  1. Bigfooty at it's finest. PS we have a draft and trading board. Use it.
  2. Would be interesting to see who wanted him. Personally I'm not sure who is out there with the cash to spend on a nearly 28 year old who's inconsistent and almost certainly not a quality regular midfielder.
  3. He improved throughout the year. That's a pretty amazing feat and I'd say he was the only one who did. Needs to replace a few kg's of flab with a few kg's of muscle and then be fit enough to see more regular midfield time and a more consistent input up forward. And yes he's good on the run but his set shot goal kicking is rubbish. Needs to sort it out.
  4. My only problem, and I see why they did it. Is having Hogan in the video. I would've left him out. Sure he's huge promo value but didn't we learn from the Watts debacle.
  5. No I wasn't at the game. I was at a much better one at the MCG. I'd include Bail as another who's got one eye out the door. My point is if we want Casey to win finals, and I hope they do, then we need the right guys in the team all year so come finals they are a unit and part of the Casey side. Part of that comes from actually having a the right consistent guys in the AFL team and a culture of improvement at Casey. At the moment our players go back to Casey to play well to get back in the Melbourne team because that's all it takes.
  6. 1. Drive to do it. 2. Played in the spirit you want players to play 3. A clear communicator 4. The perfect combination or ruthlessness and compassion 5. A teacher who understands fundamentals 6. Belief in yourself, an ego but understated 7. Less relevant for the senior assistant but a game plan and if really lucky an innovation that works Everyone thinks Ling would be a great coach because he fits most of those categories and even more he's a premiership captain. But he won't take the job because he fails point 1. Right now he wants to keep doing media and running his pubs. And good luck to him
  7. theyll pay the coin to convince him to go. Plus they'll have the cash, may as well spend it. And they'll trade just like every other team do because forcing players into the PSD is a dangerous move. GWS do it to Bellchambers all of a sudden Melbourne do it to Taylor Adams and so on
  8. Depends on your definition of cheating doesn't it. It's very simplistic but you can say. A) They broke an AFL law B) The did it in a pursuit to get better Therefore in doing A + B that means they cheated which is the same thing as getting an unfair advantage. But they are certainly being punished in 2013 for what they did in 2012. But if Essendon took their rightful spot in 6th or 7th it's very likely Collingwood would've knocked them off. Richmond might have beaten Port as well. And then both those 2 would've won. At the moment we have no more Collingwood, no more Richmond and I really hope no more Carlton next week. Now if someone can just do something about Hawthorn.
  9. Role players are vital, but I have my concerns about Richmond. Jake King, Dan Jackson, Chaplin as the second tall defender when he's very much a float off man, Morris, Petterd, Tuck. No doubt the expansion sides have hurt their depth of talent. Carlton are much the same, especially when they run Armfield, Bell and Curnow through the midfield. But a guy who was really in as a role player did a tremendous job in Duigan. Although I think at the end of it all the biggest difference was Richmond lost a runner early in Conca. Then Judd got involved and in terms of elite mids it became 2 (in Judd and Murphy) against one in Cotchin. Deledio just isn't the type of guy who says finals performer and Dustin Martin continues to be a lot of flash but not a lot of substance. I think if you win these 4 categories (and they are all linked of course) then you often win a final: 1. The ruck. A big man at the contest and around the ground is huge. 2. Dominant mid or mids. Having that 1 or 2 guy who just keeps winning the ball is huge 3. Ability to grind, holding up when you're against play and keep on going when you have it 4. Winning the battle of depth players, the bottom 6 so to speak
  10. A lot of Casey's problem this year was injuries and I don't think MFC can be blamed for that. The 3rd and 2nd last game we lose Rodan, Byrnes, Blease, Strauss and Fitzpatrick and then Hogan and Magner go down in the VFL. Spencer also gets injured late in the season. Not to mention Couch missing an extended period. Besides Clisby (and is there any factual proof he was sent home by MFC) what others were pulled out? The way I see it part of the problem is that we have a MFC Casey list full of potatoes. Guys like Sellar, Jetta, Davis, Gillies, Magner and Couch who just aren't AFL and therefore the step to VFL finals finds them out a bit as well. It's also the wrong type of guys to be building a committed finals campaign around. I expect under Roos he will have a select group of 25 he'll be keen to play most weeks and he'll look for a group of 5 Mitch Morton senior types who also get their shot. Another 5 or so we'll be Brandon Jack or Jed Lamb types who come in for trials at AFL. The rest will be building from the ground up. What that will mean at Casey is that we actually have a group of guys who really have to improve week after week to even get a look in and who will be young and hungry and talented. If we want Casey to win a flag it won't be around guys wondering how close to finished their AFL careers are and where they'll get a job next year. It will be around the basis of guys like Taggert, Barry, Gawn etc who actually have talented but are building it up at Casey. We didn't have the luxury of Kent and Toumpas joining that Casey squad, they were too good compared to our regular Demons 22 so they had to be in the senior side. Neeld tried to stack the 22 with a lot of mature types so the young guys could develop properly at Casey. Instead the mature types were crap, the guys at Casey didn't do enough and a lot of the young guys got AFL time. This was an even worse result than just going for the ultra young list like in the Bailey days.
