I was thinking earlier that just as there is the perfect murder, from 2006 onwards, it has been the perfect destruction of a football club. Every move, perfectly executed. From here, keep buying your membership(s) and turn up to games if you are willing to accept the team won't win, and you'll be lucky to get a quarter's worth of competitive effort.

It pains me to say, I agree.

I thought this post on Bigfooty summed up the situation quite well: I've read through most of the thread but I realise that only Melbourne supporters, who watch Melbourne games and who follow the club, week in week out, are in the best position to judge on this. It pains me to admit that I have never seen a AFL coach so clearly out of their depth. I vaguely recall Buckenara being sacked in his second season at Sydney when they were terrible in the early 90's. Peter Rhode was another that didn't last long. Damien Drum had a bad run. But I can't recall any of those sides being playing the the shameful dispirited malaise that is being dished by Melbourne under Neeld. Let me say straight of the bat. I consider our list to be the worst in the league (worse than GWS in terms of future potential). So clearly there are issues other than Neeld. But there is always going to be bad teams in the league, but you could at least expect them on occasion to be competitive. The hallmark of us under Neeld tenure has been a shocking lack of competitiveness usually combined with a galling lack of effort. I really for the guy. His coaching career is ruined. He'll likely go down as one of the worst coaches ever. The powers that be who hired him almost on a whim (looking squarely at you Gary Lyon) have made a catastrophic mistake for which there may be no way out. I really hope he has success in footy eslewhere when he departs. Won't get a senior AFL coaching gig again but hopefully there'll be other opportunities. But all sentiments aside, these are all the reasons he must go. - He has completely disenfranchised the playing group. This started with removing senior players Rivers and Moloney from the playing group and replacing them with two kids, who very clearly are not up the task. He comes in to the club with zero tolerance, scorched earth approach. The kind of militant ideology of the Tommy Hafey ilk. Whilst I appreciate what we wanted to achieve with this...It was quite arrogant, disrespectful and very naive. Without any real knowledge of the playing group calls them soft and lazy " I walked in to a nightmare" - verbatim. I wonder what he'd say if he walked in the club now? In 2011 we were in finals contention for most of it (and there were some very glaring deficiencies of that side too) - but compared to now it feels like a freaking golden era. Obviously thinks all that is required is a strict disciplinarian. He strikes me as completely old-school and unable to communicate, especially with the younger players. Almost all of the younger players have gone backwards under him. Whilst I don't rate our talent, obviously to be drafted into the AFL they must of shown something at some point. Some of the players running around I could barely see playing regular VFL. Watts, Trengove etc - people forget - were developing well a couple of years ago. They're both now completely devoid of confidence, that seems a lot to do with playing under Neeld. I think everyone recognises his off-season recruiting was diabolical. Whilst I do understand where he was coming from, getting more senior experienced players to club, the execution was woeful. Picked up players who were at the end of their careers and unlikely to get a game anywhere else. Picks up Dawes who I have never rated and has been carried by a great Collingwood team his whole career. These recruits looked a huge mistake to anyone from the outside looking in. The is no resemblance of a game plan. He seems now to have dropped his hard-nosed attitude and now just looks completely lost. He has no idea how to turn it around. Every press conference is making me cringe as it just reveals more and more how lost he is. Refuses to shoulder any of the blame. He's desperate and his excuses are become more and more so. I, and many others I see here, am honestly worried for his mental health. That is a ridiculous state of affairs because the club is my priority and I should be absolutely hating him for what he's reduced it to. But I just feel sorry for him, feel sorry for the players. This mess pre-dates all of them. But FFS at some point we have to forget the past, move on and someone take some f***ing responsibilty! I hate that we have to being in a gap-time coach so early in the season. But we cant go on like this. It's destroying the club. I've never seen it in a worse state. This is just an absolute tragedy. I don't have any answers. And neither does Mark Neeld.

Roos ain't coming WYL. We need to look elsewhere.

Neeld supporters have been strangely absent the past 24 hours (other than the odd "like" of a post). Would be good to see some front up to either stand by their views and their belittling of other posters who have questioned the current FD, or admit they were wrong. One or the other. To just not show up is pretty [censored] weak in my view.

