I know! It is Freak however... For the 50th, but no means the last, time - The Father Son Bidding Day is BEFORE Trade Week. And you are behoven to the pick that you had to take. Clubs know we have committed to Viney - they will make us pay full price. So stop with the nonsense - we are using a first round pick on the kid.

Yes, Jamint Bentram would be perfect.

Yes, but a year in advance for the new clubs. I wouldn't allow that any longer, so if any binding contracts were attempted to be signed a year in advance they would be null and void. You can only sign a contract for a new club inside a month before you leave.

Captain and Leadership Group ... Nearest the Pin
rpfc replied to Range Rover's topic in Melbourne Demons
I can see Moloney, Grimes, and Trengove as the best leaders sharing a responsibility none deserve to have by themselves. That is counterintuitive to my last post to have Moloney in there but there is beauty in nuance. -
Yes, of course it does. But will it happen more? I don't know, but I am confident if players and agents are encouraged to do all the deals in the appropriate October then that will lessen the 'handshake' agreements. Anyway, all it takes to threaten the 'handshake economy' is for one of the parties to renege on that 'handshake deal.' And a handshake deal isn't worth the paper its printed on...

Ok, say you start by saying that we should be forgiving of well-meaning Dees supporters and then proceed to refer to the well-meaning Dees supporters who run this site as conspiratorial draconian communists...

Look, it's an interesting argument, and maybe AoB should bring a post or two over from the training report thread that points out his argument. I am of the belief that a Frawley game where he keeps a gorilla to one goal while getting 10 touches himself and no defensive rebounds is better than a 18 touch game with 4 defensive rebounds if we struggle to contain that gorilla forward. And I realise that the premise is reliant on Sellar being able to contain that gorilla, but that premise has little bedrock beneath it. Personally, the more pressing issue for me is finding a small defender who can compete well and kick well. Seems to be either or at the moment...

To an extent, but the US sports with a defined period for FA seems to work pretty well, they wait to sign their contracts until then and planning is done very quickly after that. And yes, the 'big market teams' can be very attractive but we have a hard salary cap that, like the NFL, means many different teams get to the biggest day of the season. Really, the only way Collingwood and co. will 'game' the system is if there are promises of cash outside of footy or after their careers, and I believe, with the way the cap is working, that the belief the bigger teams will 'game' the system to be a myth born out of fear of the unknown.

I'm not sure what 'money talks' means in this instance. Contracts cannot be signed until October, in fact, we could say contracts can't be given until the appropriate October. Any club breaching the rule will be punished through the draft. There are ways to do this without getting into the farcical place of having players agreeing to go to clubs, and announcing it, 12 months ahead of time. It doesn't work in the NRL - as seen with Manly/Bulldogs last year and it won't work in the AFL.

Garry Lyon's six-month rescue mission over
rpfc replied to Brayshaws' Helmet's topic in Melbourne Demons
We do know that Leoncelli leaving left a hole that Jim attmepted to fill but couldn't. The board knew very little of the grievances of the FD/players which led to a naive McLardy asking a pre-pubescent Green of his thoughts, and in his role as the tail in this approaching metaphor, attempted to wag the dog. Jim should never have agreed to step in for Leoncelli, the Football Director is the conduit between the board and reality. And reality is important to realise. -
But that's not really aiding the issue that nutbean is outlining. Clubs should be able to calibrate their Drafting and Trading ideas after the FA signings and before the draft. It's not a long process and the FA signings week/fortnight/month will be apart of their plans for draft/delistings etc. anyway. Just make it illegal to 'sign' anyone before that October and the rest is speculation without foundation.

But would he have stopped that mess? Because if he didn't then he would have been a part of the ills of the club. The narrative wouldn't be the same. And would the conclusion to the story be what it is today - a rather successful consultation? These are all 'unknown unkowns' as a poor excuse for a human being once said, but they do make one think... I do agree that he should be more involved in the club, considering the clout he seems to have, but maybe we are better off for his recalcitrance, as you imply - that at least he knows he isn't fit to do more. -
Where'd you hear that?

