The positive is that we are not cellar dwellers. I remember when we only dreamt of making the 8.
It’s never as good or as bad as it seems.

Yes, I much prefer to being this type of ‘embarrassment of a club’…

Although I do hope those opposition supporters realise that when they call us chokers they are conceding we are better than them.

Hopefully we assume our rightful place above them soon enough…

  2. Like a few - this is tough to do Saturday after the Friday night but there are always plenty when you win 16 regular season games.

    Rivers has taken a leap.

Sparrow has continued his linear development.

McVee and JVR are in their second year of footy and are best 18 players. Not only is that healthy for the future, it’s actually needed from a salary cap POV.

Contest winning team - never out of games and always a chance. How great is it that we never get blown out - no team is safe against us (hence the choking references)

Last quarter dominance - fitness is back to where it was in 2021 and we were running over the top of the ground at the end of games.

Petracca is a beast that will make me rethink my ‘Oliver is the best player I have seen’ belief. He should just do what he wants during games - like Kate Hore - just go anywhere and do whatever but you have to be in the 50 for at least 40 minutes a game.

Top 4 for the 3rd year in a row. Im not sure I ever believed I’d see a Dee team do this.

Top 4 at the end of the H&A… just saying…

If port lose tonight we actually finished 6th…

  4. Bit sloppy at the back. But Gillard is so promising as a young tall back there. Once she realised she is in 2nd gear and jumps into 4th she will be amazing. Maddie Gay reminds me of a player who wore her number - G Lyon - put her anywhere and she will do what needs to get done - hope her hip isn’t too bad.

AB didn’t look great so that’s a welcome surprise that it could just be a week. The commentators need to be a bit more aware of the moment - I am watching this game for the jumper but mainly because of a handful of amazing talents of which Bannan is on the podium - a knee injury could be more damaging to the sport, let alone our fortunes in the season or the day - wax lyrical about that for a bit.

The sun is shining. It came out this morning.

Yeah, the sun came up. But it spraying it’s rays all over the place. So much wasted energy. And you just know that the Carlton Sun is going to pop up and just nail the solar panel…uh, yep, there it is, great…

We did win on Expected Sun tho.

There will always be changes of course, that’s the nature of footy. But we were/are obviously so close it’s crazy. Kick straighter, we win, it’s that simple and that close. I don’t understand how people can’t see this. That’s what makes it so frustrating. And yes, @rpfc, our back half turnover and transition to score has been elite all season. Statistically. It’s not really an opinion.

    I think there’s a bit of noise in that elite transition. Long bombs to shallow entries is a successful transition to an Inside 50 and the bloke at Chanpion Data puts down his binary answer. But whatever, I think I am going get what I want;

New Forwards coach, possibly new coach to replace Yze with ball movement mandate, Chaplin diminished or gone.

    New counterattack-focussed defence

Recruit a tall forward, a medium forward, and a small forward who are actual forwards.

Bring in wing competition with elite kicking skills

Bring in HBF in mould of McVee and Rivers To allow Rivers more into midfield

Bring in at least one elite kid into squad of 26, and allow more opportunities for Howes, Laurie, Turner, Adams, and Woewodin.

Look to Trade/Delist/allow to leave: Grundy, Harmes, Spargo, Hibberd, Melksham, Jordan, Brown, Dunstan, Tomlinson and TMac.

I don’t think the above is too radical for the failure of the last two years.

Our movement from defence is elite league standard. Our forward line was as disrupted by injury as 2019, and that’s saying something. Petty, JVR, Fritsch, Melk available and together all season (along with our best smalls - Koz, Chandler), and Clarry in the middle all season to free Tracc forward, and we win this year’s flag. That was never even close to happening, sadly. It’s that simple.

Is that what the stats say? How can you have that opinion? We move it sideways before corridor. We move it slow by foot as opposed to quick by hands.

You’re right about our disrupted forward personnel but I think changes are on the horizon.

We need a re-think on the type of player we are drafting/recruiting. McAdam seems to be a shift in that mindset.

Being combative is important and has kept us around the mark but the limitations on our playing group are overwhelming.

We are exposed for height between HBF & HFF, we lack elite ball users nor do we value them, our gameplan stifles opposition but hurts us even more. Development of players seems to have come to a screeching halt beyond Judd McVee who has been absolutely phenomenal - yes, he made a couple of errors but no more than our leaders/best players do weekly.

Our 3 best players, Clarry, Trac and Max have become almost ineffective. They get great stats but what the team gets from them is of far less value.

Its’s just so disappointing to be here again and I hope we can address the mental side of our game and double down on ball use

Quality of use but also how we use it - rebuild ourselves around McVee and Rivers and the way they bounce off the line and also want to counterattack.

Some are saying ‘new forwards coach’ but it’s more than that. Their used to be a ‘ball movement coach’ in the AFL a decade ago at the clubs that could afford that luxury but someone needs to own this for Goodwin; such talent across the lines (except one and we will get to that) but we play like Ross Lyon’s teams of years back when he had 6 stars and battlers everywhere else.

Forwards, my life for a forward, or where art thou actual forwards in their prime?

The forward line as a concept has been disrespected by this club entirely under Goodwin. The way we move the ball last year into the forward line was a protection racket for cooked mids and backs. We have repurposed players in there battling away. McAdam is a start, but we need to value their forward craft first, and then look at the extracurricular work they do up the ground or to free up mids in stoppages etc. We just can’t carry so many forwards that are repurposed mids, on their last legs, developing, or out of form.

We could/should have won for the last 2 weeks. Hindsight says injuries to Brayshaw, Petty and Melksham cost us.

You can pretend alot is wrong but the reality is fine margins decide finals and we were % off with personnel and % off with polish

I think that’s a trap. We are never going to be ‘out’ of a final with our personnel and their strength in the contest. But what is the point of that if you can’t maximise dominance in territory? Can’t maximise dominance in forward entries. The game is becoming more about doing well with the time that is given to you. And we are not built for that in how we move the ball from defence, and also who is there to maximise in the forward line.

Was good to see Tomlinson play well and have the ability to free up Lever and May.

Yea, the actual defence made the defence better… Maybe we can get the sherrins out and be positive with the footy next year. We have been so effing boring to watch this year. Really since half way through 2022 when we starting protecting our mids and backs by sacrificing our forward play.

Get some new assistant coaches around goody. We need to freshen things up because we’re as stale as last weeks bread.

Yeah, if I hear we are a ‘defence first’ team again, my eyeballs will be stuck looking inward.

We have shown very little dare and run and while our press is good and are defenders elite - if you don’t take advantage and you poke the pressure on yourself you let the opposition have a chance to bottle you and beat you.

New assistants around Goodwin. If Chaplin wants to stay he can but diminished unless he is comfortable augmenting our defensive philosophy into one built to counterattack, not just stifle.

  12. We have a forward line built around maximising our defence.

What is the point of having a Jaguar of a backline and Rolls Royce of a midfield if you have to almost sacrifice a third of the game (when you have the ball) to protect the Jag?

We leave ourselves open to good teams getting us on the break as our entries are shallow, to non-forwards, and/or delayed so in traffic.

If one of you brings up expected score without using a lamenting tone - I am going to unfollow - don’t tell me me ‘should have won’ and ‘not too much is wrong’.

    Just isn’t true.

  13. I don’t know what you’re so upset about; we won expected score again

    This time 85-66.

See all you at the Expected Prelim and our entry into Expected Grand Final.

We need to bring in some forwards. We have too many pretending to be good forwards in their prime.
