After leading the club’s goal kicking last year with 53 goals, McDonald struggled with form for most of the season and only started kicking goals again after the bye round. Kicked 6 goals in less than three quarters against the Blues but a knee injury incurred in that match derailed his season. I guess we need to bookend this affair. Frosty in the poos and wees.

In limbo: There are only two Dees out of contract, but both Jay Kennedy Harris and Billy Stretch (pictured) currently appear unlikely to be at the club next season. Melbourne targeted run throughout the trade period, with Adam Tomlinson and Ed Langdon joining. Delisted: Jeff Garlett, Declan Keilty Retired: Jordan Lewis, Corey Maynard, Tim Smith, Guy Walker

“He ended up having a really consistent VFL year – he played 21 games. He started off down back but finished off the year as an inside-mid which is probably where he looked most natural. He’s got really good movement within stoppages, he’s really good over the ball and is a nice kick. He developed into a really consistent player in the VFL and he’s really durable. I think his training loads were really high during the year – he loves training – so he’s finished with a really good year and got a lot of learnings out of playing a lot of footy.” - Matt Egan MFC Head of Player Development An update on the first-year Demons Date of Birth: 20 December, 2000 Height: 186 cm Weight: 80 kg Games MFC 2019: 0 Career Total: 0 Goals MFC 2019: 0 Career Total: 0 CDFC Games 2019: 18 CDFC Goals 2019: 3

Demon fans were jubilant when he rejected an offer to play for the Swans last year. The bad news was that a foot injury kept him out of football for the entire season. Has averaged only 7 games a season in his five years at the club so is due for a change of luck. MELBOURNE IN: Adam Tomlinson, Ed Langdon, pick 8, 2020 second-round pick (Haw), 2020 fourth-round (Fre) OUT: Sam Frost, picks 22, 42, 61, 79, 2020 first-round, 2020 second-round, 2020 fourth-round DRAFT PICKS: 3, 8 BUCKENARA SAYS: Tomlinson adds versatility and Langdon much-needed pace and outside run, so they’ve slightly improved their list. The pressure will be on everyone at Melbourne to bounce back and have a good year next year because trading their 2020 first and second-round picks plus picks 26 and 50 this year to North Melbourne for pick 8 is a big risk. If they finish bottom four again or fail to make finals that first-round pick will be top 10. Ouch. This draft is strong for classy midfielders with pace, which is exactly what the Demons need so clearly they’ve got their eye on a couple of players in particular. Time will tell. RATING: 7/10

It seems all the talk going into this years National Draft is whether we split Pick 3 or who do we target with our Top 10 picks. I want to know who we're going to target with the all important Pick 97.

When he was traded into the club 12 months ago, he was expected to add versatility to the list but his appearances were rare and, apart from the day when he beat Matthew Kruezer (in Max Gawn’s absence), he hasn’t exactly set the world in fire. https://m.afl.com.au/news/2019-10-16/trade-period-ranked-from-worst-to-best-whos-in-out-draft-hand In: Ed Langdon, Adam Tomlinson, pick No.8, 2020 round two pick (Hawthorn), 2020 round four pick (Fremantle) Out: Sam Frost, pick No.22, pick No.42, pick No.61, pick No.79, 2020 round one pick, 2020 round two pick, 2020 round four pick 2019 draft picks: 3, 8 What they couldn't get done: The Demons made clear a fair way out that they were open to 'splitting' their No.3 draft pick and nothing eventuated but there is still plenty of time for that. Chose not to upgrade their small forward stocks in the Trade Period and could look to do so with their extra top-10 pick now. Verdict: So much depends on whether Melbourne can rebound into a finals or even premiership contender next year after the pick swap with the Roos. However, the Dees addressed their lack of run and happily traded Frost. –Marc McGowan Rating: 7.5/10 Rank: 5th

Remember when Port won the trade period and then didn’t make the finals. Fun times.

PART NINE - DEADLINE DAY We all know that the AFL was playing us for suckers - that the trade period finale was set up to match the glitz, glamour, intrigue and argy bargy of the media reality circus. Why else would they hold up some of the day’s trade announcements until 3.00pm and then leave the drama of the tough stuff to evening prime time television? We all knew most deals would be done and it was a matter of timing. Suck in the viewers and readers and let them bathe in expectation. Joe Daniher’s mind was fixed on moving north but perhaps his groins were never going to be worth picks 5 and 9. As the clock struck half past seven in the evening, the following players had moved clubs on deadline day:- Blake Acres (Fremantle), Callum Ah Chee (Brisbane), James Aish (Fremantle), Aiden Bonar (North Melbourne), Josh Bruce (Western Bulldogs), Dan Butler (St Kilda), Tom Cutler (Essendon), Bradley Hill (St Kilda), Josh Jenkins (Geelong), Zak Jones (St Kilda), Alex Keath (Western Bulldogs), Andrew Phillips (Essendon), Marc Pittonet (Carlton), Zac Smith (Gold Coast), Jack Steven (St Kilda) and Lewis Taylor (Sydney). The trades that didn’t transpire were - Joe Daniher remains a Bomber, Tom Papley remains in Sydney and, for the time being, Jack Martin stays a Suns’ player and Melbourne holds onto pick 3. And there’s still six weeks to go to the draft. DONE DEALS SATURDAY OCTOBER 5 • Brandon Ellis joins the Gold Coast Suns as a restricted free agent.
