How Chris Scott differs from other AFL coaches
DeeSpencer replied to djr's topic in Melbourne Demons
Pack the backline and defend like mad was excellent game style??? It was the best thing for us in 14 and 15 but otherwise did very little in terms of trying to play like a successful side. -

I know, but when you leave Qld to go to the school that played in the first ever game of footy you don't need your academy any more. Frankly it's double dipping. And makes it hard to say he's a product of the development work Brisbane did. -
I reckon plan A was to have Windsor sneak through and grab Curtin/Caddy first. Plan B was Windsor at 7, hope 2 others (Wilson, ?) went and then have one of the talls in Caddy/Curtin/O’Sullivan get through. Not that I’m unhappy with Kolt or that he wouldn’t have been part of the plan to go up and secure someone higher up. But he wasn’t the optimal result. It’s obviously better when you have situation like Rivers in 2019 fall to your pick and you get the win of the player without spending more draft capital.

It’s often first in best dressed with moving up in the draft but I’d rather actually wait until the draft and see just who is available at the picks before we trade up this year. It’s a deep draft so someone should fall to 30, meanwhile I reckon we got caught out in 20/21 and even last year trading up and not getting our most preferred targets.

Was he injured or unwell? 8 touches for a guy who averages 25 is highly unusual

Here’s a minor overhaul- you can’t be in the Brisbane Academy if you go to Melbourne Grammar and play at Sandy Dragons. Takes one second to fix that problem. -
Does he though? He’s born in January and has spent the entire year as a full time footballer. He’ll obviously get stronger but I doubt power will ever be a big part of his game, he’s got a wiry frame. Reid might have more of a bulky frame to add power once he gets in to a full time environment.

We were 3 goals up because we had the wind for 2 of the 3 quarters. Freo scored 1 goal in the first and third. We scored 1 goal in the second. The game was going to tighten up in the last and make scoring in to the wind incredibly hard. 1 goal 4 in the 3rd quarter was where we lost it.
-
The Hore holding the ball came about because she tried to do it all herself. Same as her shot at goal in the 3rd quarter with 2 spare alone in the square. Good player, but needs to work with her team mates to go up another level. That’s harder when half of them are unknowns.
-
Please. They lost 4 best 21 players in trade week. Have another 6 out injured. And lost 2 more in game. Freo were always going to charge late with the wind. Game was lost in the 3rd not converting chances but the forward line today had 2 players who’d get a game in full strength side and 4 who aren’t up to it.

Haha that’s not a tackle

Trademark horrendous weak Bannan contest as the ball went inside 50 there. She’s so bad
-
Mackin injured. Zanker possible acl? Just fold the comp
-
No idea why Hore wasn’t back the whole quarter and a bad effort from Colvin to concede 2 goals in quick succession. We need a miracle now

How about the shape he was in when he turned up for preseason and was right down the back in the running? Or how bad he was in his positioning even with basic around the ground work rate in the ruck? Or his initial form when sent back to Casey? He was never serious about fighting for his spot, the moment he lost it he was off elsewhere. -
Hungry hungry Hore. Had 2 in the square loose

And not once have Melbourne bagged him. If he was to open his mouth they’d be plenty coming back the other way. He had 17 chances to impress the coaches and it never worked. Goody gave him a lot longer run than it deserved really. -
I think he’s super difficult to rate, I’m not even sure where I’d have him. But you see the fast hands right? He has the ball and then it’s out right away and often straight to a player in space.
-
Reid’s a better goal kicker (does spend more time forward) but the biggest point of difference is his hands are on an entirely different level. Some of, if not the quickest and most creative hands you’ll ever see. There’s plenty of concerns - is he physical, is he athletic enough, can he add distance and flatten his kicking - although they are similar (if lesser) concerns for me with Jagga. But his hands might be the standout trait of any player in the draft. If you think there’s enough scope to develop the rest of his game you got to take him very early.
-
I agree with that. Except with his overhead marking and pace I’d start him half forward rather than wing. Kicking hasn’t looked right this year but there’s no doubt he can roost it. He reminds me of Rozee. He was the best player at under 16’s, the best last year and has just had a shocking year with a run of injuries.
-
Nothing official yet, I imagine GWS are probably going to try to hold him for a useful pick (40’s) given multiple teams want him.
-
He rucked a bit in earlier years but Brisbane added a bunch of young rucks and he played pretty much the whole time forward in 2023. Only had double digit hit outs once. He just isn’t a natural with using his body in a physical way but he is athletic.
