  1. These changes are fine, from this we can draw a few conclusions; we want midfield production from a goer in JJ, and smarts and more box to box running from 50 to 50 in Spargo, the Tomlinson pick is for the resting ruck.

They are very safe picks for a club that has to win this game.

They are fine, and they will not be the reason we win or lose. How we erupt from defence when we turn it over will. How quickly we move it and whether we can get some looks in the corridor will. Whether we get it in the 50 quickly or delay and get bottled up will.

One exercise might be helpful as the masses on here are convincing themselves of our superiority - if we were to lose, why would that happen?

What I see; we may struggle to take advantage of periods of dominance if Fritsch or CP5 aren’t firing, we may be cut through with the Pies ball movement and because of high press they may get 4 great looks in a hurry, we might fall back into some bad habits around slow ball movement out of the backline and tied with losing stoppages it would just invite pressure…

Anyway, exploration of those scenarios would be helpful - because you will talk plenty about the reverse.

    Bump.

This isn’t instruction, it’s execution but it’s the kind of execution you get when it is seemingly meaningless what you do with the footy inside 50.

’Defence first, defence first’ should be a quiet reminder, not a slogan.

We essentially burnt our entries inside 50 last year to protect our mids and backs we were so banged up; long and to the pocket.

I really think we are still dealing with the impact of that hubris and contempt for the game; ‘we can’t get anything near to our best with fit VFL players instead of first timers so let’s try to game the system hanging on to leads and ruining the natural instinct of creativity and boldness going past centre.’

I don’t see it being sorted out in the next three weeks and it’s so disappointing - we are the best team in my view in 2/3 of the game - defence and ‘in dispute’ - but bottom 4 offensively…

When you are as good as him you don't need to.

As Gary Lineker recently said on his podcast “when I went to Barcelona I was chasing and tackling and the players stopped me at half time and said ‘what are you doing, you’re here to score goals.’ I said to myself ‘I’ll have a bit of that’ but when I came back to Spurs I had to do that nonsense again!”

That was damning and showed a real structural problem

May and Lever pushed high up the ground Hill or the other Coll fwds would sprint as soon as the Pies won possession and outnumber us in our D50. They had multiple players free on many occasions and they kicked straight.

We let them use the corridor and we were stagnant and refused to look inside. they showed vision where - a number of times - we had multiple players free in the middle but we stopped and then kicked long down the line. Absolutely to instruction.

We are out in straight sets again unless he changes something.

For 2 and a half quarters the corridor didn't exist to us. We looked like we were just sticking with the system and hoping things would change at some point. The moment we dared to take it on through the middle was when we had the most fortune scoring.

We needed to vary the entries into 50, even some quick and messy balls in at least hitting the deck in hard to defend situations would have been better than the same old slow long ball to stationary forwards approach.

I have found that with teams I coach - those that run and get into good positions and get ignored - they end up not bothering because why would you? Why would you do that extra running and effort only to get ignored?

Team sports, and the roles within, are about empathy and trust - in yourselves and in others. And we talk about being ‘defence first’ too much - to the point where we do not trust ourselves to kick it to where we might advantage ourselves because it will also heighten the risk that it may disadvantage ourselves.

May needs to stop yelling and screaming at mistakes, Lever needs to play on at all occasions, McVee and Rivers need to be assisted to drive us forward, Goodwin needs to stop saying the D word and we need to get it quickly to our best forwards - who are good enough to get us a winning score.

    Still feeling incredibly flat.

Can't help but think this is the one that we'll look back as the one that got away. Such a completely different feeling to this time last year.

Was just hearing on SEN that Port are currently the walking wounded and if they beat the giants I feel like we could have gotten them at their most vulnerable.

Trying to stay positive but it's a challenge to be honest. Worried that this game has mentally sucked the life out of the players.

It is a wasted opportunity but the one glimmer and maybe it is for the Lions more than us but we are on the toughest side of the draw and one of Melb, Carl, or Bris will win the GF by 8 goals (Dees by 4 goals).

