Amazing how these trade 'gurus' make up trades.

No-one has come up with a realistic trade for Jackson.  They talk of this or that player and late first round pick(s) which is nothing like his worth, not that we will get his true worth.  So unrealistic!  Their Jackson values are just not comparable to the other trades they happily propose, like:

    • Rankine to the Crows for their first pick #5 plus a 2nd round/third round pick.  They base that on the Cera trade.
    • a good 1st round pick plus a player for Grundy and his salary.

They are blind to the imbalance of those trades vs Jackson...because they don't have a clue how the Jackson deal will get done.  Lots of salt grains needed when hearing trades options for Jackson.

I've heard several times the going rate for Rankine is two first rounders.  Jackson is worth much more than that and I can't see Freo especially being able to make it happen.  It's going to be a very intriging October and November.

  2. Everything I've read and heard in the last few days says that Melbourne are the premiership favourites, followed by Brisbane.  I'm not sure why people are dropping off Adelaide though, because Erin Philips seems to be the only star players no longer there.

Yes we have many supporters and thankfully are not all like you.  Most thinking fans will not harbour a grudge to  Dogga if he contributes to a second flag.

While I can't completely understand Luke's real logic of moving now (2 years later at least  has many advantages career and life wise) I don't have all the facts and mind of a 20 year old and if he leaves all the best to him.

I am equally as sure our excellent FD directors will make good decisions in compensating us in the trade negotiations.

But to publicly turn against and boo a young star that helped us make history in his developmental years is harsh and churlish.  We should applaud him as a Demon legend who helped change our Club becoming better.

I am not "naive" enough to believe that is all that will happen and no doubt that some good natured or worse banter will be directed at LJ from our fans.

"Good luck" in your attempt to stir up angst but our trade result is up to us and no reflection on Dogga or reason for him to be cast as a completely bad villain in this scenario.

Lol.  Where did I say I would boo?  I’m not trying to stir up angst.  Someone asked if people thought Melbourne fans would boo.  I wouldn’t but there are many different types of Melbourne supporters out there.  The two biggest bullies in my year level at school were Melbourne supporters.  They aren’t all like you and they aren’t all like me.  If we can’t manage a good deal (it is a negotiation after all) some people will vent their disappointment by booing him.  Not all Melbourne supporters are angels.

In 2011 $cully stayed away from the ball. It was blatant and disgraceful

Both he and the MFC were guilty

We were such a rubbish organization, nobody wanted to come near us. Does not excuse flat out lying….

But nobody cares, he was a very average player. He could run…

Did the culture of the AFL give him any alternative to lying?  And what did the burden of scrutiny and secrecy do to his mental health and how did that affect him on field?

I have similar sympathy for Tom Scully as @Slartibartfast.  When was the last time a young player said in season he was leaving?  What did you want him to say when he was filmed in Sydney? I don't think "no comment" would have satisfied. I have my doubts that the dying Jim was ready to hear "your club is f**ked, I'm going to GWS".

The mature 2022 Demons have shielded LJ and have said "let's give him time, he can decide at the end of the season". The broken 2011 Demons left Scully out to dry as the media hounded him for a public answer.

Scully made a sound decision and was put in an unenviable position.

Yeah, it was a very difficult situation for him, mainly because player movement announcments are so taboo in the AFL.  I don't think I want the AFL to go quite as far as the NRL do with announcing player movement so far out, but I do hope we can mature a little in this space.  Just like turfing the centre bounce, I really don't think it will be as impactful to the industry as some supporters think.

Absolute rubbish Its not Dogga's  fault who we recruit.  We may only get draft picks and not trade players as well.

Give Melb fans more credit we are better than that.

How naive are you?  We have 65,000+ members plus many, many other non-member supporters.  You are kidding yourself if you think all of them are wonderful people that will harbour nothing but goodwill to departed players, especially if we don't get a good trade.

    Opinions on 'protocol' please.

Should supporters boo a player at age 22 when he returns to play your team, after he has helped land 2 premierships and chooses to go and be employed elsewhere?

I think the determining factor for people who go the boo will be whether they feel we are fairly compensated.

I've been posting about this all week, probably ad nauseum.

It's not unfair. Unless we do a 34-game season where everyone plays everyone else home and away, every single model that is proposed is unfair. Even a 17-game season is unfair - some will get, say, Fremantle in Perth, others will get them at their home ground.

The 17-5 idea that gets bandied around creates different problems. Do we really want the last five weeks to be full of meaningless low-quality games involving the bottom 6 playing each other? Then there's tanking - why finish 6th after 17 games when you'll cop the five sides above you again when you could finish 7th and cop the five sides below you instead?

It's a bad idea for varying reasons.

The AFL tries to get it right by making good sides from one year play each other more often than not the next year. The obviously problem is that they don't have a crystal ball and so don't know what will happen the following year. For us, we were given Collingwood and Fremantle and they got much better.

It's wrong to complain about Geelong getting North and West Coast twice. But it's right to point out that their fixture has ended up being easier than ours. So too Sydney and Richmond. Particularly in the second half of the season. So when you hear someone in the media say "Melbourne have only just been going in the second half of the year", or you see one of those "from Round 15" ladders, remember that as the fixture turned out, we had a much tougher second half of the season than everyone else.

I think you're trying to say it is unfair but nothing can be done about it?

I don't see any easy fix for the fixture, but I just wish it was acknowledged and taken into account by the footy world when looking back in hindsight and assessing how good a teams season was.

Carlton's season is getting viewed by many as a failure but if they didn't have to play any finalists twice like Richmond, perhaps they easily make the 8.  Ditto for St Kilda.

Because of the inherent flaws in the fixture, I hope the industry continues to make very little fanfare about the minor premiership.  The way the cookie crumbled this year, Geelong winning it means very little, despite how much their coach wants it to be acknowledged.

  9. Langdon and Kozzy must have been close.

Gawn surely has to get jacket number 6 and Oliver and Trac are locks.

Seems to be a lot of good defenders around at the moment so not sure if May or Brayshaw make it or not.

I think Frittata is a good chance as long as they don’t pick an unbalanced side with too many key/big forwards or too many midfielders as forwards.

Do the double ups really matter that much?

There is the odd anomaly like Collingwood getting into the top 4 on a very easy draw on the back of finishing 17th last year.  That could have been us in 2020 after finishing 17th in 2019, except that a covid riddled 2020 messed it for us when we just missed the eight.

The cream still rises to the top.  And we are second top.

It matters to teams like St Kilda and Carlton who would have loved some finals reward and experience but missed out to Richmond who didn't play any finalists twice.