  11. Possibly a Geelong one for Ablett that floated around being GC and GWS and mini trades and so on. But yes I believe they do but I wouldn't at all be surprised if it heads to Essendon in exchange for Bellchambers. If GWS pay the coin and convince him to come it's the right trade value for a ready made decent enough and young enough ruck. It's about what Jolly got traded for twice.
  12. Unsure what manic obsessiveness Longmire has? To me he seems reasonably cool and calm and at times that might be an advantage. Footy is an unpredictable game, adding complex structures therefore is in a lot of ways illogical. I personally think Simpson would bring a very good mix of fire and composure and would also combine the Clarkson game plan with the Roos game plan. That's a pretty nice mix. He'd also be the midfield coach for 2-3 years until he became the head coach. That's the most positive thing of the succession plan, the CFO who's across all the most important aspects then becomes the CEO and the company continues without missing a beat.
  13. Personally I'd settle for the second best player available at every pick that we have. That way we'd always get decent quality players in which to build a side as well as our share of quality. Oh and Wines was good last night. But hardly amazing. His second goal out of the pack impressed me a lot. He also has much better skills than the draft guys gave him credit for...or they are standing up to AFL pressure much better than many would have thought. But it's all irrelevant. I'm also of the belief than Sam Mayes is >>>>> than Wines and Toumpas. But I don't have a thread for that yet.
  14. Uploaded with ImageShack.us So We've got Dean Bailey on the left. His plan is to get a whole bunch of skilled players and play an attacking skillful game plan. Then we've got Mark Neeld on the right, he wants to make us the hardest team to play against and is full of tough talk. Paul Roos in the middle though, he's got this all sorted, he just wants more midfielders.
  15. So it works out as pick 2 for Adams and Rory Sloane. Talk about immediate midfield impact right there.
  16. I've heard that he doesn't want to do it. That's why he's been an assistant at Geelong, StKilda and then Sydney and only now has he been talked up. You'd think with that resume he would've been all the rage for the last few years if he was keen.
  17. Nathan Bassett could be a smoky as well. His record with success and player development is off the charts, but apparently he's turned down multiple offers of assistant jobs before. Maybe a senior assistant job would be a completely different opportunity that he'd be interested in.
  18. The emerging Dees really put on a clinic against the tiring swans that day. Our young running players were too skilled and too smart and our midfield held up very well against a swans midfield that needed some rejuvenation with the likes of Kieran Jack and Josh Kennedy having taken them back to the top since that day. Unfortunately they regrouped whilst Dean Bailey kept backing in the shaky parts of any plan - outside flashy football - without cementing the stuff that actually sets up those kind of wins.
  19. I don't. He wouldn't have got the value out of Kane Cornes for one. He might not have brought Monfries over or had the faith in little Jakey Neade who was fantastic at the start of the year. Plus remember Port one a bunch of close games including 2 very close showdowns they probably had not right to win. It's much easier to win those games with complete faith in your coach and the coach in the players. Primus didn't have that. One case for your argument though is Darren Burgess the fitness guy coming on. He's helped Hartlett get into the midfield and Gray stay on the park and the overall fitness level im sure.
  20. Yeah but we need stars as well. When has a team ever won the grand final without some serious class in the midfield, even Sydney under Roos had Goodes. Based on those averages it looks like we need at least 5 in the top 100 and averaging around that 25 touches a week. I think with proper coaching either or both Terlich and Grimes can get that off half back. Matt Jones on a wing. Sylvia, Viney and Nathan Jones in the guts and maybe even Trengove as well. That's 7 players who I think are easily capable of getting it over 20 times a week. Roos shouldn't treat this just like Sydney. We are a low way down, the expectations of a quick turnover are not that high. He doesn't have to sell out all the draft picks to get a team capable of instant significant improvement within his 2-3 years. The other thing is that if he trades the picks he might not get the guns in that we think. Which will improve the team but without the skill level taking a step up maybe the disposal numbers wont either. No doubt Roos can improve the list, but there is still a huge need for talent turnover. We've got probably half the list who are almost complete dead wood. I'd say at least 12 are so far off it I doubt any coach could save their careers. The best way for the talent turnover is and always will be the draft.
  21. Matthew Primus! Now that really is putting the Mad into Mad Melbourne. Have a look how much better Port are now they've got a coach who knows what they are doing.
  22. Haha I see you pretty much posted my thoughts exactly. Couldn't agree more.
  23. No way. We only have 10 decent midfielders on our list and some should be in the VFL (Matt Jones, Toumpas, Evans shouldn't be regulars at this stage). We urgently need depth just as much as a star. A star will just carry a huge load unnecessarily. Get a mature guy, maybe get a Taylor Adams as well and then still get a potential star at the top of the draft. We shouldn't be looking at Roos to just maximize wins in the next two years. He still has to maximize the list potential as well.
  24. I'd be happy for Tudor, Simpson or Scott Burns If we went with Ling I'd be much more confident if Roos was keen to stay for 3 years. I don't want another false start rebuild ala Bailey
  25. You know anyone who has ever had an appreciation thread on here has ended up fired usually in a huge mess. But a good start by PJ. MFCSS
