lol interesting that between that post and this 3 people have claimed to be in the 2 and only 1 in the 98? i like brad miller. i always have, and was one of his biggest advocates back in the day (when he could perform and looked promising). since then he has been abysmal. he has let himself down, and the club. he has all the right physical attributes. he has the maturity and the leadership. does he have the footballing skills and confidence? he hasnt the last few years. he has been terrible. he can't kick, his pack marking is questionable, and im not sure if he knows what decision making is. if he finds form, is utilised correctly and improves on key areass, he could be a valuable contributor. i think he should be placed closer to goals (and newton at CHF) so that his kicking is not as much of an issue. at best he could hold down a position and be a solid contributor. at worst i think he has value in a bits and parts tall who will succeed benny holland. if we had of got a decent offer for him i wouldve traded him in a heartbeat, but he has more value to us as a 24ish strong tall than a 17 yo small-midfielder picked up at pick 55 would.

demonscoast, it might be worth you doing a search for brad miller threads from towards the end of last season, and trade time. it will give you the general feeling of this site RE brad miller. there does seem to be two distinct camps on the issue however.

jaded, i think these are different issue. being drunk isnt illegal speeding is (disclaimer, being drunk on a licensed premises is illegal, and being drunk and disorderly is, so is drinking in many public places). therefore in the case of speeding johnson is responsible in the eyes of the law, but did not affect johnsons ability to play football. getting drunk affects his bodies ability to play football and is therefore a work related matter.

i spose its sorta like saying he punched a bloke, but only cause he was big and i thought he could take it...

well im happy that i will be able to continue wearing the number 16 on my back. hopefully frank gives me something to cheer about in the short term... for a young kid, thats a big number to take, a lot of people will have the 16 on their back...

interesting take on it. i see it as being drunk affects his ability to play footy letting down his club, his team mates and his employer. even though getting drunk is a legal past time it affects is ability to perform at work and thus should be sanctioned by the club. speeding is stupid. i cant condone 70km over on the roads. he has money, get a racing licence and burn it up at a track. go to the super nats or something, if thats your vice. HOWEVER, the issue is between steve, the police and the law. not the footy club. he didnt do anything that affects his ability to play. hell TAC employers get tickets all the time and don't get sanctioned at work. why should Steve Johnson? well it puts them out of the running for any available TAC sponsorship doesn't it? but if he was driving a ford it might have been good for business...

i too would like them to mix it up a little. BUT from the club point of view, mixing it up probably means reduced sales at the membership shop, as we dont have to buy a hat, scarf, tie beanie etc. so it works oth ways. appeasing the members, selling merchandise...

Melbournefc's approach to Conditioning
deanox replied to Spin-it-to-Goodwin-it's topic in Melbourne Demons
if i was trading for a player and had reason to believe there may be a med problem you would demand full inspection of records. actually if i was trading for a fully fit player i would demand inspection of their med records. and i would have my doctors go over each player as well. im sure that is what happens. and RE playing injured. there is a similar chance to a pro afl player carrying a niggling injury as there is an amature or lower level pro playing with an injury. ask people who have played vfl or ammos. or even other sports such as rugby. alot of these players carry stuff all season. if anything the afl players are in a better boat because they get the benefit of medico assistance, ie physio, massage, proper recover, modified training programs etc. they also dont have to front up to work mon-fri like the rest of us, but can spend their time doing appropriate rehab stuff and exercises to repair and prevent future problems. they get paid to keep their body in the best shape they can, they dont have to do it on their night off. -

and in a demonland first...newbie takes on rhino richards! -
quotable DD36. i like it a lot. it wouldnt surprise me if someone makes that their signature.

i think you have supported my argument to have him on a wing rather than in the backline. he is better when running forward and using his kicking skills to our advantage. he is not strong enough over head, or defensively to play in the backline. thus the 2 or 3 times a year he gets a full run in the middle tend to be the times when we see him play well, and hit blokes on the chest in the forward 50. let him run and kick, and outside version of moloney in some ways. make him compete for that position, but i agree he shouldnt be selected as a defender.
-
pick players with eladership qualities, not based on p[osition. if there is no official leader in the backline the coaching staff should pick a player they think could stand up and encourage him to start to lead, but if he isnt a leader yet he shouldnt be in the group. which defender do you guys have in mind anyway? carrol? the young (and injured all of last year) rivers? the injury prone wheelan? bartram? petterd? frawley? chris johnson or holland maybe? givin we lost experience in doggy brown and bizzel among others it is no surprise someone needs to step up.
-
the problem with that is that no one will ever get a just reward for trading a champion player who chooses to leave. can you imagine judd saying im leaving and the best pick that can be offered for him is 17?
-
im of the opinion that we play kids who need a go, middle tier players who are playing for a round one spot, and senior players who need a practice match under their belt for fitness reasons (rivers, bartram, moloney are key examples because they didnt play much last year). if we win round one and two maybe we start to take a different approach to win the money.
-
i like what you have done there but i think the team is too short. you have named two tall forwards and two tall backs. bate will roam and has height but wont play as a stay at home tall forward. we need a third tall in defence also which means frawley or holland have to come in. at the expense of who? well im not sure if bell, whelan, petterd and bartram are all needed in the backline. play either petterd or bartram in the middle and you need to drop another mid. i think (and hope) wheatley runs in the midfield not off the backline, with bell taking the medium forwards...
-
i reckon we jump at it and put a clause in everyones contract that if they stuff up and get caught they suffer major financial penalty. If we could get 500K a year for a sponsorship surely we could afford to send each player 5 x $50 taxi vouchers for their nights home?
-
hopefully hopgood isnt in charge of kicking skills :S wonder if he has sold the ostrich farm?
-
holland differs from godfrey, ward, brown and pickett in that he is a tall and these are shorts. we have lots of young shorts ready to grab those spots meaning they were not required. bizzell - 3rd tall at best, floating medium defender at worst. past his best after a serious injury. ferguson - tall defender, no strength, weak third tall at best. neither of those players would be competing with holland for a spot in our side at any stage. if the skipper doesnt get up one week, holland can play at FF. holland can pinch hit at FB and CHF or take the third tall/resting ruckman. he has more versatility and we dont have many players who play his role, thus he has been retained as depth.
-
i like the sound of that bit. too many big strong players dont know how to use their body. hopefully he is a prospect who will/can.
-
or terrible management of his recovery up til now
-
interesting that he could play in the sandy firsts without at least being on a weights program... if thats truely the case i would expect summer to be about strengthening him up in the gym and teaching him how to kick on the track, as well as standard fitness stuff. i've just checked our website and he is already 95kg. if he hasnt been doing weights he is a big boy... edit:(apparently rex hunt called for him to be drafted in 2006! herald sun link

interesting point. most drills at training involve something like the kick out of full back to the flank, the flank centers it and the guy at CHF has a shot at goal, all the while each player runs to where they kicked it. a drill that forced players to think and hit targets as they show up...i wonder how that could be done.

Cheers CAC. Lots of people would have just left. You came and said goodbye. Thanks for your insights over the years. Thanks for putting in your best efforts for our club. All the best.