How did Cameron Schwab fill in his days at the MFC?
P-man replied to angrydee's topic in Melbourne Demons
If Jackson decided to ditch the blazers, the bugler, the collar, and the seven design concepts in one logo, that alone would make him my hero. All of them represent an era I want to forget, and alcohol alone isn't working. -
Do you THINK Neeld will get the axe this week?
P-man replied to Curry & Beer's topic in Melbourne Demons
Yes, he is, but he will not have anything to do with the NEXT appointment so I don't see what your point is. And again, to hold off on making a decision on such grounds is frankly ludicrous. We were very poor at times in 2011. I sat in the stands at Subiaco. I remember. But this team now is like nothing I've ever witnessed. -
Not yet it hasn't, but it's getting closer. Our only hope is Jackson having balls big enough to fill the Grand Canyon.

pm, again some very valid points raised, however, 20 months in, are you not alarmed by the skill level and overall development of our players? If you had to explain the gameplan on Sunday, could you do it in earnest? That is to say, from a purely football perspective, how have we progressed? (please no mention of fitness because in terms of match fitness we are seemingly woeful) It is fine, and indeed correct, to the point to the cultural failings of our club in the past. But is it not equally valid to say that Neeld us guilty of OVERcorrection in trying to address this? Jackson has said that you should never assume everything done in the past was wrong. It would seem that Neeld drew this conclusion from the moment he arrived, and we are now seeing the effects. He's the one under the microscope because this list and this playing style are his construct. We don't have time on our side now. Supporters are dropping daily, and trying to attract sponsors in 2014 and beyond doesn't bare thinking about. It is at an absolutely critical stage for the future of this club. Brave decisions have to be made.

Staggered that even now, even after watching what their club has become, some are freeing Neeld from blame for this disaster. I watched every game in 2011 and compared to the football being produced now, it seems like a freakin golden era. What Neeld did was walk in the door with Collingwood arrogance tucked into his back pocket, immediately put senior players offside including a widely respected figure around the club in Rivers, push all the games experience out the door and plug it with plodders who simply would not get a run at any other AFL club. Bailey may have got the balance wrong in choosing to stockpile high draft picks (although it now seems far more likely that Bailey was purely working under a directive), but Neeld has COMPLETELY gotten the balance wrong.in his attempt to rebuild a club and its culture by dismantling it entirely and starting from scratch. It has backfired in the worst possible fashion and for that he is very much responsible and accountable, as are those who put him in this position. Which brings me to your last line - hesitant to make a change because we are fearful that another wrong decision will be made? Garbage reasoning. Besides which, Peter Jackson isn't an ex demon last time I checked. Yes it seems like God just plain hates us. The timing of this could not possibly be worse with the club now being $1.5M in debt and expansions clubs taking all the top end talent. But it's at a critical stage with this playing group. The talent we do have will almost certainly walk at the end of their contracts unless change happens soon. Jackson himself said the football must be rectified and everything else flows from that. As things currently stand, I don't believe it can be rectified until there are new people in charge of it. -

I don't want to hate him, nor do I want to hate my club, but it's venturing into that territory. I hate what the club has become and though Neeld is not solely responsible, he carries a large portion of blame. He's been a disaster. Supporters have had enough of this dross. He has to go. HAS to go. Do I think he'll get sacked this week? Sadly not. We're at least in for a few more weeks of pain before Jacko thinks about pulling the pin. Hopefully in wrong and we get some hope of change with an announcement this week. -
We must aim for a big name, tried and tested, successful AFL coach. Exhaust every possible option of Roos, Williams, Eade etc. if all of them give us the big A, only then do we look at the Gary Ayres of the coaching world.

McKenzie and Bail would be one of the first on my list. And it's TrenGOVE. TrenGOVE. Not Grove, Gove. G. O. V. E.

INTO DARKNESS: THE BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS
P-man replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Jonesy never saw it coming this week. Strange how we never see it coming. I admit I am now more concerned about our level of talent. I've previously put alot of it down to a confidence issue, but the fact is we still have ALOT of spuds on our list. -
Neeld Post Match - Platitudes and other nonsense talk
P-man replied to Soidee's topic in Melbourne Demons
Having watched the presser, the context in which Neeld dropped that line was more innocent than it sounds prima facie. I don't think he was trying to lay blame solely on the players. Still, he needs to be extremely wary of such statements. -

I'm honestly staggered by that. I don't dislike him but lines like that make me question his character. Please for gods sake, enough of this. He has to go. -

INTO DARKNESS: THE BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS
P-man replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
I'm watching the end of the match again. The Suns players don't even look that thrilled with their first ever win in Melbourne. They did it so easily from the first bounce it probably felt like they just beat a crappy QAFL side. -
There is zero unity demonstrated on the field in this group. The empty rhetoric coming out of the club is only fooling some. No player can be happy putting together these utterly shambolic performances, the likes of which we haven't seen, and after 20 months, they are undeniably Neeld's product. I see little point in waiting til season's end to make what is an obvious call.

lol Why are we bothering with this?
