  1. driving up a few hours to the game and looking forward to a kick on the people's first after a few beers and (hopefully) some straight kicking by the dees.. went up last year and it was a great win (Disco and Kolt both played great).

But Pickett 'is' the future of our current team. And the lad wasne there in March.

Instead it was the billings and hendo brigade.

    Fair difference that

very true, but it was more the way that rowell, anderson, etc, ripped the ball outta the guts and sprinted forward with trac and oliver grasping thin air. it more made me realise that our boys are no longer 'it'. the game has moved on.

  3. the sun's lightning speed vs our snail-in-treacle pace was so hard to watch.. out of the 5 losses at the beginning of the year, this one made me the most concerned about the future of the current team. no one stood up. it was horrid.

Id take a slightly different approach. We need to trade players to get draft capital and then use that draft capital to essentially pay for the gaps we have. Rebuilding from the draft is too costly and runs the risk of becoming the perennial mid table team. We need to identify talent from lists that are in need of getting back into the draft. Suns, Port, Sydney, GWS, Blues have talent and gettable based on various factors. You can forget targeting FA's as they wont come to us because we are not in the window. There are enough contracted players in those clubs that we should absolutely get around. 1-2 right now would be the difference between where we are and playing finals. 3 good choice trades would give us a crack at top 4 and 4 trades would put us back in contention. Now that doesn't happen in 1 year. Aim for some bold movies this off-season and follow up again in 2026 and we are back in it for 2027.

I'd be floating JVR and Rivers to WCE who are in dire need of replenishing their midfield (Tim Kelly and Yeo likely to retire this year) to support Reid and O.Allen who is likely to leave end of year. That is potentially a 2025 1st round and F1st pick in there. Id float Oliver to the Eagles and Bombers and see if they'd be willing to take his cap for a 2nd rounder. Geelong can GAGF - 2 firsts if they want Clarry.

Go hard at several players: Ben King (for [censored] and giggles and to get Pies to give up more); Butters (2 Firsts), Bergman (1st and 2nd). Id also look at Fletcher or Wilmont from Lions (throw some money at them to see if they bite), see if Milera from the Saints would love to work with Kozzy. Brown from GWS is 1st/2nd rounder. There are lots of options.

We just have to super super aggressive. For me the immediate priority is to get 2 established ball users- A half backer and an outside midfielder and displace one of Oliver, Viney or Trac from the midfield by trade THIS YEAR. Rinse and repeat next year for whatever role we need to top up - probably a KPD or KPF based on how Petty, Turner, Jeffo or settle into their respective positions.

said with more detail and reasoning than i could muster over the weekend. i agree, let's do it. rip that bandaid and get aggressive. we've had too many years of ****ness after the flag.

Rivers would get you a late first round pick in a weak draft so we'd instantly be worse off and then we'd double down and trade Spargo for a speculative third round pick and continue to be worse off. Do you even know how drafting and trading works because you ain't showing it.

I'm not against trading anyone but it has to make us better.

exactly. and with that late first round pick (and maybe a future first, or maybe even just with that late first) we could get someone that kicks the ball better in the same age demographic. are you not aware of how the AFL trading system works? no need to patronise me. we move on a player and hopefully get to replace that player (e.g. Rivers) with a player of the same basic skill level (and hopefully in our case, someone with added attributes/something our list is missing). Rivers streaming forward to bomb it to the opposition consistently is not helping us. much rather him in the backline and if he doesn't fit there anymore, move him on.

you are greatly overstating Spargo's skill/worth to our team. just because he can execute dinky short passes inside 50 does not mean much. its more of an indictment on the skills of the rest of our list. look at where he sticks up in the league. he is not an impressive player. again, move him on and get someone that has those skills (and hopefully kicks more goals). he is a small forward remember. he does not impact our attack enough. its not a new suggestion i am making here..

    What lack of connection?

We can connect. We can't kick straight.

you're unaware of the ongoing issue with the quality of our forward entries Adam? goalkicking is another issue (though definitely linked). however, the core issue is the way that it comes in. or more, comes in and then leaves (with haste!).

    trade Rivers and Spargo.

