  1. This. I'd prefer to chew razor blades rather than gift pick 2 for Sandilands
  2. I'm with you DD, I was following the draft and celebrated when I heard Shuey's name being called out. He'll be a very good player but just as long as Strauss becomes a regular it won't hurt too much.
  3. There are others who should be involved in the poll, namely Morabito, Lucas and even Dustin Martin as someone else has already suggested in another thread. We need to enter the draft with our eyes wide open
  4. I seem to remember an interview with Watts and he said that the two of them are great mates and he was hoping Scully would join him at Melbourne.
  5. It's actually not a bad decision by the club, we're going to lose a fair amount of experience this year so it makes sense to keep soemone who provides the type of leadership we're desperately needing. It also gives the coaching staff another year to make an assesment on who will be the next captain. The only issue will be whether he can hold his spot throughout the whole season, next year we'll have alot of younger guys fighting for spots in the midfield (Blease, Scully, Strauss, Grimes, Morton, McKenzie and potentially Trengove as well) so it makes sense.
  6. Is it a serious question or are you just trying to make a point?
  7. Since Stevens there's only been a handful: Mahoney Porplyzia Mal Michael Welsh Martin Cousins Jurrah We've done surprising well over the last couple of years
  8. 1858, I agree with what you're saying, and I admit that my first couple of posts on this subject were flippant, so I apologise for that. I just believe that the people who cross the line with abuse are not the sort of people who will take a measured view on the topic. 'Trash talk' is not acceptable in all forms of professional sport. Tennis, Golf, swimming, track and field, billiards etc trash talk is frowned upon. It definitely was in my chosen sport and I competed at the national level in my younger days. My reference to hypocrisy was not directed at someone suffering depression. It was directed at the players who say it should stop and then you see them doing exactly what they're trying to stop on the field. What we're talking about here is a culture that dates back many generations, probably to the early days of football. The only way to change the culture of the sport is to start with the athletes themselves.

    Jamar

I don't agree with the 'get rid of him' thinking. This year he's really shown alot and would be very handy going forward, my preferance is to keep him but if he does want to go then we should adequate compensation. Obtaining ruckman who can instantly walk in and take over ruck duties are rare.

    Jamar

I've got a feeling that if this is true and Jamar wants to leave then we're all going to be a bit surprised with his value on the open market.
  11. "Tom....trust your feelings, I am your father, you know it to be true"
  12. I was thinking the same thing CB!!
  13. Loved watching him play, sure he frustrated me at times but the MFC was alot better having him in our team, especially at a time when we lacked any wow factor to attract fans Thanks Robo, hope you are successful in anything you decide to do from now on.
  14. Thanks mate for the backup. timD has some sad internet vendetta against me, it's actually quite hilarious reading his rants. back to the topic. 1858, you may misunderstand my point. Not for once do I condone anyone abusing another person, regardless of whether they are a player, umpire or spectator. I've already made the point that I don't do it. But it's a bit rich seeing players do it in every single match knowing that their actions influence their fans (let's face it, whether they want it or not they are role models) and then turn around and complain about the odd online comment. The reason why the AFL is trying to stamp out abuse towards umpires is because they know that fans will parrot this type of behaviour. If they want to get serious about stamping it out they need to lead from the front as a group and stop the trash talk on the field. You may think that's unreasonable, but you need to think about the issue not just from your own point of view. You're obviously well educated and intelligent, the problem mostly stems from those who haven't been as fortunate in terms of education.
  15. I'll tell you the hypocrisy of your argument (by the way I don't abuse players) and the one put forward by Robbo. Robbo is worried about a player hearing or reading negative comments which could contribute to depression, fair enough, seems reasonable. But let's look how the footballers themselves behave on the ground...the level of trash talk on the field makes anythign I've read on demonland look like an argument between two kindergarden kids. What they say to each other on the ground is far worse than what goes on around here, and the majority of footballers engage in the trash talk. So what's difference between whether they here it from one of their peers out on the ground or from a spectator? Personally I would have thought it would be worse from someone you considered to be an equal. So, in summary, if the footballers themselves can't control themselves with their trash talk how the hell do they expect the fans to when we see it on a weekly basis?
  16. Most people in life aren't on 6 figure incomes by the time they're in the early 20's with no tertiary education either.
  17. Great thread, and it's something we all have to understand the next time we're about to post a negative comment. In fact I think this should be extended to games as well, all supporters should be banned from making any negative comments about any player at all. Hell, let's stop barracking as well just in case we hurt the feelings of the opposition. Of course this also needs to apply to the media as well, all negative comments should be removed from any article. We just can't have the poor souls ego's tarnished in any way, shape or form.
  18. Short arms...
  19. If you have multiple f/s in the same year then the bidding sytem still works on the next pick available. For example, let's say Viney and Stretch are available in the same year and we have a first round pick of 12 and a 2nd round pick of 28. Let's say we think both are worth at least a 2nd round pick. Another club bids pick 10 for Viney, we then have to use our next pick on him, ie pick 12. Another club bids pick 11 for Stretch, we can still use our next available pick, which in this case would be pick 28. The only thing I'm unsure of is the implications of either trading for or away for picks. In other words if we trade away our 1st round pick are we screwed if another club bids an earlier 1st rounder?
  20. Absolutely, I was thinking of one of his episodes when I created that last post. The one where he manipulated the advertising execs into coming up with the marketing idea he wanted them produce. Great show, loved the trick/treat series as well, especially the bloddy card he uses. Cheeky bugger
  21. Change 'a lot' to 'almost 100%' and it would be a fairer assesment. Our society is pretty much based around marketing and advertising which preys on this characteristic of human nature. Almost everything we say and do has been predetermined from going shopping to buy the milk and veggies from the local Coles to going to the footy on the weekend.
  22. I'd keep Miller for depth reasons, and Pia of course
  23. My understanding that is you can't just nominate for the psd, you nominate for the Nov draft which makes you eligible for the psd. Jurrah was an exception because he was late with his application and the AFL gave him special permission to go into the psd because of his circumstances.
  24. No, I haven't see him live, just the footage everyone else has seen (froom the u18's and WAFL). I should probably qualify my statement on him, I don't think he'll be a dud, he obviously has alot of potential. I just think Lucas (and Trengove and Scully) will be better in the long run. What's my evidence to back it up? Well, nothing really. I'm not hung up over his kicking like many others, his kicking is fine, nothing wrong with it. Hard runners like that will always have the occasional floater and I'm sure he'll give good value to whoever picks him up. I just think that Trengove and Lucas will be better in the long term, but I don't have any hardcore evidence to back it up. At the end of the day I'm just a rank amateur on this issue. I base my judgements on what I see, but I don't have the expertise in being able to see future champions (loved that story about whispering jack finding a players years ago). I also don't have the time in going to matches all over the country to see the kids play. For example, before the psd draft last year I didn't even know that Jurrah was a potential draftee. I'd seen his name thrown about on bigfooty but that was it. In hindsight he was the obvious choice, but I didn't have that knowledge at my fingertips back then to predict the outcome.
