Every year there are rumours. Although the nature of the industry with players seeking better deals, clubs seeking improvement in lists via trading , agents seeking top dollar and footy media needing to break stories means that we have to put up with more talk more of the time.

There will always be players who move to chase dollars and success. Think of Wells and Alves back in the 70s. There have been plenty of footballers who have come to Melbourne despite our lack of success. You can name them. Perhaps it’s getting worse but in the main what’s got worse is the speculation, media beat-ups, and talk.  And with clubs always looking at trade opportunities it encourages the talk feast.

Even if we become a successful club, there will be talk about trading in and out of clubs. Look at the Hawks, GWS, Geelong etc.

Given all the rumours and talk, it is surprising that there is not more player movement. There is always a big move ie Lynch but generally the talk outweighs the actuality.

Sure success is a binding agent but most players make a considered judgement about their futures based on a range of factors. Is the club treating its players fairly? Is it a good place to be? Does the player think that he is getting a fair deal from the coach? Are there solid relationships between players, coaches and staff? Does the club have a good culture?

Anyway, we should take all the talk with a grain of salt. Not get complacent because there is always change, but also not get worked up about it.

the difference is i don't think we have heard rumours on our players.. apart from hogan, am i forgetting anyone? or maybe thats just cos we didnt have players of the level to be targeted?

Yeah look i must admit watching the BnF tonight, you couldnt find a more flat and unhappy looking bunch of blokes..

    Something doesn't feel right...

as they should be! maybe they finalised that they should be playing finals this year.. could also be that they realise that they won't go far with the current set-up and that time is wasting away..

Did you see who he had upfield to kick to?

I know he is quick, can break lines and is generally a neat kick. What impressed me yesterday was his one on one work. If we can get him he will be an automatic selection and will complement Salem nicely across half back. Could also go some way to solving our small defender problem as we often get torched by opposition small forwards.

admittedly i was a few beers in.. but i feel like i was trying to focus on his output.. oh well, who knows. i'm not against getting saad by any means, but just don't want to sign another player with average skills, if he's got em, great

    why 2 years.... just asking

One at most if any was my thinking

Have a look at LH's wonderful sticky on contracts.

We have lots of dying/dead wood to deal with

he fills a need and needs to feel wanted by the club to stick around.. not 3 years though. 2 is a compromise. we offer him 1, he leaves then we have to get some delisted chump from adelaide.. get my drift?

  5. i'll get shot down but don't care. way unnecessary from the media dept.. clearly just to show they are doing something or what? who signs off on this [censored]? bartlett was badmouthing the team ten days before and then this.. we lose tomorrow night (and god forbid next week) and this thread comes up like fire. of course i want my team to win and to see good quality behind the scenes [censored], but jesus... the teams we beat are nudda. keep winning dees. at this stage we are still in the 64th pit of hell.

Rubbish. His job is to coach the Melbourne Football Club. In this instance, he's protecting his player.

no [censored]! his protection isn't working. something stinks. if its not his job to talk about why one of our key players is playing dramatically reduced minutes, then why even bother attending press conferences?!

Wow. He showed big signs. Good to see he went into the ruck to relieve Max once we had the game out to 5-6 goal lead.

Sure he fumbled a few but he will get more confident. I think overall his agility and second efforts were excellent.  Great to see the excitement when he got his first goal.

i feel like the guys could've got around him waaaaay more than they did after that goal.. bit disappointing, but seems to be a thing that MFC isn't really great at (apart from the harley love-in last weekend).

  8. we don't win without weid.. also, as someone that hates to watch o-mac trot around half-assed normally. that was one of his most physical games. it was really good. if he can play to that level consistently, he can stay. still need more tackles from players. brayshaw a real worry. weid NEEDS to play rest of the season.

  9. he's gone from my fave player to a fella that just laughs having wacky haircuts.. clearly needs a change of scenery. its not working out at mfc ? would definitely give him up with a second rounder for a decent first/mid with footskills.

I'd take some of this with a grain of salt. Jennings says that our key problem is a 30 second fix that can be addressed through some positional changes. He also references changes to the way St Kilda played under Richardson. It is easy to point out issues and how to solve them from a position where you have no responsibility for the outcome.

exactly. i didn't see him solving any of the issues that we have now (and had when he was still around) so easily.. hmm.

    Post Game

    • Oliver is useless when he's not throwing it.
    • Oliver is a worse kick than Treloar.
    • CLAYTON LOLIVER!
    • Can always back in Oliver's skills.
    • Thank god we thrashed that pissweak football club.
    • Haven’t lost to them since Rance buried Watts skull into the turf.
    • Cotch will retire at the end of the year.
    • Jacks still sooking too much to the umps for my liking.
    • Melbourne are terrible.
    • A top team in form would beat us.
    • Melbourne are an absolute rabble of a football club, what a pathetic joke.
    • They need to be taken of life support.
    • The Dees to their credit threw the kitchen sink at us.
    • Balta is the heir to Alex Rance.
    • We played a lot better today but if that had been Geelong, Brissie, Suns or even Port we probably get smacked.

I was at the game when Rance did that to Watts.. could've ripped his head off. such a [censored]

I'm in two minds with Lockhart - yes I was screaming at the TV when he took forever to get rid of it and was pinged twice for HTB. On the flip side, I thought Joel Smith was heaps better this week with another run when many were calling for his head after last week. That said, if I was Goody I'd drop Lockhart for having a laugh about it with the opposition. That was just not on.

Vanders will be better for the run. I didn't think HIbbo and Rivers would do well in the same backline, as I see them as the same type of player; but I was pleasantly surprised. I reckon we need a second tall KPF at Sydney, and recall Preuss did well in that role last time up there (but is obviously not available). Hopefully Tom Mac clunking that mark and goaling in the last qtr will give him some belief. He tried his guts out all day.

     In: Bennell, Weid

    Out:  Lockhart, Somebody.

agree. not a huge fan of T-Mac, but he tried his guts out today and contested as much as he could. despite *insert the dreaded inside 50/'connection' reference here*

hibberd also tried really hard and the kid rivers was just unlucky a few times. still think he plays next week and happy to have them both in the backline as long as hibberd plays to the standard that he did today. rivers just needs to thicken up a bit. got pushed off the ball for an easy cats mark (guthrie?) in the goalsquare.
