As a youngster new to the game I was fascinated with all the quirks of an away day at a suburban ground. Windy Hill was interesting with it's croquet club in one corner and a bowling green on the outer wing that barely allowed enough space for a spectator to get from one flank to the other during a game. Then there was the art deco Showers Stand that I think has now been knocked down.

Although we never won there I liked Arden Street for the fact it had a dozen rows of seats all the way around the ground which I read used to be a greyhound track. The area had a real industrial ghost town feel about it on a weekend. The Western Oval was another favourite that had a hot dog shape with completely straight wings and a weird viewing platform on the outer wing that Mick Malthouse used to access by climbing a ladder on match days.

Grounds I didn't like were the completely soulless VFL Park and dumps like Moorabbin and Victoria Park with their rabies infested supporters. The Junction Oval and Lakeside Oval were ramshackle and not fit for purpose whilst Princes Park still has that Hawthorn Stand and it's weird rollercoaster shaped roof that has always bugged me. More so after the extended it into the outer end.

You missed the 1971 fixture! We smashed North by over one hundred points. We got into the ground about the ten minute mark and the Dees were already 7 goals up. Brian Dixon was North coach. The group-think was that VFL Park was soulless but we loved that ground, it p$%ps all over Qatar airways stadium.

  2. Slightly off topic! but I lost my keys on w/e and spent two days searching and stressing. Then a phone call from work... had I lost my keys. They were found in an office supplies car park and keys were traced back to my workplace. The demon lanyard and Angus Brayshaw key tag were described and manager knew keys were mine. Brilliant work again, Angus making something out of nothing.

  3. Melbourne's GF win had echoes in Carlton's come from behind sensation in 1970. Yet in round 1 1971 Carlton were comfortably between by North, who would finish 9th that year. Come round 1 next year we need to leave the memories to YouTube, I'm sure we will. Still,  every time we kick a big goal, or series of goals I'm the crowd will remind the boys of last year's heroics. I'm looking forward to that.

Yep I think Jaguar would be well pleased with our new flag and extra exposure. It may well fuel the image of well heeled and prosperous supporters but is that really so bad.

Is it a crime to have nice cars, be skilled in outdoor winter sports and have  a more sophisticated cheese palette?

No mergers or relocotions ever for this financially responsible club.

If it's an EV, and preferably with blade battery technology then is good.

  5. 2021 was the year we inverted the paradigm. 1961 marked the rise of Hawthorn, and the long-term demise of MFC. Percy Cerutty had the Hawks running through the sandhills down at Sorrento whilst the mighty Dees were about to end their long run of consecutive grand finals appearances. Norm Smith had earlier  vented at the admin. no doubt sewing the seeds of our later annus horribilis in 1965. Come 2021 we are connected, we are family and ready to, in Alistair Clarkson's words grab the silverware. Meanwhile the hawks repeat our folly in a messy menage a trois with Jeff, Alistair and Sam. Sorry if I have strayed off topic.

Imho, I reckon Dusty Martin played his best footy about five years ago. Not saying hes now a bad player but at 25 his stats and club votes indicate his best year.

So has Trac peaked at 25? Even if he has it's not to say he can't keep playing at the same level for for the next five years.

    Oliver is 24.

And we have a great deal of good players under 25.

Obviously it's not just age ...its also the number of games but all things being equal is 25 the consensus for a players best year?

Should we be looking for another young tall forward?

Is DM  a one-trick pony? Just asking.

  7. Not sure if this topic already covered, but it was a heart-warming experience. I was in my local Warragul sports store the other day and was disgusted - but not surprised - to see all this merch from the big clubs but typically nothing for Melbourne. Went back a few days later to pick something up and told the sales guys I was disgusted there were lots of AFL jumpers but no Melbourne jumpers. His answer was that all Melbourne stuff was sold out.

absolutely. Jordan Lewis remarked that those actions, when you’re having a quiet game, make all the difference. If TMac doesn’t overpower Cordy, then no goal and the clock runs out for 3/4 time.

i think it was TMac who got a  crucial hand into the marking contest that set up Trac’s brilliant dribbler.

He killed the ball for the Trac. Perfect set-up.

1: Dillon: 85 injury-interrupted games in a very ordinary side in which he won regular Victorian selection.

2: Robertson: 228 games, great player but one dimensional, mark but no chase...

3:  Jarrah: the complete freakish footballer, but only 36 games...

Trent Rivers will be number one by the time he's finished.

He dominated with the Big V, just quietly.

Just bumping the thread to bring it back up the board and hope DL posters can enjoy listening to it on a relaxing Sunday. I listened whilst enjoying a coffee this morning and enjoyed the whole  30 minutes.  Thanks Demonland for bringing it to us.

Really enjoyed listening to Goodys journey from his Day 1 and building relationships with the players and with the club.

Great insights to the man and the coaching role.  Learnings. New ideas. Fulfillment.  His Mentors.  Team culture.  Leadership.  Ownership by the players.

Love the openness and more relaxed style in Goody’s conversation.   Obviously he’s feeling more content after season 2021 and is definitely in a “happy place”.

Love it that Goody recognised the pain and the raw emotions of the long suffering Dees supporters, and how the premiership has brought such happiness and joy to all Demon members and supporters.

Recruitment.  Goodys echoes what we hear about the MFC (JT) drafting philosophy.  High character and competitive nature … willing to compete every day.

Thank you Goody. Thank you MFC.

We are Proud to Belong.  Absolutely!!!

Love how the demon hierarchy and club weaponised 'the long suffering demons'. This became a strength for us this year.