Noticed that May was way up the ground for a lot of the night and we gave away a huge number of goals out the back.

We couldn't stop their ruin through the corridor and overlap handball. Structure was off

Grundy/ thommo for mine and Jordon or Woewodin

    Tmac and Laurie out

And i would rather see dirty ground balls than 50m bombs. We've learned nothing in 3 years

This high press does my head in; May and Lever won’t gamble on the counter by feet and hands but love gambling trying to get the footy 75 out.

I am becoming more concerned about how we are built out of a selfish defensive system.

"Bombing" comes about because sides are too slow moving the ball in transition after a turnover. The opposition gets all their players back in the defensive half, and then when the ball carrier looks up (often under pressure) all they see is a congested forward line with no space to lead into. Port Adelaide had the same problem last night.

Move the ball faster and the forward line will open up more.

Yeah, First Crack isolated the stilted and stifling play off half back where we went sideways and didn’t reward blokes that got free in the middle - culprits were the backs and the wingers.

This is not surprising and extremely disappointing that we seemingly didn’t use the last 6 weeks to learn new habits to win games at the risk of losing them.

And now we have enabled our own demise not looking to expose and be bold. We are tight and worried and that is not the definition of a flag winning team.

Can Goodwin release them? Is not this why you are on the bench like a soccer manager?

Because one manager I know used to yell at his Celtic team to “pass it [censored] FORWARD!”

It's not a Max issue to me. It is a Grundy issue, needing to diversify his offerings for the sake of the team - be these rucking, forwarding, supporting, clearing, spoiling, passing, receiving and distributing.

    Not a Max issue…

    Wow.

They both should be sharing the ruck and the sacrifice.

We have a Semi Final we have to win - we are without options - can Max step up and sacrifice for the team to get to a Prelim in Brisbane?

It’s a failed year if it doesn’t happen.

Only if he's used as a decoy or get out of jail long kick. Otherwise we're relying on his set shots which would be nerve wracking.

We must be in jail a lot the way we kick it down there…

But yes, preferably he is deep on slow plays and on the wing providing hands on quick plays.

The more I think about this - our forward line, the way we move the ball, I think we should refresh the assistant coaches especially if Yze is off to Richmond. We are so stale with the footy.

Max is the most dominant ruckman in the comp, why would you take this away?

Don’t ask me; ask the Footy Department. I didn’t want this trade and said as much at the time. They want to prolong Max’s career by making him progressively ruck less and become a fed who rucks. They shouldn’t have bothered.

But we have to work with what we have got in 2023 and Gawn being deep may be our best chance to kick a winning score.

The radical move is Max to the TMac position and Grundy to ruck. Carlton will be forced to defend against Max on the 50 allowing space to Fritsch. Make sure Chandler is at Max's feet to take the crumb or handball. Max should not kick unless he has to.

Mate, that is essentially what the FD wanted to do when they recruited Grundy last year. Max hasn’t shown the desire or ability to get it going.

Having said that - it’s what we should do.

  13. I think we need to play a bit of ‘AngeBall’ - what is the point of restricting sides to 60 points when we can’t get out of second gear to score enough to get 61 points.

Stop May from marking and going back and ‘having a look’ because he is ‘such a good kick’, get Lever to have the same rule as Frawley at Hawthorn - ‘if you kick it, you’re off’, and look for McVee and Rivers with hand offs at all times.

Blind turns allowed if there is no runner and kick to grass; Chandler, Pickett, Smith, and ANB will get there first.

I know Goodwin and Chaplin want to minimise turnovers - prefer not to lose, than try to win - but can we continue this year of experimenting and adapting and try to win?

One tactical change I think we need to make is to deliberately kick more torpedoes inside a crowded 50. Even a bad miss kick is better than a drop punt to Weitering.

Just go for the point. If we kicked a point for every entry inside 50 - we would have won by more than a goal.
