Part 7: Jason Taylor - Visionary or Over-rated - 2019
seventyfour replied to Deespicable's topic in Melbourne Demons
Don't know how this draft doesn't get a 10/10!! All three played in a flag in their second season. Jackson was good enough to command two first round picks when he left Kozzy is 23 and already a top 5 small forward in the league Rivers is showing signs of being an A grade midfielder after 90 very good games in defence If we got to re-do our draft of the players drafted after Jackson, who would you have taken instead? And the same for Pickett and Rivers? Only Chad Warner stands out, otherwise I would make the same picks again. -
20 pressure acts and 5 tackles. That's in the top 7 players for both stats, top 3 for Melbourne. Draper had 6 and 1. I don't disagree that he didn't offer much offensively, but he definitely had a go.

We need to show some serious intent and pressure early in this one. Send a message that it won't be like last time. Sparrow, time to throw your weight around or get out. Kynan Brown is breathing down your neck. Hope it rains.

Billings is in as the sub. Don't love it but not sure what else we have.
-
Rivers into the midfield sacrifices some run and dash off half back. Neither Bowey nor Salem provide the speed, dare or penetrating kicking of Rivers. May and McDonald are likely to slow down even more next year, so surrounding them with some pace may prove to be important. Completely agree that we need to go after key backs but unfortunately that may need to be through the draft. There's not a lot of high-end KPD talent though.

Only 4 players on the injury list is ridiculous for this time of year. Unfortunately it's 2 of our best 5 players with one done for the year, but otherwise we are amazingly healthy.
-
Fremantle will bounce back. Not an easy task GWS still have enough talent to be a significant challenge Dogs are playing well Port are competitng for a top 8 spot and have an incredible midfield No-one has managed to beat Gold Coast at home Collingwood always find a way to beat us, even when they suck. Round 23 2017 anyone? Every game is winnable but we could just as easily go 0-6. I reckon we'd miss on percentage going 3-3.

How is the drainage on Optus Oval? It's raining, significantly, every day from Wednesday. Bowey looked short (which he is) on more than one occasion on Saturday. Fremantle play four forwards over 190cm, plus either Darcy or Jackson can be spending time there too. I wonder if we need Howes or Tomlinson.

Windsor with 83% TOG, Tholstrup 80%. That's both in the top half of our players last night. It's promising, for development, that we don't need to work on their tank to get them AFL ready. Windsor especially... already has a tank and the speed, add a bit of strength and he should become an incredible player.

56 hitouts to 12. Good to see our depth rucks are giving a nice audition for Gawn's spot... not
-
Same umpire who paid that horrible deliberate out of bounds and the throw against McDonald.
-
Are we tactically not trying to get hitouts? 34 to 8 yet we're only behind by 5 in clearances.
-
Drop Sparrow for Pup Brown.

Shame about the last 10 minutes, it ruined what was otherwise a really strong four quarter performance. Hate seeing JVR spend so much time in the ruck but not sure what else we can do. Sparrow really needs time at Casey, I'm not sure what he brings to the side at the moment. Seems to be spending time in the forward half but only had 2 tackles and can't hit the scoreboard?

Smith and Brayshaw wouldn't stop a 100 point loss to Freo and losing to West Coast. Our injury list this year has been very good. Injuries like Petracca's and Gawn's are unavoidable, they aren't soft tissue that you could blame on conditioning or overtraining. Injuries aren't to blame for our performance, nor should we be complaining about our injury list. We've been fortunate, we just haven't had the form, intent or depth of talent to compete for a top 4 spot.
-
Who is the sub though? Woewodin again I guess - but I feel sorry for the kid. He's got talent and I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if he wanted out, maybe even back to WA.
-
A loss at the selection table is the worst kind of loss, as it's an avoidable one. Let's hope that's not the case on Saturday, otherwise it adds to a long list with Goodwin.
-
I miss Luke Jackson :(

We haven't had a reason to play Fullarton yet but this is it. He had a full game in the ruck a few weeks ago and played well, then missed VFL this weekend being the carryover emergency. It's time. He cannot replace Max but it might just give us a different look.

Just when I started feeling hopeful, we lose Gawn. Damn. Don't mind this. Turner does play a bit like Joel Smith who was great in the sub role.

Love this chart, wish you could see more players. No Eagles is quite damning, shows where they're at... a lot of rumblings that the players have given up on Simmo and this would suggest it's true.
-
Can't believe we lost to Fremantle by 100 points... would be sitting comfortably about Collingwood and GWS right now if it was only a minor loss.
-
Looks like he's fit enough to go around next year.

Should we consider sending Oliver to tag Merrett?
