's not as nearly as FIGJAM as some make him out to be. That said, while I have no love for Geelong at all, but mad (used to be jealous) respect for the fact that the club is a unified well run operation, from recruitment to coaching and their board. I am with FDRoosevelt/(and James Bond) “I ask you to judge me by the enemies I have made.” Anyway, as much as I have respect for Paddy and Geelong, they are the enemy, he can't go and pretend to be Switzerland, while he is still wearing colours. I do think the commission should have very recent ex players on it though.

Yes, it is. It will be a shared banner for them. It’s been done before and we still have it looking amazing.

By the by, I’ve been counting the rounds down to Nibbler’s 150 for a while now. Two reasons: first, I love Nibs and I’m stoked for him that he’s reached this milestone, and secondly because I’m imagining all the Nibbler-bashers boo-hooing coz he’s still getting a game every week. Every single week. 🥳🤩🤗

100% I think there should be a round of Mea Culpas as tribute, you guys know who you are, I'll even take you off ignore to read them.

How culinary standards have plummeted in the  Princess Park environs.

Lygon Street was once a mecca for good Italian tucker. And all that appears to be on offer now is noodles and mass produced domino's lasagna. Which has probably been sitting in the bain-marie all afternoon after the Rathdowne Towers pension day rush.

Bon vivants like Christian would prepare something at home for the family. Or pop out to Bellota Wine Bar for a late lunch or Centonove for dinner.

    The menu choices may be something like this;

    Starter: Antipasti Piedmont

Main: Salissiccia di carne stallone piccante con verdure di stagione. Aggiungere la salsa petracca. *

Dessert: Panna cotta con i berrries

Wine: Begin with Mamete Prevostini, Valtellina Superiore Riserva follow with Moscato d'Asti.

    * Steer clear of the linguine con frutti di mare.

Podere Grattamacco Bolgheri Superior thanks very much...

Insalata Caprese and a Bresaloa for antipasti (Pane Fichi Noci e Uvetta from Roscioli)

    Rest of the menu:

Petracca to play football thank you 😉
