Belly the backman - polled a BOG in the Brownlow

Might have been the only true defender to poll a best on ground in the Brownlow last night

Fair effort from a great young player

I am content in the knowledge that I backed him the entire 2006 season when every other person on this board was saying he wasn't AFL standard

Shame on you all

you might have backed in 2006 season but I reckon he was great in 2007 season....and will take out MFC Best and Fairest"07.

he was not up to afl standard at the start of 2006.... it was great to see im come soo far

well done belly

No, he was. It was just that he needed time and experience to grow into the role. Not many young players come into the side and are immediately up to AFL standard. But you can tell that some have the right attributes to make it if given time. We knew Bell would make it, it was just a matter of time. People that labeled him "no good" have been proven wrong.

Yeah, every other person on this board was saying that...

Well done to Belly for polling the three. As I said in the Brownlow thread, it was great of the umps to recognise the perfect defensive game and reward the player accordingly.

Jaded and I were also telling most that Belly would step up and was a good player.

Right...

Do your homework YM... Jaded and I were fighting for this guy with EVERYONE we could get our hands on. There were a dedicated few that could see his quality LONG before he came good this year... you're not the only one who got it right with him.

I backed him here as I did on 'ology.

As for '06 and doing homework, BB would e wise to take note that Bell was crippled with OP for the bulk of the season and stepped up the first chance he got late in the season.

You guys must feel like proud parents ;) :D !!!

I am not going to sit here and say "I told you so" regarding his ability (although I have always believed he will be good), but it does go to show that we need to show some faith and give some time to these kids. They aren't robots who will become brilliant at the drop of a hat or on our very limited timetables.

Belly has been one of the few bright lights in a very grim season, and hopefully it was only the tip of the iceburg for his form and potential.

No i didn't back him all the way, but i saw a lot of promise towards the end of 06 and that hard me a little excited. He would've been a runaway for the B&F this year had he not gotten injured.

Well done to him polling a BOG from the umps.

Belly looks a very strong and balanced footballer could he be a midfielder because he looks alot stronger than Jonno and macca

Im still going to say that Bell is not that good as everyone makes him out to be.

In a struggling year where most players didn't perform Bell was our best defender by a mile.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
