One word analysis of the Freo cowd: Boo
-
There are plenty of other MFC players who have been no better than Watts who get far less heat here. Even if we leave aside the spiteful and mean spirited (of which there is more than a 'little'), the extraordinary level of heat repetitively focussed on Watts is effectively maligning him regardless of the factual basis of what is written. Doubtless it is because we all held such high hopes and have been disappointed. But many of us are sick of the relentless posts putting the boot into him - every second thread somehow ends up bringing Watts' poor performance into it. It even got into the discussion of last night's final with a couple of posters taking the opportunity to say Watts' would be a waste of space in such a high pressure final. Perhaps so, but most of us could think of a few other current players who would be the same.

Any possibility that we can have one thread which doesn't turn into a Watts bashing/defence?

Did the AFL make a huge mistake denying us a priority pick last year?
sue replied to SaberFang's topic in Melbourne Demons
We should do the same just to make a point. -
Not commenting on Howe specifically, but I wonder if coaches fiddle some mid B&F rankings with an eye to increasing trade value.

Feel free to lay into Watts, but to try to shoe-horn Hogan's statement vs Watt's self-dropping into support of your view of Watts is over the top. And yes, a player who has never actually played a real AFL game may well say what Hogan said - he may know what is 'expected' but until you do it yourself it may be self-protective to have a modest aim. I'm more surprised that some haven't said that with Hogan's general swagger and on-field attitude, he couldn't have really meant it - false modesty.

That's being pedantic. The point is that it was the first year he was playing FCS.

I reckon that is plain silly. A first year player is likely to say what Hogan said. We don't know the exact details of Watt's asking to be dropped, but it is equally plausible to consider his actions as showing leadership and putting the team first. Maybe more than equally.

Some serious questions asked about Paul Roos ...
sue replied to dazzledavey36's topic in Melbourne Demons
Not to mention that he did apparently fix it in the last match. Now maybe that last win was because of factors other than the coach, but one could say that about the previous month too. -
Cuts both ways - you could argue that now that we have these hard-at-it blokes doing that part of the job, Watts will get the inside service he needs. Too many black and white positions being taken on this I feel. Let's see the club's decision.

The Rising Star Thread - Congratulations Jesse Hogan!
sue replied to Nascent's topic in Melbourne Demons
http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2015-09-09/hogan-the-rising-star "The 195cm Claremont product made the most of his opportunities, with his goalkicking accuracy (62 per cent) better than any of the top 10 players in the Coleman Medal race." And every week the TV commentators say how bad his approach to his deliberate kick at goal is...... It does look weird but.... -
Might be worth trying digital radio because that is a couple of seconds behind am or fm transmission. (haven't got Fox so never tried it myself).

The Rising Star Thread - Congratulations Jesse Hogan!

Do the gambling firms pay out if it is a draw or do they keep the lot? I bet the AFL are politically balancing giving some joy to the many supporters of the big bottom team vs the natural choice. -
This it from AFL site article about Roos and trading. Feel free to join in with the pointless speculation: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-09-06/demons-will-be-active-in-trade-period-says-roos Watts, who dropped himself earlier this year and responded well, played 20 games this season but was left out for the final round and is regularly speculated about as a trade table pawn for the Demons. Roos said the decision was made because the club is trying to "set up a really clear framework and guideline as to how we can get better as a footy team". "Jack had an outstanding eight or nine-week period in the middle of the season, but like a lot of guys he's dropped off over the last five or six weeks," Roos said after the Demons' 26-point win at Etihad Stadium, which ended a 22-game drought at the venue. "He wasn't Robinson Crusoe, but we still had to pick 22. He was probably more stiff in terms of the guys who did play. He understands that. "What we've got to try and get across to all our players is that for us to be a really good footy club over time, we've got to be consistent as a footy club."

Wow D-L, you certainly see a lot of what is not there. Sexist discussion? If you want to be clearer in what you write, I suggest you don't use phrases like 'make a man of him' and expect people to read it in the way you have now tried to explain.

rumours on bigfooty are only one iota less believable than the ones on here.

Unless you have a very personal reason otherwise, surely everyone is hoping the Dogs pull off a miracle?

GWS were lucky we missed a lot of shots when we dominate earlier in the game. -
My eyesight and hearing isn't what it was and at 700km away I find the TV works better (though turning the sound off is best)

careful or you will make fools of those posting that no one ever attacks Watts personally, it's just his football. Of course you mean make a man of him solely in footy terms and his mother is stopping him by refusing to darn his socks.

Roos made it clear he was dropped - see article on AFL website: "He wasn't Robinson Crusoe, but we still had to pick 22. He was probably more stiff in terms of the guys who did play. He understands that." Most of what he said about Watts was positive, so unless Roos is pumping up his value.......

Dear ENYAW - it is possible to express the views I have without thinking Watts is the bees-knees or any where near it. I say he cops it out of all proportion to his performance. Doubtless this is because of disappointed hopes in a #1 pick. Understandable as that is, it doesn't justify the over-the-top continual denigration. Dr Gonzo's remarked that this only happens because people defend him. Like every week I see a new (or hijacked) thread that starts off by praising Watts. Ha.

Sadly true. Watts must actually be pretty tough mentally. Not only does he have to put up with 'support' from supporters, but I've noticed that he often gets bronx cheers from opposition supporters. That says a lot about the inferiority complexes of such people.

It never ceases to amaze me that some of you blokes focus so much on Watts. There are plenty of other players performing below expectations or hopes, but with the recent exception of Toumpas no one looks at their draft and says their NikNat equivalent would have been so much better.
