I think that is a forlorn hope sue. IMO it will only get worse over time. Having said that I don't disagree with the reasons for having a GWs I just thing it could have been done a lot better. Paying $6million to an average player and a similar amount to a rugby player who had little idea was folly from the start.

I Agree but in spite of my best efforts to understand the upgrading process Redleg the MFC never ceases to catch me out. e.g. last year they upgraded Magner and then never played him. So I will believe it when it happens

Interesting How much do Rookies get paid? I assume he is now a full time footballer, if the pay is as low as I think you would wonder why someone would take time out from being an engineer to be a rookie at the second worst club in the competition. I suspect he has given himself a year or two to make it and then he will not wonder "if only" when he is older. Sadly the AFL needs GWS to be more successful than Footscray, North or the MFC. In the medium term we are expendable a successful GWS is vital.

Once the pollies get involved anything can happen hardtack. I know someone reasonable close to the Federal political scene they suggest that what the Feds don't want is notices issued that are challengeable in court. They don't want to have to allocate more money to ASADA, in fact they would like to cut back. My understanding is that as far as possible they only want infraction notices issued that are as iron clad as possible. I will be surprised if the notices go ahead. But hell I have been told things in the past that turn out to have been kite flying.

There is one difference YD that I can see. A number that were learning so much are now so clever they are now somewhere else. That has got to be a good result for education.
