  1. I have met Glenn Lovett, Robbie Flower and Jim Stynes. Jim was thoughtful and took time to make conversation even though he was not well. That was in the Betty Cuthbert lounge. Glenn Lovett I met when I worked briefly at Monash uni library in Caulfield, he was limping.  The most interesting chat was with Robbie in his sports shop around Glen Waverley somewhere. I asked him why Gerard Healey kept, and he said for the money.

  2. GAME LOST AT THE SELECTION TABLE:

Instead of oiling the Jag the selection committee could be replaced with the following personnel:

In: Captain Obvious, Jack the Blind Miner, Guru Bob, Sam "you know it makes sense" Kekovich and anyone else who can select a forward line.

    BLITHLY OBLIVIOUS GOODWIN NO IDEA

Selection committee blocking out fugazi, aka common sense with Brown's non-selection. Too much self serving tripe at press conferences not to mention the Gawn/ Bradshaw podcast rubbish.

  4. Players first to the ball are being mauled by both umpires and opponents in the modern version of the game. Constant infringements by the tackler compared to the '73 version. Overhead marking so strong in those days, kicking to advantage not so much. Players follow the Kennedy rule: just boot the ball forward, so it's someone else's problem.

Usually we are on the same page 55 but not this time. Fritsch is very frustrating but is also our most productive forward.

Brown's biggest hurdle is that Max is spending around 30% of the game forward at the moment and we can't ever have both Gawn and Brown in the same forward line.

I am also not sure we need another big marking target. Our game plan is very structured for slow ball movement situations and we look to "narrow" the ground by going along the boundary. Because TMac and Jackson are so mobile, they are generally able to cover enough territory to get to the next contest in time if we win the first one. (Watch how often they are in one contest and we take a mark or get a free and then they are the long target the next time.) On the counter attack, Fritsch's mobility is much more valuable than Brown's marking.

Brown/Weideman would get more opportunities if we were willing to use the fat side of the ground, but this is taboo and our strategy would need to change to allow this. The reason we are so cautious is that we are concerned about getting opened up on the counter attack. The defensive running of the midfield and wingers, May and Lever and the cautious way we are moving the ball is why our defence is so strong.

We are playing 'lock-down' football precisely because we don't have a B. Brown to chime in with 3-4 goals each other week.

@JadedI agree with this, but what if Weid kicks 3 from 10 marks tomorrow and Brown is ordinary? Would Weid get the call up for you?

Depends who is given the FF role. Previously Weideman has been anointed as the Casey spearhead.

We are family friends with Jonothan Browns uncle (He and his partner live in Wodonga actually Dazzle) and the story goes he had a Collingwood contract worth massive dollars in front of him with pen in hand but couldn't stop thinking about what his grandfather would say.

Little bit of research shows his father played for Fitzroy (and also captained st pats on ballarat, stick to the green white and blue) but couldn't find much information on his grandfather, but I could have my wires crossed.

Next time I talk to dad (which is where the family friend connection is) I'll ask.

Edit: Spoke to Dad, said it's his cousin not uncle... But some relation. And said he had Eddie at one shoulder and Malthouse at the other with pen in hand. Quote goes "If you knew the dollar amount that was written on that contract I didn't sign you'd slap me, but I just couldn't get the picture of dad in a Fitzroy jumper out of my head"

I seem to recall Collingwood very into Nick Reiwoldt as well so maybe around the same time?

    Norm Brown?

When Caroline was growing up her father, the powerful and fearsome Ian "Octa" Wilson, was President of Richmond at a time when they were a very strong team and winning premierships (late 60s/early 70s) under Tommy Hafey.

She has always had excellent contacts in the footy world.  My only criticism of her is that I think she tends to overlook or downplay bad news stories concerning her beloved Tigers.

In that case what about the AFL.com.au. They regulate the competition then deploy their website to speculate on what lower-team lists and players can be raided by the power clubs. All in a day's work.

How about supporting the club?? Access to finals tickets?? There's plenty of reasons.

Access to a (potential) GF ticket must be the incentive to boost membership.

In some ways the way that he brought himself back after his disappointing 1st year with us raises my opinion of him. He was absolutely smashed in the media, he took his lumps and came back the best version of himself.

I have a sinking feeling he might miss the AA team but he’ll surely be in the squad.

As a side note I don’t know what hierarchy they have going at the club but I really hope he would be next picked as captain should Max and Jack be unavailable.

So he gets in the AA, or doesn't. Exactly who does the AA team play anyway, and would Simon Ggoodwin and Choco release him to play a midweek fixture v New Zealand anyway.

    Oath.

    I couldn't believe BT.

I've never like his commentary but yesterday was an all time low.

    It was a disgrace.

Don't let it bother you. Any way to dampen expectations is more than welcome, IMO. BT is tongue in cheek. Let the results speak for themselves.

Who cares what BT thinks leever. He's a boofhead.

Keep it up, BT he's lowering expectations beautifully which is exactly what the mighty Dees need at this stage of the race. Same as the guy on Fox who said "We've done nothing yet"

One of my huge  bugbears in umpiring is when a player who has the ball gets incorrectly tackled or buried under a pile gets pinged for holding the ball.

IMO the prime umping duty of care should be to encourage the player to get the ball, and protect him, and ONLY if correctly tackled AND doesn't correctly dispose should he be penalised.

All too often we see one ridden into the ground under 3 or 4 players and unable to get rid of it - HTB!!!  Even though he has been the subject of "in the back" and often "high tackle / around the neck"!  This only encourages the vultures of the game, and discourages the brave ball getter.

Also, milking a free by gripping the player's hand so he can't get rid of it. Sometimes dangerous and not in the spirit of the code. What year did this abysmal practice start?
