Hibberd’s output was reduced in 2019 compared to his past standards due in part to the fact that he had to work in a defensive unit that was constantly undermanned through injury. The club will be looking for better things from the defender as he approaches his twilight years. King suggests the 2020 draft could be the most compromised ever, as 17 of the 48 players selected in this year’s Under-17 All-Stars game on Grand Final day were either Academy or father-son prospects.

Clayton Oliver had the most contested possessions in the league, showing an incredible ability to win the hard ball for someone of his age. He racked up 30 disposals and averaged 19 handballs per game in 2019. He is known for his fast hands in congestion and was one of his side’s most reliable performers for the year and won his second ‘Bluey’ in 2019. I guess I’ll put this here. Jordan Lewis on his move to the Demons.

A Hawthorn perspective on the trade.

PART SIX – THE DAY OF THE DEMONS Melbourne secured its second player of the trade and free agency period when it completed a deal that allowed pacy Docker Ed Langdon to return to his home state of Victoria. The deal was intertwined with the transaction that saw Demon defender Sam Frost land at Hawthorn with draft picks bouncing around like pinballs for a while. When the dust settled, the end result for Melbourne was that it filled two gaping holes in its lineup with Langdon and Adam Tomlinson, moved around second and third round picks - it now holds picks 26 and 50 (after trading away 22 and 42 and moving some later picks) and shuffled around its future second and fourth round picks. The Demons now have the two men they targeted and retained selections in each of the first three rounds of the national draft. Melbourne’s General Manager of Football Operations Josh Mahoney said 23-year-old Langdon’s ability to play the wing position was the main attraction for the club. Tomlinson is also likely to line up on a wing bringing about a radical alteration to the club’s match day structure. The Demons are not done yet. There is speculation that they and GWS will eventually do business over draft pick 3 which the Giants are eyeing in order to shore up their capacity to secure leading Academy prospect Thomas Green. The only other movement was a trade of picks involving the Brisbane Lions sending picks 46 and 91 to West Coast in exchange for picks 52 and 64. The result of the day saw the usual suspects mulling over the same old sad stories. Joe Daniher, Brad Hill and Carlton and St Kilda’s aspirations for the players they are desperately seeking to secure - all scenarios waiting for next week. DONE DEALS SATURDAY OCTOBER 5 • Brandon Ellis joins the Gold Coast Suns as a restricted free agent. Richmond receives a second-round draft pick as compensation (at the time, #39). • Cam Ellis-Yolmen joins Brisbane as an unrestricted free agent. Adelaide receives a third-round draft pick as compensation (at the time, #47). MONDAY OCTOBER 7 • Adam Tomlinson joins Melbourne as an unrestricted free agent. GWS Giants receive a second-round draft pick as compensation (at the time, #40). WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 9 • Tim Kelly joins the West Coast Eagles for picks 14, 24 and 37 in this year’s draft as well as the Eagles’ first-round pick in the 2020 AFL draft. The Eagles receive pick 57 and Geelong’s third round pick in 2020. THURSDAY OCTOBER 10 • St Kilda trade picks 6 and 59 to Greater Western Sydney and receive picks 12 and 18. FRIDAY OCTOBER 11 • Sam Frost joins Hawthorn for pick 50 and the Hawks’ future second rounder in a deal where the Demons also gave up picks 42, 61 and their future fourth round selection. • Ed Langdon joins Melbourne for picks 22 and 79 as well as the Demons’ future second round selection in a deal where Fremantle also gave up pick 26 and the Docker’s future fourth round pick. • The West Coast Eagles trade picks 52 and 64 to the Brisbane Lions for 46 and 91.

Note from AFL Trade Radio tweets: "We expect May and lever to play the majority of next year. We also have Oscar McDonald and Harrison Petty. Sam has a great opportunity at Hawthorn and he has a better offer at Hawthorn, so well done to Sam" - Josh Mahoney on Frost Mahoney: We can understand supporters asking us the question why we have let Sam go. We think we have a number of players who can play in our backline. There are a lot of players who can play that role Mahoney: We were satisfied with the deal. We looked at the Frost and Langdon deals as a bit of a package Mahoney on Langdon: The targets during this period were Tomlinson and Langdon. They both play important roles and bring a running power to our midfield "Maybe not during the trade period. it's an area we want to address, There might be some players on our list that can fill that role. We think we have enough power to kick winning scores" - Josh Mahoney on targeting a small forward Mahoney: We just didn't have any natural wingers on our list. It's such an important role. We tried over 15 guys in that positions this year and no one really nailed it. To be able to bring in two players who play that role will really add to the mix that we've got Mahoney: We won't get in the Brad Hill discussion. Once a player has made his mind up and is invested in it, it's fraught with danger. And we don't have the ability to be able to pay Brad Mahoney: The only question we've had for Angus Brayshaw was from Fremantle around the Langdon deal. But that was a very quick conversation. He'll be staying at the Dees Mahoney on Braydon Preuss: He really improved this year....we see him as a really important player for us. We had some clubs ask, but we're committed to having him on our list next year

They did not.

* Letting go of Sam Frost - does it leave us thin? - they don't think so, expect lever & may and oscar to have full pre-season and play all year * Understand fans will be surprised but we have lots of players that can play that role. * May & Lever can play tall lockdown and mobile defender role * Viewed the Langdon & Frost Trade as a package * Ed Langdon - Langdon & Tomlinson bring running power, brings in a need we needed to address, pacy wingmen * Won't explore small forward role in the trade period. believe our forward line in 2018 was good enough and hope it can do it again in 2020. * Having those wingmen adds flexibility to midfield to not have to play midfielders on wing who can now go to half forward or half back * Won't look at Brad Hill as the "other club" * Asked about Braydon Preuss - see him as an important back up player. Have had enquiries about him but he will stay. * Brayshaw - Freo briefly enquired and we were emphatic that he stay. * Doesn't sound like there will be any more changes in the coaching staff * Burgess started today.