Rivers' up and under kicks epitomises the ongoing epidemic of our lack of connection and the fact that he does this consistently (not sure Oliver, Petracca and Viney have it in them at this point to change) and his part of the 2nd generation of players in the team (part of the young brigade from the granny), blows my mind. trade Rivers and replace him with someone mature and skilled by foot.

Spargo is just a weak link. in the hope that we could off load him and put some of his worth to get someone like Wade Derksen, i'd be stoked. we don't have room to have Spargo and Chandler both in the side and I'd rather Chandler.

  8. ahhh 2018.. i was living in Europe at the time (ooh la la), doing a uni exchange, and i remember watching games in the back of cabs and in summery backyards from amsterdam to athens.. watched the dreaded west coast loss at a little apartment on the island of samos (a greek island in the aegean sea, just off the coast of turkey). i don't actually recall watching this carlton game.. might put that down to being in amsterdam? damn melksham has been a servant hasn't he? 5 goals back then and 4 goals the other day..

casey second to the ball, kicking to contests where southport seemed to spoil with ease and then mop up and make us pay on transition. so freaking frustrating. the amount of players in our back half responsible for 2016-era T-Mac turnovers was horrific.

JVR made to look like trash, but at least he appeared to be putting in effort and at least trying to spoil at times (got the impression that he gave up attempting to mark). sad to see how Koltyn played..

didn't mind the look of Deakon Wright and also Blake Howes looked good at times.. other than that, no goooooooood

  10. I realise a lot of people have asked genuinely, but can anyway suggest what the new game plan that Goodwin keeps referring to is? i honestly cannot identify what the players are trying to do. they aren't taking risks, they seem to be doing the same thing, just slower and with worse footskills (if that is possible)..

the kickouts at the moment and mistakes in the D50 are particularly bad atm too and no one seems to be referring to those. perhaps that is a result of trying to avoid the boundary line upon exiting our D50?

Not sure if this got posted

    from the Age https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/pick-a-winner-who-your-team-will-target-in-the-afl-draft-20241021-p5kjy5.html

Melbourne may not place a bid on Essendon’s NGA prospect Isaac Kako after trading for the Bombers’ pick nine.

Midfielders Harvey Langford, Sid Draper and Josh Smillie could get through to their first selection,

while key forward Harry Armstrong, defenders Alix Tauru and Luke Trainor, and classy midfielder Xavier Lindsay might be in the mix at their second pick

I'll be sweating if we go Smilie at 5 & Armstrong at 9 (or vice versa). I just don't see it. Smilie is arrogant and lazy. Word is we might have a few players already like that :-/..

Would love it Jagga slips to 5 (hello general consistency & good delivery to our forward line!) and if we could nab Tauru or Travaglia at 9, I'd be stoked. Tauru looks a weapon (prob as a KPD) and Travaglia has speed, dare and sounds as though he is an upstanding citizen.

But, should they are all gone, Taj Hotton or Jobe Shanahan at 9.

@Demonland 7 players gone from this team, with Petracca *potentially* gone in the coming months and McDonald (& Melksham) gone at the end of 2025. 3 retirees (Brown, Hibberd, Brayshaw), 4 trades (Harmes, Jordan, ANB, Jackson). Question marks for me remain over Sparrow & Petty (potential trades back to S.A. in the coming years?). May & Gawn to retire in the next few years.. So much for a productive window. With not much left at Casey, I reckon we go to the Draft and try to get as many high picks as possible!

  13. from having a kick with him at the launch of the old 'new' MFC logo at yarra park, he was super nice and also had a great kick :-) in my years of players leaving (excluding gus), jesse has been the one the one that has been the most upsetting..

love how when he plays us he plays hard, but not dirty/mouthy too. respect.

I’d prefer they lure Brad Green across from wherever he is currently employed (Pies?).

i wonder who else we could get in.. all for getting ex-demons back into the fold. so long as they are keen to be progressive and have gained experience from other clubs in the AFL system.
