NON-MFC: Round 18
It's only midway through the respective second quarters, but Freo isn't dominating Hawthorn, while Sydney is playing a tentative game against North. Everyone is vulnerable once the wildness of finals start. Geelong didn't look especially impressive in the pieces of the game I watched last night, to the point where I think the 'Pies are in major trouble and Geelong might still slip out of the 8. Everyone is vulnerable is we choose to be the hunter.

The No T$ No B$ Thread
Speaking of parrots and rum... Wait, did I already tell the story of how pirate rum was very weak and actually reached a perfect balance where it was as weak as possible (water down for profit, of course) but also exactly strong enough for the alcohol to kill off all the bacteria and such that would infect 'just water'? It is a pretty cool case of nothing more than habits and reactions leading to a precision result. Pirate rum is better for you than water. If you're a pirate, at least.

Demonstone's YACK (Yet Another Cryptic Kerfuffle)
When Clausewitz stated that "It is in the nature of the French to attack", he was referring to a very different spirit than the ennui that had them labelled 'cheese eating surrender monkeys' a century later.

Demonstone's YACK (Yet Another Cryptic Kerfuffle)
Timothy Reddan-A'Blew has successfully identified 'Lovett or leave et' and therefore gets to choose which Lovett that refers to. Demonstone gets the nod for Little Red Truck being Van Rooyen - Rooyen being 'red' in Afrikaans, where the name (or that spelling of it in particular) is mostly from. Leaving only the much loved Daniher era stalwart who remarkably only played in one finals win. * Rolling attack of the French!

* Rolling attack of the French! Daniher era * Or leave et. Northey-Balme almost precisely * Little red truck. Current young player

Demonstone's YACK (Yet Another Cryptic Kerfuffle)
Forgive me, I'm new at this and generally terrible at solving them myself. My clues may actually be terrible, too. All typos are deliberate. (E.g. the islnad for Peter Rohde not being Rhode) Hmm, in an oversight, I didn't confine it quite to the 2000+, one of the remaining is from the Northey-Balme era. (As was Rohde, for that matter!) One is a much respected Daniher stalwart and another is currently playing.

Having trouble editing my post with the given answers, Lucifers' Hero got ' fish out of water' as GARLAND Mo64 got 'stupid name for a state' with Peter ROHDE

Demonstone's YACK (Yet Another Cryptic Kerfuffle)
Demonstone knocked off Hopgood and Morton and Lucifer's Hero picked up Broadbridge. I'll be curious to see if anyone else thinks in the same strange loops I have for the others!

Demonstone's YACK (Yet Another Cryptic Kerfuffle)
Okay @Demonstoneemonstone, I'm going on the counterattack. These are deliberately nonsensical just to try to hurt you and some follow the same rules as above, while others obviously don't. This is what you get for upsetting me. AGAIN. Rolling attack of the French! Is it wide enough for a wooden horse to cross? Troy Broadbridge. Fish out of water. Can't run or even walk, but isn't evil. Hopgood. Or leave et. Increase the weight. Morton Stupid name for a state. It's not even an actual islnad. Little red truck.

Free to Air TV Losing Money and Shedding Jobs - What does that mean for footy?
Tell me it ain't true. Don't crush my hopes! The most recent news I saw was that Taylor was in trouble on account of half the existing clique being sacked. One moment... here it is; https://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/bt-would-be-terrified-afl-commentary-rumours-swirl-after-surprise-sacking/news-story/c27fecb95de8c748041a00474a1ad1bd

Well, I for one will be much more concerned about how farmers are going to find wives in this bleak future.

