  1. For all his accolades; games, goals, captain record holder, at times I wonder if Neeta is still a tiny bit under appreciated in the history of the MFC. I'm pretty sure in another ten years he will be thought of a rung below Flower and Lyon, and I'm not sure he should be. He did more unsung things than either of those two greats.
  2. Another thing this shows is the value of a big hulking marking forward in a tight wet Final. Neitz didn't kick a bag but set up crucial goals and near misses in the second half, when the real pressure was on. The sealer to Yze, near miss to Bruce in the last five minutes for example. Step on up Mitch Clark.
  3. Just go to 1.00.40 You know the bit. Just before half time. One of my favourite Demon moments of the last decade.
  4. C - Frawley VC - Moloney, Grimes LG - Jamar, Jones, Trengove, Clark, Green
  5. Thanks for the compliment Webber. I agree with you in many ways, and I just so hope you're right.
  6. Yes. I just think this construct illuminates the need for a certain gravity; a sense of a man for a man's job. Michael Voss was a man at 21. No criticism at all, but I don't have that sense about Jordie, JT or Frank Grimes for 2012.
  7. Here's my way of looking at the captaincy. It's beautifully unscientific, but I'm a writer so romanticism is my stock-in-trade. Imagine (and I hope you only ever have to imagine) that you're in the heat of battle. In the cauldron of war, in the trench with the enemy just ahead. You get orders to go. You're scared as hell, but you know this is why you're here. You have just enough time for one glance at the bloke next to you. One last connection. One last sense of shared purpose and fighting for the right. Who do you want to see? Who will make you think "we can do this, and we will prevail"? Who will make you go, when every fibre in your body and mind is seeking survival and self-preservation; the most basic human instinct there is? In recent AFL history, for me, Glenn Archer, David King, yes Nathan Buckley, Luke Hodge (maybe), Todd Viney, Garry Lyon, Michael Voss... Seriously try to imagine this. You are putting everything in the hands of this person. Of our current list? James Frawley Brent Moloney Mark Jamar Maybe Nathan Jones That is all. For 2012.
  8. This time last year it was down to two candidates. Have we totally written off the other contender for 2011 - Aaron Davey?
  9. The people who will never be forgotten; the architects of Melbourne's 13th premiership: Jim Stynes Garry Lyon Don McLardie Mark Neeld Quality men and true Demons. (Maybe a bit premature on Mark, but I'm optimistic!)
  10. Sat with some "inner sanctum" Filth supporters today. They said that, in their ideal world, with Malthouse leaving, their first pick would have been for Neeld to take over, not Buckley. They say Buckley has not won over the players.
  11. As I mentioned on the JT thread, I think James Frawley will be the next captain of the MFC. All over Generation D, plays every week, a few years ahead of Trengove and Watts, rock solid. Can drag the team along with him next year.
  12. Thinking about the club's latest collateral, especially Generation D, think there's a big chance of James Frawley for 2012 captain. He's a few years ahead of JT and Watts, committed with every fibre in his body, and he just plays every week. In the mould of his uncle at the Saints. And could drag the team along with him.
  13. Can O'Meara (or any of the 17 yr olds for that matter) play in 2012, or are they selected but ineligible to play until 2013?
  14. I think a lot of the time Cameron was recruiting the big body solid midfielder was in vogue - as established by Brisbane and to some degree Collingwood 2001 - 2004. I think disposal skills carried a smaller premium than being able to smash packs for a big part of that era. Hence Maclean, Sylvia, Moloney, Jones.
  15. I like it. I really like it. Not sure what it means for Brad Green though.
  16. Let's see how much noise we can make in a sterile stadium the first time number 9 grabs the ball. I'm serious - see if we can get a roar.
  17. Tigers are going this year.
  18. Also, where does Todd Viney fit? One quote from the article: "Indeed since Jeans in 1989, no coach who has not played for a premiership coach has won a flag. This is very important food for thought." Don't think Viney and Barassi crossed paths.
  19. Not sure if this has been posted here before, but this is a super-interesting piece of research about coaching "bloodlines". Based on this Laidley starts to look even better... Comments? http://tooserious.net/top-coaches-are-bred-not-born
  20. Yep. Respect for the jumper as well.
  21. ^ This.
  22. It should be: This is a whole new season that starts this week. Forget every single thing that's happened in 2011. That's pre-season, and pre-season always has ups and downs. Our season starts on Saturday. We have a few tough games to start, but here's how we're going to absolutely let them know they're playing a tough team. We need to win four games this season, and we are going to, starting this week. This will be a season they talk about for 100 years, because of what the Melbourne Football Club was able to achieve. Just four wins to make it all happen. It starts now.
  23. Anyone heard from Alan Joyce lately? Two time premiership coach.
  24. Greg Hutchison?
