I think you’re right but worth pointing out that the Dogs are heavy favourites to land pick 4 and it’s been reported they are really keen on Watson (I’m guessing to compliment Cody Weightman in their top heavy forward line) With West Coast also reported to be almost set on taking Reid with pick 1, draft night could look something like: WC P1 - Reid GC P2 (Matched Bid) - Walters North P3 - Curtin North P4 (McKay compo) - McKercher? Hawks P5 - Duursma (reported as being very keen on him) Dogs P6 - Watson Melbourne P7 - Sanders? O’Sullivan? Caddy? Despite all the talk about GC P4 I actually think the McKay compo will be the biggest factor in shaping draft night
-
A fair outcome imo - North have a great young core and one of the best coaches of all time, anything more would have been overkill

Stuff drafting a kid, poach a key forward.

He has some shocking misses but gets so many opportunities that he usually makes up for it - I’d trade for him in a heartbeat Would love to see him play almost a similar role to TMac in 2021 - taking big grabs up on the wings and delivering to our forwards advantage -

Would love to nab him and play him in that “quarter back” role that N Daicos plays for the Pies -

We’re still implying that Sparrow was responsible for Petty’s injury are we? 🤦♂️ How about McKay not executing the tackle in the way he did or the AFL not scheduling us to play in Tassie at that woeful ground for the upteenth time

No new information about any targets or potential movements - just Ralphy’s list of players he suggests we go after ranked from ‘Hail Mary’ types like Oscar Allan and Harry McKay to more gettable options like Mabior Chol Honestly nothing that inspires any confidence of being able to lure across a star key forward - but then again what would Ralphy actually know about who the club might be talking to 🤷♂️ -
The 2023 Draft and Trade Targets Thread

The right call and suggests that Petty will remain forward next year In my opinion Tomlinson needs to start next year as the third tall and keep that position until one of Disco Turner or Jed Adams (or any potential recruits) force him out with consistent VFL form Having said that you would have thought that this was the obvious call this year when Petty was moved forward but the FD never seemed convinced by Tomlinson, despite our defence always looking solid with him in the side -
Has he got any plans tomorrow night? 👀

64 inside 50s for 123 for Brisbane 69 inside 50s for 53 for us Shows what a functioning forward line can do… albeit against a pretty leaky defence

Any link to a source on this one ElDiablo? If it was true - I’d be all for it. We’d have the cap space to pay for his contract for two more years (after the inevitable departing of a few players this year) and the key forward market has been bare for a few years now, so you’ve got to jump when one is available My only concern would be how much of our draft hand we would have to give up - as good as Lynch would be for us while we try to capitalise on our list over the next few years, I wouldn’t want to be giving up much if it meant we were not bringing in elite younger talent either through the draft of potentially FA If we were talking about an Aaron Naughton or Oscar Allan type it’s a different story as they’d have 10 years of footy ahead of them, but Lynch would likely have 3-4 at most Anyway, all hypothetical - will be very curious if there is any truth to it though! -
Appreciate the info GNF but wouldn’t North be better positioned should they receive compo from a McKay trade?
-
Would much rather play the Lions in a QF than a Prelim - but if we finish 4th and beat the Pies in a Prelim we’d have a dream Prelim scenario against one of Port, Swans or Saints (presuming Port lose to Lions at the Gabba) Although lose against the Pies and it’s Carlton or GWS/Doggies at the G and Lions at the Gabba A week one win huge in that scenario

No disrespect but why would we pay to have another club take him? Given he’s contracted we hold all the cards and, unlike the Pies last year, the club still sees the benefit of keeping the best back up ruckman in the game on the list (whereas the Pies wanted him gone) I’m sure the club would try to do what’s best for all parties, but I highly doubt we’re going to pay part of his salary without receiving something substantial back the other way, either a player or higher pick - especially when there would be multiple clubs who would throw their hat in the ring to get him
-
Thanks Nudge - while there are a few names in the genuine targets that I think would compliment us, there is a clear difference in the quality of player between them and the dreaming targets Any sense if any of those bigger names would be any more than a “just asking to ask” scenario? I’m also curious what the clubs intent for Petty is long term - although I’m guessing much would depend on future trades and which area of the ground we need more support in
-
This or a similar deal with the Swans for McLean would be best case scenario I reckon Despite the partnership with Gawn not working as intended this year, we could still come out winners in the Grundy trade if we land a promising young player out of it As much as I feel for Grundy on a human level, he’s a great asset for us to have either as a second ruck or as a trade piece

2023 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch
demoncat replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
You’d think they would have to throw in Port’s first rounder (currently 16) to make it worthwhile from our end - otherwise you’re right, it’s way overs and wouldn’t get us any closer to a deal for pick 1 as we’d need at least another first round pick to even remote West Coast -

Agree that it’s unlikely but is there a particular reason they wouldn’t deal with us specifically? -

Increasingly looking like we’d need to deal with North to stand a chance of getting Reid even if we had both Freo and Suns first round picks Curtin far too promising to slide to pick four or five, especially when North will be in dire need of defenders when McKay departs Not convinced they’re going to get a band 1 compo pick for McKay so they may have some interest in splitting 2 for multiple top 10 picks, but beginning to look like Reid may just be a bit too far out of reach unless we can do some serious wheeling and dealing -
They’re 100% a contender and clearly have the best form and profile right now What’s more is they’re playing a game style that will stand up to the pressure of finals football On that basis, they’re every chance to give the “can’t win it from outside the four” theory a real shake, particularly given the evenness of the comp this year But a month is a long time in football, and without finishing top four they’re every chance to play an interstate semi or prelim final, which will be tough for any side overcome Long story short - if they manage to win the flag from here, it would be one of the most impressive Premiership runs in history But we could just as well be sitting here in a month watching them flame out after an admittedly very impressive few months Time will tell
