Someone to play on tall forwards alongside Steve May? Just a hunch. (BTW, all very well to look at Petty's achievements up forward. Look at what was happening up the other end once we moved him. Lions got 3 goals I believe. That whole farce of a situation with Lever and McStay in the last quarter and resulted in a gifted goal to the Lions came about because Lever was caught out in a one-on-one role he doesn't play well. McStay had been Petty's man.)

Positives: - One more year and one more pre-season into the younger players, which includes a large chunk of our list. - Premiership window very much open. For me in fact, only just opening, last year was a year or two earlier than what you might have expected. I'm looking forward to the next few years and if supporters want back-to-back premierships they'd be better looking at 2024 - 25 than this year.

Can anyone confirm which Melbourne players are eligible, McDonald and Smith in particular. I thought I read somewhere that Tom wouldn't be eligible if Melbourne were eliminated - could be wrong.

In Season - Loading/Periodisation: Put your conjecture here.

Close thread. About the only thing going for it was the "conjecture" in the title, as that's all it ever was. -
Too many players carrying injuries or niggles, plus the cumulative fatigue of spending 2022 at the pointy end + a long 2021 with a deep finals run + reduced off-season/break. Throw into that that a lot of our players are still comparatively young and don't have the deep fitness that 10 years of pre-seasons develops. Not a surprise that so few teams win back to back premierships. Nothing to do with the coaching, or even the fitness staff for that matter. Griffith had the runs on the board, was head-hunted by Burgess and the FD as Burgess's replacement, and spent a year being trained up by Burgess.

Setting himself up for a decent contract somewhere else?
-
If it was more than capable we wouldn't have gone out in straight sets. It's not Goodwin who can't hit a target, or sprays a shot OOB, or gives away 50's or downfield frees, or or or ...
-
How many goals did the Lions get once Petty went forward? By my count, 3. There is no free lunch.
-
It's not the players who need to realise that winning flags isn't easy. It's the supporters. Including quite a few on here.
-
I suspect you could probably add a few to that list, will be interesting to see who goes under the knife in the next few weeks.
-
Sure, but I think people are underestimating the physical toll of running deep into the finals right through to a GF and then the reduced turnaround until the next season. Perhaps no accident that both last year's grand finalists are out. I remember Hardwick talking about how hard it was physically to back up after winning a premiership.

Speak for yourself.

Who's your answer then? An untried kid who's been inconsistent even at Casey (but hopefully will be great in the longer term) or Mitch Brown? We had 22 shots on goal (more than them), not counting a few OOB on the full which were aimed in the general direction of the goals - that should be enough to win a game of footy. Not saying we don't need to look at what's going on with the forward line, but you can't lose your main tall forward/CHF and that not have consequences.
-
Absolutely this. Re kicking, there was a passage in the 3rd quarter where for 4 or 5 shots on goal we managed a couple of OOB on the full and a couple of points.
-
We always needed two tall key defenders. Without the likes of Joel Smith or even Turner, Petty always had to fill that role. Also, I bet that if it had been Petty instead of Lever in that last bizarre play it wouldn't have cost us a goal. Swings and roundabouts. But can see Ben Brown playing out his contract at Casey.

ANB (and Melksham) showing why you back your players rather than dumping them whenever they have an off day.
-
Understand the sentiment, but we've had a few injuries and disruptions in the back half of the year - OK, not many, but enough to key players to be disruptive, May, Tom Mac and Ben Brown in particular.
-
Chandler has also had his chances and not been able to hold his place. As for JVR sure, but he's not exactly been consistently tearing it apart at Casey, even since mid-year. (Main goalscorer is still Brown.) Very different from the season that Hogan had at VFL level where he was clearly a class above.
-
But especially in finals, I feel that changes are about roles, structure and match-ups. Joel Smith for Salem could be one if we want more height and athleticism down back. Tom Mac for someone if we want the two-talls forward so that we can free up Gawn/Jackson to stick to rucking. Wing is another issue, though that's more reorganising who we have out there (though god knows who/how), I can't see us bringing in Baker.
-
Not sure that any of the changes being suggested here will change the result one iota (or would have changed the result on Friday night). It's about how we play, not who we play. OK, maybe some tinkering at the edges, but if we don't put it together a bit better than we did against the Swans, then we'll set ourselves a task.

Your point was "We’ve actually had a very good year injury-wise." Agree, but the injuries we have had have impacted out ability to reach the same heights as last year and perform as consistently. Not by much, but it doesn't need to be much to start losing matches. Salem may be out there but there's a difference been "not injured" and performing to your fullest ability. By his own admission his form isn't where he wants it to be (interview from a few weeks back), and that's because he missed half the season ... with an injury.
-
Agree mostly, but two injuries that continue to have a fairly major impact on the team's performance/structure are: - Tom MacDonald. Him being out there makes the forward line function a lot better - Christian Salem: Has been a shadow of himself since he came back from his injury, including last night. Watch the first quarter of the GF, his drive off half-back was the motor for so much of what followed.
-
Yes, but it's not as if the whole team has been on a roll for 6 weeks and this is just a blip. The players who didn't play well have not been playing consistently well for some time now, so the realistic chance of them "turning it around" are slim in my opinion. Nice to believe in miracles, but in this case ...
-
Yes they do. Nothing but BS in the context of team sports in-season. You only load out of competition (athletics, olympic sports etc.) or between seasons.

Sydney Geelong GF. We've been off the pace all year, not helped by injuries. Hibberd maybe shouldn't have played tonight, Salem hasn't been the same since he came back. Then there are a few of the 'fringe' players who were really solid last year but just haven't put it together in 2022, ANB being the prime example. For mine, best long term result would be to lose against Brisbane so we can have a decent break, freshen up mentally and physically and be primed to attack next season.
