AFLW SEASON OPENS THIS WEEK
@rjay it should be on Kayo?

POSTGAME: Rd 23 vs Hawthorn
One of the worst 36 point losses I've ever seen. Could have been so much more than that.

Welcome to Demonland: Jai Culley
Maybe he just needed to pull on the jumper of his childhood club to feel the passion? In all seriousness though I think it's one of the biggest flaws with the AFL and pathway systems. It is all set up to try to unearth the next star, not collect the best 414 players in Australia (23 players per team each weekend). I think that AFL lists are probably the best 270 players in Australia, plus a bunch of journeymen and developing kids. It's possible that high percentage of players 271-750 are not on AFL lists, which means they don't get the fitness and conditioning and have no prospect of making it. If you aren't drafted at 18, you fall so far behind draftees in terms of development and conditioning that it is rare to make it later on. I'd love to see more invested in the 50-100 players who don't get drafted each year. Expand the rookie list. Let those kids play VFL or even the next level down if they aren't up to it and are just working on fitness. Similarly, expand the reserves list so that the VFL level comp (or officially the reserves) can be made up of the next best players in the country, where those players can be training full time for fitness and the standard of reserves is much higher. Surely playing against the best would fast track development of elite juniors?

Farewell Charlie Spargo
I think Charlie has the opportunity to extend his career with a reasonable length contract (longer than he'd get at Melbourne) as part of free agency. With a new coach coming in, and being a fringe player, you'd think he might explore options. Similarly, we might be ok with losing him for a 3rd round compo pick so we have points for Kalani White. I suspect it will be win win whatever agreement is reached. Charlie is a 4th generation AFL player. His dad Paul, played 90 games for Nth and Brisbane. His grandfather Bob played 80 including a losing grand final for Footscray. His great grandfather, Bob Snr played for 65 games for Footscray and 2 for Melbourne! Add to that his great uncle Ricky also played for Footscray. With Charlie now having over 100 games under his belt at the Dees, there is a chance there will be another Spargo running around in the future!

GAMEDAY: Rd 21 vs West Coast
Both little league matches in front of me are 5v4 with one side getting flogged. Red team has more players in one game and blue in the other. It's like watching our 666 debacle from last weekend all over again.

That's the Sullivan Line gone.

Can we talk about Kolt?
Just adding to this that Goodwin joined us in 2014 as the "senior assistant" anointed to take over from Roos, and thus would have had just as much input into 2014 and 2015...

Can we talk about Kolt?
I'm not worried about Kolt. Doesn't mean I think he'll make it, but I think it's too early and I still don't mind his selection: he's a high ceiling, low floor candidate. He was injured preseason, and deserves a bit of time to get fitness right and find his spot in the system before we write him off. He has had so many "maybe moments" where he has fumbled or spilt a mark or not been clean with his one touch. It's not what he showed in his under highlights, where he was clean with good hands and strong overhead for his size (I know they are cherry picked highlights). I don't know if that will translate to AFL level; maybe the extra speed and size and pressure means he is at his limit. But I still think he has attributes that will be valuable if he makes it, and for those reasons I am happy we are giving him a go. I do think he could use time at Casey to really get on top of the pace of the game but I'm not sure who comes in for him as a half forward. Billings? Sharp? Spargo? Are the only options. So I'm happy they are backing in a kid.

GAMEDAY: Rd 18 vs North Melbourne
Jeffersons lack of intensity has me doubting his likelihood of making it. But he has done a couple of nice "forward craft" things, including halving an aerial 3 on 1 contest, a couple of sheppards to free a team mate etc. so I do still have some hope.

PREGAME: Rd 18 vs North Melbourne
I agree with this in that I think Jeffo plays the same role as Fritsch, despite being taller. I think he needs two other talls (including relief ruck) so that he can drift around and do his thing, not battle their no. 1 forward. I do wonder if he could play the defensive aerial forward role on opposition interceptors; he does seem to do a good job of bringing the ball to ground to crumb.

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs Adelaide
I'd like to see us hold the ball and force a stoppage rather than take low probability options that result in turnovers from contested situations, including on the boundary line.

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs Adelaide
@jaydenh10 When he signed it was reportedly for less than $1 million per year. You're making stuff up. https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-news-2021-christian-petracca-contract-melbourne-free-agent-new-deal-net-worth-how-much-money

Time to go Goody?
I'm not privy to the details. I know a fixed percentage has been discussed, but I'm pointing out that is something that has been discussed after the initial reports which said "$7 million over 7 years". You'd think if it was a fixed percentage, they could have got the estimate right by saying. "10 million of 7 years" or something similar. Also if it was $1m in 2022 and a fixed percentage, then that would be $1.3m today and $1.36m in 2027 based on the actual size of the cap. Substantially less than the purported $1.7 million. Even if the cap hits $20 million in 2030, the last year of his contract, it would only be $1.47m. A lot of numbers are made up and add to hyperbole.

Time to go Goody?
Hey @Macca when Oliver was resigned in 2022 it was reported as a 7 year deal worth $7 million. No where near the numbers that are suddenly being thrown around now. afl.com.auDemon for life: Oliver signs MASSIVE contract extensionClayton Oliver has signed a new contract until the end of 2030

Welcome to Demonland: Molly O’Hehir
Not the result we were looking for but Molly named in the best in promising!

AFLW: GM of AFLW Marcus Wagner Departs
Clare Pettyfor was the Melbourne GM of Media and Communications in 2021 and 2022. She then moved to Collingwood as General Manager of Football Operations (men's program I believe), before returning to us as CCO (Chief Communications Officer) which was an executive level role. So while her technical background is mainly in comms she has experience in football programs and at executive level management.

Games Won Since 2000
If the metric is "how many games do you need to win to get at least one premiership?" then we are the most efficient!

Time to go Goody?
That's completely fair to hold that view, and it is reasonable to critique specific aspects of his performance (or what you consider his performance). But statements like "he was handed a list" undermine otherwise reasonable positions.

Time to go Goody?
Roos was only here for 1 season without Goodwin, who he selected as his senior assistant and successor and who joined the MFC in September 2014, before the trade period. Roos influenced precisely one trade/draft period without Goodwin's input.

KOZZY A DEMON FOR LIFE!!!
Salary cap in 2025 is $17.7 million. We have 44 players. The bottom 17 players are probably on about $150k each. That includes rookies and draftees and journeymen like Campbell. That leaves $15.1 million for the other 27 players. Oliver's contract was reported as $7 million over 7 years. Petraccas was "under a million per year". Kosi is now $1.4 million. So take those 3 out and we still have $11.8 million for the remaining 24 or $500k each. There will be a spread between $200k and up to a million for those remaining players. Plenty of cap space to play with.

Luke Jackson back to Victoria?
Nah, they started it when they took Jason Norrish.
