I think with Serong, a lot of people are missing that one of his strengths is his decision-making and ability to stay involved. I rate him higher than Young.

Don’t you want him to be dominant at that position though? I mean, Petracca played competently as a mid in juniors, but what has that translated to for us at AFL level so far? I’m also not sure about his athleticism for the wing; I’d want him to be able to run like Langdon and from what I understand his combine results were underwhelming.

I agree. I really like him. Like I said, I’d choose him over Young, unless the club truly think Young could become a decent permanent mid/wingman. I currently don’t.

I’ve said in the Gould thread that I’m gunshy based on memories of Tapscott... but I really like the look of him. If I was going to select a HBF with a top 10 pick, it’d be Gould for me over Young. The only curveball is if Young can switch into the midfield. He does seem to have a few similarities to Dyson Heppell.

I’m a bit the same. Would love to see what we can do with his x-factor in the side, but I don’t want to restrict our future ability to keep a solid list together by overpaying for unfulfilled potential.

Pretty much all of his highlights come against little to no resistance. It’s not his fault, but it makes him look better than he is. Also, a lot of his “exceptional” kicks will get picked off at the higher level. That’s not to say he’s not a good kick, but again, makes him look like he’ll have more impact than he really will. A solid AFL back flanker. I’d like more for pick 3.

My read: Not really a fan of Flanders. I think he’ll struggle to get to 50 AFL games. Just don’t see what is exceptional about him. Young good, but I think heavily overrated. Similar to a smaller Haynes if you’re lucky, but that’s best case scenario. Serong has smarts, but a bit slow & small. Kemp could be a Dangerfield or a Blake Acres, hard to gauge. Do you roll the dice on him? Stephens will be a gun wingman, if that’s what you are after. I’d like him and I’d take him at 3. Ash like Adam Saad. Handy, but not elite. Weightman will be similar to Jack Higgins or a modern-day Tiprat Milne at best. Fills a long term need for us. I’d stay away from talls. Too easy for them against little to no opposition. I’d happily bid on and take Green also. We might be a bit heavy in terms of contested inside mids, but it’s a good problem to have & you take the quality when it’s on offer.

Try as I might, I just can’t get excited about Young for pick 3. I’ll accept him if we do, but I hope we look elsewhere if we keep the pick.

Kemp and Stephens if at all possible I think. Although I think we’d have to settle for Kemp/Stephens and Weightman/Gould. Still a good return.

With all the academy selections next year, teams with these selections will need to trade for later picks as points. I say we take 6, the 1st rounder and a handful of later picks for next year, which we’ll be able to parlay into something of more substance.

With player managers involved, this would never be possible.

Well they can’t trade us players now. They also can’t trade players to others to get more picks for us. Therefore, the best we can really hope for is 6 plus GWS first round next year, plus their 2nd next year. But then I think there might be rules around trading future picks restricting this? Unless they managed to get a future 2nd from someone else during trade week, can’t recall.

Only problem with that is... you completely remove any incentive for GWS to do the deal in that case. We’d still need to “lose” somewhat, although getting a better return than face value.
