Massive difference in taking on a guy 1 year out of the game who didn't have any injury issues, he was just fat. Bennell hasn't effectively played for 4 years, who knows if he's even still got the same speed, reflexes or coordination.

Brereton was another who had a year off due to injury then went to the swans and then the pies and was horrible.

Until he proves he can run and maintain a decent level of fitness for some time I'd be avoiding him

That's the theory behind offering him two years with a trigger clause for a third. One year to get his game back in shape, second year he needs to perform. Length of contract could be a big factor in luring him to Melbourne.

...and of another one they took with Garlett.

    They don't always pan out.

I love the thought of getting a player like the Bennell that took us apart at the 'G' a fair few years back now for next to nothing.

...but the chances are he won't ever get back to that standard with injury, attitude and time out of the game being major concerns.

I agree it's not a high percentage move, but the potential rewards are great if it comes off. Given how little it costs to take the chance it is worth the risk. Offer him two years with an activation clause in his second. He gets a year to get fit and find form, then he needs to play senior footy in 2021.

Don't get why so many are so keen on him, and are down on the club for not taking a risk on him (even though they still could??). The guy hasn't played AFL well for 4 season, the 2 games he had for Freo were in 2017 and weren't anything remotely special. I get that he's had massive talent in the past, and his game against Geelong in 2014 was seriously one of the better games you'll ever see by an individual. But it's been 4 season, since he's played a good game!

Reminds me of a punt Hawthorn took once on a fat ex-footballer.

I'm convinced this has been our plan the whole time and that we will take Kemp at 8. We traded next years first for him but he wont play in 2020. He will be effectively our first pick in the 2020 draft. Really good trading IMO, we get a top 5 talent next year regardless of our finishing place in 2020.

I HOPE this is the thinking.

Ok, but what’s the point in nominating a Player that is 100% going to be recruited by GWS to whom he is “allocated”.

Besides which he’s another inside mid.  Puzzling post!

To force them to use their first pick on him. If he's not nominated before their first pick then they grab another talented kid and then pay for him later in the draft.

Mahoney traded away our 2020 1st round pick to North , banking on us rising up the ladder next season.

We need to take ready made kids at 3 and 8 who can impact immediately.

Kemp will miss all of 2020.  We will not be drafting Kemp.

Or possibly he feels that the player we're eyeing off at 8 this year is better than anyone we'll get in the next draft?  Given that Kemp won't play next year you could regard him as next year's draftee.  His quality would put him well in the upper ranks of next year's group.

I look at that footage of Kemp and I see good burst pace and plenty of power.  His attack on the ball reminds me a little of some plays David Schwarz made in his day where he burst through tackles.  Obviously this kid isn't another Schwarz (wouldn't it be awesome if he were?), but he has power and explosiveness and he can kick.  We keep talking about how the club plays it safe with their picks.  This is another kind of risk, and we should back ourselves in to manage him properly and get a star out of it.

Harley Bennell would be a hell of a lot cheaper and if he can get back to his best, and that’s a big if but at his best he is twice as good as Martin

Ideally I'd like us to go after both of them.

A one year deal would take Martin to him being a RFA, if we did take him for one year then Carlton offered him what they’re offering him now (or similar) we could get near an end of first round compensation pick.

He wouldn't be a FA if he came to us.

Ex Tiger OD, whose playing in the SANFL with Glenelg. Key Forward.

Although I believe we are showing some interest in and have interviewed Ben Sokol from Subiaco.

Another forward OD but not that tall, more of a medium size. Kicked 60 in the WAFL this season

He's also over 2m tall, mid 20s and topped the goalkicking for Glenelg this year. He walked out on the Tigers because he didn't want to play footy anymore, grew up a bit and decided he really does want to play, hence the SANFL. Good on set shots too.

Funny that we see footballers on TV and they look massive but when I have met them in person I am struck by how finely they are built. On TV Steven Tingay looked like a brick s4ithouse but when I met him he was in my opinion average height and lightly built. Max Gawn tall but a string bean, Scully - midget, Mark Jackson average body size but taller than me. Tapscott average height average size body. I have always thought that I could have run though any of them if I could catch them (no chance) So we probably need to compare footballers with footballers not with the average Australian, so you are right on Tapscott as a big bodied medium footballer built like a brick [censored] house, I still reckon I could take him. hahaha

Funny, I've mostly had the opposite reaction.  Guys like Dunn and Robertson were much bigger in person than they seemed on the TV.  Of course, I also bumped into JKH in a crowd and he barely came up to my chin, so it goes both ways...

I find it curious that there has been absolutely no mention of the fact that with Martin unsigned, there seemingly being an impass regarding his future at GC, and that we have PDS picks before the Blues that we would position ourselves to pinch him. Is there just an assumption now that Carlton will find a way to manipulate things to get him there?

It was mentioned very briefly on SEN.  They felt that Martin might put an unrealistic price on himself to discourage us.  Not sure that would work given Carlton can't be any better off than us with their cap.  Maybe the theory is that he goes to them then renegotiates a new deal?

Either way, as far as I'm concerned he's the best possible option for us in the PSD.  Certainly a better option than upgrading a rookie to fill a list spot or re-signing Stretch and JKH.

  12. I think it's a bit of a Meh to be honest.  Langdon for a second round pick is fine.  Frost was an ok deal.  I think we lost out a but on the gifting of extra low-round picks in the deals we made.  I'm certainly not sold on giving up next year's first pick, although the draft looks like it will suck so maybe it's worth it.  My big issue is that we went and got our two easy targets and then sat on our hands for the rest of the period.  Maybe the press simply didn't hear about any attempts, but surely we should have been sniffing around trying to shake get in on Martin or Papley or trying to bring in a tall forward?

  13. I too like the look of Jordan. I think he'll take a little time to get his body ready for AFL, but he moves really well and looks to have good disposal. I suspect he's going to wind up one of those guys who just look smooth and have a little more time than they should.

  14. I don't know if this has been floated before and can't be bothered reading 27 pages to find out. What would people think of Peter Wright and Jack Martin as a package? I have a feeling we need to use a first round pick this year, but if we sent picks 3 and 26 their way in exchange for Wright, Martin and 15?

    Or his mate Aunty Jack?

I know a few on here are hoping it's Gunston, but I think he's cooked. After taking unders to win premierships in true Hawks style, I reckon he's been told to top up his super somewhere else. Not interested.

Cooked at 27? I think he might have a couple of games left in him.

  16. I wonder if we threw Stretch and pick three at GC for a player and a later first round pick, who would we be able to get?  I know there were rumours around Stretch going there.  A drop from third to fifteenth should warrant a pretty good player.  Maybe convince Martin that his future is with us?