Trade Targets
Knowing a deeply engaged Carlton fan who loves telling me all about it, I can verify. Carlton supporters generally see the whole period since Malthouse took over up until last season as a serious underperformance of what could and should have been an incredible squad. Firmly placed in the hands of Malthouse and a deeper club culture problem very similar to what we on Demonland referred to with variations on 'Messiah complex'. In short, they had their set of absolutely unmistakeable guns like Walsh, Cripps, Weitering, Curnow, Docherty and McKay, and a sense of 'they are the ones that matter' crept in. This meant that it was 'okay' for Saad to just do the thing he was good at and be a little slack defensively, etc etc etc Throw that together with the lack of depth, which they tried to fill by rolling the dice on all kinds of 'not premium' recruits, and you got a very brittle team that was constantly being exposed by 6-goal bursts against them. I'd say things started to turn from about the time Cerra came in and did exactly the job he was recruited for - being a very good but not 'gun' midfielder, and then things started to click thanks to the likes of Hewett, Kennedy and Newman all building some confidence and consistency. It'll be interesting to see how things hold up - their 'gun' players are mostly 24-27yrs but many of their solid citizens are 28+. Just to add a strange quirk - Melbourne's fielder a significantly younger team in the game against Carlton than they did, but at the same time Carlton had only 4 players with more than 150 games and NONE over 200, in contrast to our 6 and 4.

Food at the Footy
It's a strange one; stadium food logistics doesn't seem to have been figured out. Some of the vendors seem barely better organised than a Hume Highway truck stop. Hmm, actually, that's not a surprise now I think of it because those truck stops are often catering for sudden rushes as a tour bus or intercity bus pulls in with 40 people who all need to drop a Maynard and have a snack before they get back on the bus. Seems to me the key problem will always be that if you try to 'elevate' food you always get the penalty that slightly fewer people will want a particular item. The fewer potential customers per item becomes a serious problem when the potential buyers are trying to make a decision and complete a transaction in 5 minutes, and there is a lot of geographic segmentation of the 'marketplace', so to speak. I'll make the trip to Petersham for a Portugese tart on a saturday morning, but would I willingly miss the start of the second half because I'm circling the concourse of the MCG looking for a Portugese tart? Anyway, I think we can all agree that the answer is gozleme.

Adam Simpson departs West Coast
Simpson carried him self with dignity right to the end and did the ultimate team thing in taking the heat and drama out of this decision weeks and even months in advance. What's the Shakespearean quote? "Nothing (except a premiership) in his life became him like the leaving it" That's a bit unfair given the premiership and six consecutive finals appearances to go with it, but taken on the last few years it'll do.

Oscar Allan
Sam Faff is the archetypical nobody just stirring his bucket of Maynards to get attention. But it is still a rumour I'd be happy to stoke just to annoy West Coast.

Jason Taylor - visionary or overrated
Sorry to jump ahead because it looks like Deespicable is going to walk through the drafts chronologically (Thanks, looking forward to it @Deespicable ) I looked at this thread, then I looked at the 'Kozzie Pickett 100 games' thread, then I looked at the 2019 draft. Pickett is indeed the first of his draft to reach 100. Chasing breakaway includes Anderson (97) Serong (96) Rivers (93) Ash (93) and Jackson (91).

Kozzie Pickett - 100 games
The list of small forwards who have been consistently delivering ~40 goals a season from just their second season woudl be a very short piece of paper. Come to think of it, there would be very few small forwards who reached 100 games at just barely 23yrs old. A testament to the fact he has continued to be dangerous and to make a contribution even when his form has been a bit off. I'm glad for him that he has put together a really nice run of form ready to celebrate his 100th with seven goals against the Buttersoft Bombers.

PREGAME: Rd 18 vs Essendon
The clear group of youngest teams last round were North at 24 years 9 months, Gold coast at 24yr 11m, and Adelaide at 25 yrs. We came in at 25yrs 8 months average age against West Coast (lol we were younger than them). If it is Fullarton in for Gawn then we drop by 7yrs total, or about 4 months average over the team. Make that 12yrs difference if we try out one of the ruck kids. Realistically we could be putting out the fourth youngest team for the round. Go stealth rebuild, go!
