It's funny. We spend all this money on getting to know the best teenagers in the country and Prendergast gets to pick two of them plus the first rookie (although he was training with the club so it is a bit of a wash). Not saying it is a bad thing, because I really like the way Neeld is putting his imprimatur on the club. But it is does make one think about return on investment...

14.1 Each AFL Club shall maintain minimum and maximum numbers of Players on their Lists. During the term, the maximum Primary List size shall be 38 and Veterans List size shall be 2. 14.2 The minimum number of Players on the Club’s Primary List and Veterans List combined shall be 38 Here is the rule from the LAST CBA so it isn't gospel but it would seem that scrapping the VL may mean allowing some teams with 40 players and some with 38... I don't like it. I say mandatory 40 for all.

But we won't be 'committing' to any rookie that is 'temporarily elevated' as they are not permanently on the list. Thus choosing said 'temporary elevated rookie' will not be derailed by an injury - they can be replaced. The aspect of what I was saying that may have confused you is the new requirement from the CBA that eliminates the Veterans List - thus making it necessary to elevate a rookie permanently to get to 40 players on the Primary List. This is confusing as hell I realise but it should be sorted out soon.

No doubt. But on-field leadership is the most important aspect of being a captain.

There are not too many Dees fans who are happy with the Bailey tenure. There are plenty of Dees fans who respect Bailey for the decisions he made. There are some who have 'no respect' for his coaching. And there are some that realise that one rarely has 'no respect' for anything. Because in the end... ...he did get respect.

It's never about performances in and of themselves. It's about how you act as a member of a team, but not only that - as the leader of the team. Green sulked, looked at his toes, complained to the umpire, changed completely when we were 10 goals up and when he was kicking goals, and him not performing is way down the list of the things I have an issue with. Junior never did those things - we were up, we were down - he gave the same every week, every minute; with his demeanour and his attitude and his commitment and, oddly enough, with his performances.
-
As with all 'blanket' statements - this isn't true. Frankly, the Bailey didn't equate to much more than draft expliotation but that is not to say that his coaching deserves no respect. Life is not black and white.

You have to be kidding me. He was an awful leader last season and just because he is the best option of bad option doesn't mean our dearth of leaders doesn't reappear. Green, Davey, Rivers, Sylvia, and the frontrunning Moloney - these are our defeatist leaders and coupled with their awful body language form a major reason we have such great problems with consistency and commitment.
-
BUMP & EDIT I have added a 'who besides Nicholson' question as two-thirds of the vote are for Nicho to either get the automatic 'temporary elevation' or the simply 40th position on our list. Assuming injuries occur or the 'temporary elevation' sticks around in 2012 I would like to see who we think will be the second in line. ATTENTION: To vote on the second question you must delete your first vote and revote in question 1.

A rookie can be elevated at the beginning of the season if you have one veteran. We elevated Newton but he wasn't on the list at the end of the season. Think of it as a temporary elevation. I don't know what the new CBA will have so this may be moot. However, the new CBA apparently says we should have 40 players - we have 39 so I assume that sometime in the next few weeks will be asked to place a rookie on the primary list before the start of the season.

There will be angst with me too. But I won't disagree with the decision. As I said when Green got the job - he was the best of adequate choices. If he still is, he still is. But it definitely is to the detriment of our on-field chances.
-
Please don't lump the captaincy of Junior in with Green - one was for more suited to the role than the other. Ling got the captaincy because he was the best leader they had and he became a flag-winning captain. Every captaincy should be considered 'short term' as it should be a year-to-year concept, as it is with Maxwell at Collingwood. He has to win it every year and he doesn't want it any other way. Just give it to best leader(s) over this pre-season.
-
I don't disagree, and I don't know what your point is. Short term captains can work. Green might work for one more year. Moloney might work for three years. Trengove might work right now. But that's the issue - it's a whole lot of might and not a lot of certainty... The best leader over the Pre-season of 2011-12, according to Neeld and co., should captain the club (with the possibility of shared captaincy).

Difficult to be on your 'last chance' with a two year contract...

Now hang on, I haven't seen confirmation that vets can't have half their pay outside the cap - only that the VL is to be scrapped. I think they will keep the 'veteran exception' without the list.

MFC list now if Neeld took the helm in 2008

Here we go again, wyl... Hindsight is the opiate of the masses. -
The CBA may force our hand if the AFL say "go to 40 players right now"... The Vets list is to be scrapped according to the new CBA.

It's done apparently. http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/127273/default.aspx One thing that caught my eye: Abolishment of the veterans' list, with primary lists extended from 38 to 40. This will mean the immediate elevation of Nicholson?

Too bad it was snowing that day... Bloody Junction Oval.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JAMES MAGNER

Can we fit Nicholson, Bate, Couch and Magner into the midfield? Or how many of those prospective mids can make it? We got 65 games from HWFUA, Gysberts, Davey, Batram, and Morton in 2011 and the last four are far from certaint starters for the midfield in 2012. That tells me there is 3 spots up for grabs in our midfield... (3 times 22 =66) Magner is a chance. -
Spencer in ruck before Clark please.

Welcome to pre-season.

There is an automatic elevation to start 2012, that is aside from Long Term Injuries. Who gets elevated? If Gawn is seriously injured I will alter the thread and add a poll minus the player (if there is a majority chosen) in the first poll. From what I have seen the battle is between Nicholson, Couch, Magner, and Evans with Lawrence being in the position of being the type of player we highly demand (small forward). Edit: Mitchell? It's Williams. Sorry my bad. 2nd question added.

I get where you are coming from but Martin has been a revelation in the ruck, Clark has been head hunted to be THE tall forward, and Sellar is ressurecting his career in the backline. I just don't see the flexibility with Clark after Neeld explicitly called him our "power forward" and with Sellar being a prospective backman - and backmen rarely switch into the ruck. Martin may be flexible but only as he was in 2011 - 2nd ruck who plays in the pocket while Jamar is rucking.
