Welcome to Demonland: James Jordon
In that case, itâs worth repeating what I just wrote about Jordon elsewhere:- âIncidentally, James Jordon played for Oakleigh, the losers in that TAC Cup Grand Final and his first quarter was worth watching. It was obvious at the time from his low jumper number that he wasnât a regular in the team (we know now that he played only seven games for them during the season due to school commitments). He appeared to run out of steam after his early burst but, on reflection, I should have taken more notice of him. He hasnât had the development or the fitness base of the more heralded regulars at TAC Cup or other state under age levels but I suspect that the selectors were on to something with Jordon and that, with development, he might well rush past so me of the blokes who are getting the accolades for first r ound draft selection. Heâs also played country football for Yarrawonga - they make them tough there (well they used to based on a game I witnessed in the 80s). That he played for them speaks volumes to me. Heâs still just 17. You know what I mean?â I hope those Hawthorn recruiters end up with some ? on their faces. Thereâs every chance Jordon will continue growing for another year or two and end up one of those prototype modern midfielders at some stage in the future. Iâd like to see that.

The pre-season supplemental selection period
I think it would be worthwhile getting some clarity about the rule. As I understand it, a player must have previously nominated for the draft or retired, delisted himself or was delisted and spent a year out of the AFL. Itâs not clear to me whether a player who nominated for the first time in this yearâs draft would therefore be eligible. It makes a difference because, if say, one of our ruckmen gets injured before 15 March, could we rookie a ruckman from this yearâs under 18 crop who didnât get drafted?

THE 2018 AFL NATIONAL DRAFT
I think Bedford might surprise a few. I watched him in the TAC Cup Grand Final and I wasnât that greatly impressed although he showed that he clearly has some tricks, particularly in running down opponents and aggression at the football. However, I had him pegged as a late draft pick or even rookie selection because he took a long time to get going and then, he also faded out late in the game when the opposition made a late charge to steal the flag. I think thereâs a bit of a question mark on his endurance which Iâm sure that a couple of preseasons at the club will iron out of him. Later, I also watched his game for Vic Country against WA and thought he was his teamâs best in the first half and though not as effective in the second half, still finished in the best two or three in a losing team (best was Sam Walsh, the other who I thought was on even terms with Bedford was Ely Smith so both others were first rounders. I rated him better than Ned McHenry who was a bolter and picked up early as well). That performance included some extra tricks like a nifty side-step and some clever use of the ball by hand and foot lifted him up in my estimation. I would think the clubâs decision not to rookie him was vindicated. They expected to draft him, probably told him so unless there was an unrealistically low bid and followed through with their promise. I have no issues at all with that. Incidentally, James Jordon played for Oakleigh, the losers in that TAC Cup Grand Final and his first quarter was worth watching. THE 2018 AFL NATIONAL DRAFT
I wouldnât be surprised if one or both of Declan Keilty and Harry Petty are tried as key position forwards next year. Keilty has played there before at Casey while Petty played both key defence and key forward in his Under 18 year in SA.

Anyone know anything about him?- THE 2018 AFL NATIONAL DRAFT
True - the AFL site kept changing the numbers as teams did their bidding. Finally caught up on the next round and hopefully, all fixed now.- 2018 NAB AFL PRE-SEASON DRAFT AND NAB AFL ROOKIE DRAFT
The PSD starts at 5.00pm today and should be over before it's over. The Rookie Draft will follow soon thereafter with the interest from us coming from whether we select Casey Demon Jay Lockhart. The order of both drafts is in reverse order to where teams finished, so we're at #15 in the Rookie Draft. If we decided to stick with a 39 man primary list we could either take one or two rookies or wait out to take another player in the pre-season supplemental selection period. The current MFC lists:- Primary List 1. Oskar Baker 2. Toby Bedford 3. Angus Brayshaw 4. Bayley Fritsch 5. Sam Frost 6. Jeff Garlett 7. Max Gawn 8. Mitch Hannan 9. James Harmes 10. Bet? $100.00 to favourite charity.- Welcome to Demonland Toby Bedford
Either way, heâs a Demon. I watched a replay of the Vic Country v WA Under 18 Championship game and he was in the three best players for the Country boys, the best being Sam Walsh who went #1. Iâm astonished that nobody put in a bid for him.- Welcome to Demonland Toby Bedford
Iâm going early with this but if nobodyâs nominated him by now, heâs a Demon!- WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - AARON NIETSCHKE
We have Superman.- PICKS # 26 & 31 (formerly # 23 & 28)
Prefer a Sparrow to a Mosquito - less likely to buzz off like a Hogan.- PICKS # 26 & 31 (formerly # 23 & 28)
Of the remaining available draft picks Curtis Taylor sounds interesting but I donât see much love for him on the boards. Have I missed something?- Whoâs left?
As things stand, we have the fourth and ninth picks after they start proceedings:- END OF ROUND ONE 23 . West Coast ROUND TWO 24. Adelaide 25. Sydney 26. Melbourne 27. Gold Coast 28. Greater Western Sydney 29. West Coast 30. Western Bulldogs 31. Melbourne The three clubs ahead of us are non-Victorians. The Eagles could take Hill or Foley or maybe Stack. The Crows might be interested in Valente or McLennan. Not sure where Sydney would be looking. Perhaps they might go for a Victorian in Bytel. Thereâs still plenty of talent there for us with our two next selections. Also interesting was Knightmareâs views on OâHalloran - he didnât have him (or Hill) in his top 50 power rankings albeit, he was a bit vague as to the reason.- Whoâs left?
Apparently the AFL medical commission ruled out running the draft in only one session on health and safety grounds, taking into account the potential danger to Gillonâs vocal chords. Next yearâs Brownlow Medal count is going to be held over four evenings on consecutive Monday nights during the finals and players will be able to trade future votes.- Whoâs left?
It took more than two hours of drudgery to get through the first round thanks to the introduction of live trading of picks and the matching of bids. If they did the whole draft thing for another five or so rounds plus commercial breaks with clubs like Essendon and North always calling for extra time, they would finish in the wee early hours. I couldnât stand waiting that long to find out who we picked with #ninety something.- Whoâs left?
Despite what JT has stated, Bailey Williams would still be a chance. - WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - AARON NIETSCHKE
