You also need the next wave of talent coming through.

Bringing in 1 kid in the top 30 and then topping up the rest with NQR's isn't smart list management at all.

Midfield and backline talent is completely bare. We've drained midfield depth with the loss of Jordon, Harmes and Dunstan.  Woewodin is the only midfield young talent coming through.

Had an opportunity to top up on some up and coming outside wingman and class through the draft and yet we continue to neglect this side of our list.

I'm not completely writing off our our strategy so far this trade period, but on face value it's confusing.

Lets not forget also that the last few years of list management decisions haven't been great either over the trade period.

    Completely bare??

That makes sense from an overs POV

    Pick 3 > 2,234

    Picks 6 & 11 (plus steak knives) > 3,080

However North would most likely have specific targets in mind with 2 & 3 already.

Also, from what i've read on here and from some scribes, 11 doesn't seem all that attractive in this draft yes?

    apologies to RPFC in advance

    Apology accepted.

See people - is that hard? Just apologise to me for your constant indiscretions and we are fine.

I know it doesn't work this way given the potential & hype surrounding Reid but it's a like for like points swap....

    1 >  3000

    6 & 11 > 3080

You should have stopped after “I know it doesn’t work this way”

The Dees will pay nothing of Grundy's salary going forward....thats all down to Collingwood and his new club.

MFC just playing for a better pick.thsn Sydney's opening gambit... that part is just part of the trade week game.

If we can’t get Sydney to oay a decent pick AND $650k - we may end up paying something of his salary

This is the problem with statistics - they mean nothing if you don't know what you're measuring and why/if it's important. The kicking efficiency stat is practically worthless, IMHO, because of what is measures and how it assumes all situations where you kick the ball are the same.

Kicking efficiency is just whether or not a kick finds a team mate or if the kick goes to a contest 40+ metres away. So James Harmes' diagonal kick from the stoppage to Fritsch inside 50 midway through the 3rd quarter of the 2021 GF is judged as being exactly the same as a 40m backwards to a contest between Spargo and Tom Lynch 10m from your own defensive goal. Both kicks = effective. Also a centering kick over your shoulder to the top of the square is only effective if you kicked the ball over 40m, even if you intended it and it is 100% the right kick to do - and a chip backwards to an open player 15m away in defence is effective.

If you look at the top 10 players in disposal efficiency (minimun 10 games) all of them are defenders. Same with the top 20, and 30, and 40 and 50 ...... THE TOP 50 PLAYERS IN DISPOSAL EFFICIENCY IN 2023 ARE ALL DEFENDERS!!!! What are the chances of the top 50 kicks in the league playing in the backline? It goes further .... of the top 100 in disposal efficiency, 95 of them are defenders. The exceptions were Jackson Macrae, Jaspa Fletcher, Matt Johnson, Sam Petrevski-Seton and Eddie Ford.

If you look at that, disposal efficiency is far more a function of where you player and the situation you play in than it is of your ability to kick the football.

I'd recommend this excellent article about kicking statistics if you want more information on what good kicking is and how bad kicking/disposal efficiency is as a statistic: How defining what makes a good kick in the AFL is always up for debate - ABC News

It’s also about game style - our mids are instructed (or they just prefer to) dump the ball long especially when entering the 50. The Pies are more methodical with their approach.

Ok don’t think it is entirely to be dismissed- it’s indicative; just have to find out about what.

That goes against how we play. Everyone is lauding the Pies for their “positive” football but in my reality they were the Steven Bradbury of the finals. I like our defensive mindset, it’s tough and uncompromising. I’m certainly in agreement that we need some outside polish and a key forward but I don’t see us making huge changes to a game plan that stacks up against the best. Now Jimmy Gadson my friend, I know you want to out Collingwood Collingwood next year but I just don’t see that happening. Put a fit Petty in there, get Turner to train forward over the preseason, Joel Smith to have an uninterrupted preseason, Fritsch to remain fit, McAdam to have the kind of preseason that has him cherry ripe. Add to that the hoped improvement of Woewodin, Howes and Laurie, a top 5 draft pick and boy oh boy is 24 going to be one sweet ride.

I know it is an adjustment. We would still have the press but it would give us better looks up forward to our best forwards Fritsch and Pickett in 1-1 situations that may allow us to keep CP5 in the middle longer, or more damaging when he does go forward.

