How the Demons Hope to Bounce Back
Over the weekend I watched our last two games against Brisbane last year. Aside from Petracca’s “broken leg” there were no obviously banged up players in my view. And Trac actually played well. The difference between the drubbing we handed them and the disappointment of the final seemed to be lack of dare. When we were desperate in the last few minutes we kicked two quick goals. Of course Lever’s brain fade and Kosi’s ill-discipline (two down the field frees for late tackles and a 50m penalty) didn’t help us. But it seemed to me that in the final we were going through the motions, thinking the game was ours any time we wanted it. Then all of a sudden, reality dawned on us, but too late. That’s mind-set, not fitness or injuries. Bath water, anyone?

Leadership and Stability
Zorko’s behaviour in several games last year was “uncaptainly”. Uncaptainish? It’s late… you know what I mean.

AFL Team Bumper Stickers
For many years I proudly displayed my sticker on my car in France. Of course no one knew what it was. We moved back to Australia and into a new apartment a couple of months ago and we’re gradually meeting neighbours. I got off to a good start with a young couple I met in the car park when I saw the Melbourne sticker on their car. The perfect ice-breaker.

There are hot cross buns at Coles, Easter eggs at Woolworths and Werridee teams on Demonland. Must be January.

From the vault
A couple of excellent kicks from Maloney too. My memory was full of those high up and under kicks he used to do from the centre clearances. But there were two great passes from him in that quarter.

For DubDee, Monbon (et al) ...
I was going to do a classic 18 and coach where their jumper number’s corresponding letter (1 = A, etc), when combined could be unscrambled to reveal the centre-half-forward’s wife’s favourite holiday destination. But maybe that would have been too simple. Obviously it was Monument Valley AZ USA.

Dees Highlights of 2022
Yeah, yeah, Naarm. (I’m learning to talk like an Aussie after being out of the country for 25 of the last 30 years.)

Training Ground?
Or this one from Leo Burnett, “When you reach for the stars you may not quite get one, but you won't come up with a handful of mud either.” Perhaps not as classy, but more realistic 😀

Jumper numbers for season 2023?
But are you sure that’s not just a stage you’re going through? Whether it is or isn’t, doesn’t faze me.😀

Garry Lyon fails to call out Antisemitism
Maybe a bit off topic, but I’ve always been confused by the AFL and media and the way they talk about players. Drawing attention to Sheezel’s heritage is just another unnecessary example and it’s not helping. They are trying to stamp out racism (hear hear) but continually draw attention to race. They have the indigenous round, and they champion our (wonderful) indigenous players as All-Stars. https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-news-2022-indigenous-allstars-vs-world-team-exhibition-game-plans-date-players-lance-franklin-selection/news-story/27548be066a0bd91e2fe78a983bf4b7f . Meanwhile the media ranks our 10 best indigenous players, https://www.zerohanger.com/marngrook-legends-ranking-the-10-best-indigenous-players-of-the-afl-era-84448/ They tell us our teams’ greatest indigenous player https://7news.com.au/sport/afl/celebrating-every-afl-teams-greatest-indigenous-player-of-all-time-as-australia-marks-national-reconciliation-week-c-7011990 When I was a kid, the media talked unnecessarily about Italian heritage: Barassi, Silvagni, Benetti and co. I’m an old guy and i am trying my best to be a good and fair person. Kosi isn’t an indigenous player to me. He’s a Melbourne player. Sheezel isn’t a Jewish player, he’s a North player. And for that matter, Clarry isn’t a redhead, he’s a champion Melbourne player. Does anyone understand where I’m coming from?

GAMEDAY: AFLW GRAND FINAL
Some commentator says the push was with the shoulder. I don’t remember the rule saying that the push had to be the hands. I’d have thought a push was a push.

Membership Packs 2023
I’m disappointed that I didn’t receive anything from the club in 2019, 20 and 21, despite automatic renewal of overseas membership each year. I’m not sure how other overseas members were treated.
