SEN interview with Josh Mahoney

Featured Replies

Firstly Josh Mahoney comes across as an extremely intelligent and well spoken person. Here's a summary of responses to the player related questions:

I've been impressed by a few players that I didn't know much about, being Colin Garland, James Frawley and Buckley.

Brock McLean, Nathan Jones and Brad Miller have the best work ethic.

Ricky Petterd is currently at 75%, and will join in full training shortly.

Aaron Davey will have short bursts in the midfield.

Fairly typical SEN Morning Glory interview. You don't get much!

Probably explains why Miller has made it back into the leadership group despite the protestations of some outsiders.

His comments about Miller having a strong work ethic, certainly explains how he could poll well in the leadership voting during preaseason.

It's exciting to hear about two of our developing key position players impressing .....These guys are like finding Gold and finding them has been a long time coming

Thanks Mo.

I thing Garland could be a real improver this year. He showed some glimpes of real class at Sandringham last season. From all reports he's really stacked on some muscle and is training the house down. Don't be surprised if he is a walk up start in our best 22 by the end of the season.

And where do you think he will play from what you have seen/ heard?

He's a goal kicker so I'd like to see him up forward but a forward line with Neitz, Newton, Robertson and Garland seems abit top heavy so I'm not sure.

Perhaps that is a sacrafice that they need to make in order to blood a replacement/s for Neitz.

Although, any experience in the backline this year should serve as a good apprenticeship for a future career in the forwardline. From what I have seen, he is reasonably capable below his knees aswell

For what it is worth, he is my tip for the biggest improver this year.

Heard Buckley's name mentioned in a few of these off-season reports as one who has been impressing. Let's hope he can take a step up this season and cement his place in the 22 and give us a bit of pace and run through the midfield.

Garland is an interesting one can't say I was overly impressed with anything I saw last season but that's to be expected I guess as he gets a feel for it at the highest level, I to would like to see him played up forward rather than down back this year.

One Garland, put him down back for a couple of years, get a good defensive side to his game and then put him up forward

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