The way to move past this is to get used to players waiting until October to sign contracts in the FA Fortnight or whatever they want to call it. I don't want players to announce with a year to go - they should simply wait and not sign for anyone until this FA Fortnight. The AFL can step in and say there are no binding agreements that can be signed until that October. It would annoy many fans who want to see their heroes sign up early but that is how I see the remedy. People will speculate on players leaving but there won't be able to until that October. Take away the ability to sign with anyone.

You may be right, however... Moloney wasn't the model of consistency in 2012 despite his finish in the Bluey and the Brownlow. Averaging 9 touches less in losses to wins (28 in wins 19 in losses - Footywire), in 2010 it was 5 touches less in losses. Jones averages half a possession less in losses, in both years. That isn't to say he isn't the best candidate, but the waters are muddy when it comes to Moloney, just like every other candidate... All roads lead to joint captaincy according to rpfc's eyes. -
It's the money we won't get by not having a sponsor between October and March that's a problem. We obviously don't have one and that is fine, I hope we get it done soon. But the allusions by some on here to timing of the announcement just makes me roll my eyes - Chinese New Year, the Tennis, the release of the latest Mass Effect game... And can we put this to rest - the Demon Shop will know we have a sponsor the same day that Twitter does.

Garry Lyon's six-month rescue mission over
rpfc replied to Brayshaws' Helmet's topic in Melbourne Demons
As I have said - we all need our heroes WYL. I am simply saying that some of the credit we give is overblown and you get involved in that as many of us on here do. I don't have an issue with it, but I can see why people do, when we see the great things that have been done and give credit to one individual. That is all. -

Well, just off the top of my head: From the Leadereship Crisis Thread... Lutz said "The crisis was 5+ years ago, but not many realised... Not enough, anyway." WYL replied "Jimmy did thankfully." In three words you have implied that Jim Stynes has fixed, will soon fix, our on-field leadeership problems, that he is the panacea to all our woes. That is a little over the top... -

I understand that some of us don't like the reverence in which Garry and Jim are held but everyone needs their heroes. If nothing else - we were in a great deal of trouble and needed a leader to get those to the club (Foundation Heroes, members, board members, personnel, etc) who, collectively, could save the club. Jim did that and he is revered because of it. -
I think it is because of the seductive repercussions ie. Frawley being more attacking, Frawley going forward.

Welcome to the new world under FA, more contracts will be signed in the designated 'FA fortnight or month' so players can maximise their earnings as they are entitled to do. You'll get used to it...
-
For this to happen Sellar would have to come in and be a better pure defender than Frawley right off the bat, McDonald would have to come in and do what Sellar was earmarked to do (whatver you believe that to be) right off the bat, and Neeld would have to be hit in the head - right off the middle of the bat. Not going to happen. (Although Freak's post did unsettle me...)

This is not 'known' and can only be guessed at due to the 25% rule that allows players not in the highest 25% paid will be allowed full FA after 8 years service. RFA eligible - Moloney UFA eligible - Green, Rivers, Jamar, Bate (RFA not in top 25%), Dunn (RFA not 25%) So there are a few players entering UFA at the end of 2012.

We were, at times, pathetic as a team in 2011 and form isn't leadership. Rivers being the case in point - his form wasn't bad, he was solid but his navel gazing and introverted onfield demeanour was pathetic to a young backline that needs more from him. Jones is the only one in my book that gets a pass mark from the LG. Moloney was a frontrunner, Davey petulant, Green and Rivers navel gazing ghosts and Grimes simply a ghost. And they are still the ones front and centre from what I can tell - and until I see the players I mentioned replaced by better options I maintain the view that we have a onfield leadership akin to PA and GC, barely above GWS, and years behind any other team.