Right now, we are defence first and defence last - all I am trying to do is question that ‘last’ bit and for us to lean into our future - McVee and Rivers - the exact same thing we did with Lever and May to win in 2021.

  9. I’m a no, but that’s not really against Jack - it’s more that I want to lean into a new focus on what I will call the McVee-Rivers Standard.

Strong counter-attacking HBs, wings, and outside mids who are bold, comfortable with handballing forward, have neat kicks, and provide ‘just in time’ defence - not ‘defence first.’

The difference being that when the ball is in dispute - they are looking to be positive, so that when we intercept - we are off, and when we don’t intercept -we push to block space and get to the corridor.

To me, Billings is a front runner.

Went along last night. A few notes:

    •    Melksham gave a fantastic tribute to Hibberd. Said Hibberd was a man who would always “find a way”, despite not looking like the quintessential AFL footballer. Whether that was on the field as a desperate defender, or when the energy among the boys was dwindling during wacky Wednesday celebrations, he would “always find a way”. This led to his nickname for Hibberd being “the human loophole.”

    •    Hibberd also gave a wonderful speech. He thanked Goody for convincing him to come to MFC as the best decision he’s made. Goody pitched him to come and help start our “new competitive culture”. Credited his father for never letting him get ahead of himself. Even when he kicked 10 goals in juniors, his dad said “what about the 2 points you missed, I would’ve kicked 12.” His dad refused to say Michael was a better player… Hibberd said it only took an all-Australian, premiership, and 197 AFL games to finally admit it.

    •    Mark Williams presented best young player awards to McVee and JVR. Choco said when we played Brisbane, Charlie Cameron came up to him before the game and said, “I suppose you’ll have McVee on me.” Highlighted how the competition was starting to take notice of McVee’s talents.

    •    During the video tribute for Ron Barassi, they had a great quote from Hassa Mann. It might have been shown in other Barassi tributes, as there are many, so others may have seen it. I’m paraphrasing here, but essentially Hassa said he remembers coming to the MFC as an 18-year-old, by which time Barassi was already a giant of the AFL (3 flags). They were running out onto the field one game when Barassi tapped him on the shoulder, looked him square in the eyes, and told him: “Don’t worry. I won’t let you down, son.” Talk about leadership! RIP Ron Barassi. Man amongst men.

Obviously, people can watch the speeches from the award winners, President and coach on the MFC website but a couple of notes:

    •    I agree with what Older Demon said re Goody. My impression after last night was that his position is one of leadership, not just coaching. He drives standards, culture, and creates the environment for players to become elite. I recall Roosy used to say he wanted to coach Melbourne for the leadership challenge as much as anything, and I can see this mindset in Goody. I also recall Peter Jackson saying Goody’s job interview for the succession plan was different from other candidates, who all talked about game plans, whereas Goody talked about culture, values, behaviours, and habits. To Jackson, that was like hearing Paul Roos speak, and that’s when he knew they had the right man – our 57-year drought-breaking premiership coach and a real leader of the club.

    •    I would also like to add that we are privileged to have Christian Petracca don the red and blue. Goody said he’s never met a player who wants to be great as much as Petracca. Trac thanked the club psychologist in his speech and spoke of his passion for performance mindset, always finding a way to get better. He has flaws in his game like all players, but he is elite in everything he does to prepare… from the mental to the physical to the work he puts in on his skills, even on days off. Our next captain imo. Pencil him in. Bloody legend.

    Go dees in 2024.

‘Petracca; next MFC Captain’ is in pen.

Would love to see him give it one more season, I think we'd be able to make something work.  This year has been a bit strange, not a fair test for Grundy/Gawn in my opinion.  Give it one more year fellas!

We didn’t play him ahead of Schache. In a final.

    Schache.

Got to be too much water that has now flowed under that bridge. The bridge is  now gone.

    Time to move on. If we get a pick in the 20s - great. 30s - sigh. 40s - Argh. 50s - ok, Brodie, you’re sticking around…

What’s with everyone’s hard-on for Stafford to get it in the neck?

I think there is a three pronged improvement for us next year; better forward talent, better ball movement, and better forward movement and structure.

The first one is trade period, the second one I hope is an FD as a collective mindset shift with hopefully mcQualter driving that, and the third is a forwards coach with a system and structure and discipline of movement and patterns.

I haven’t seen anything very impressive when I have been at games the last few years. Aside from Fritsch and Brown here and there, there is not much forward craft and structure on display.
