Poor fourth quarters are infectious.

When do the Casey boys do their balls out match sim ??

Hard to believe fitness is not an issue when we see consistently poor 4th quarter output

For those that didn’t watch the game, don’t be fooled by looking purely at the stats. There was an overuse of little handballs and short kick mark short kick mark play. A lot of stats were completely ineffective. The game was scrappy with lots of congested play, ball ups and slow short play. It only opened up late and that’s when the Dogs and the umpires overwhelmed the Casey team.

Any of the Casey boys get a blatant trip that was missed by the umps or do they just save that sort of stuff for Kozzy who imo always seems to get a bad run from them (and the tribunal)

TESTAMENT by KC from Casey

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong?

Everything.

The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break.

Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind.

Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

Casey’s VFL contingent served the team well with Riley Baldi (25 touches), Mitch Hardie (24), Riley Bonner (20) and, Lachlan Bryce (19) were all prominent while the team was in the ascendancy and Cross contributed three of the team’s nine goals for the day.

The rucks of Tom Campbell and his understudy Will Verrall were dominant for most of the game winning 41 and 14 hitouts respectively, the former finishing up with 21 possessions and  10 clearances. Verrall also had 12 disposals.

Casey’s best was Bailey Laurie who had 27 disposals to go with his six clearances while Kynan Brown’s performance also pressed his claim for an AFL return with his 25 possessions, seven clearances and ten tackles.

Forwards Tom Fullarton and Aidan Johnson contributed three and two goals respectively. Johnson’s former Werribee teammate Jack Henderson was effective with 23 disposals and Oliver Sestan continued to show his improvement, as did defenders Jed Adams and Luker Kentfield while Jai Culley also had his moments.

The Demons return to Casey Fields next Saturday where they take on 2024 grand finalists, the Southport Sharks in what should be another tough battle.

Mitch Hardie, Riley Baldi and Lachlan Bryce deserve at a minimum honourable mentions.

Agree

Mitch Hardie should probably still be on an AFL list. Casey is lucky to have him. Has good efficiency and uses the footy. Has a good goal sense when around the forward 50.

Lachy Bryce was solid across half back. His intercept marking was good. Not only got the footy but had several good spoils and blocks. One to keep an eye on and should get more regular games.

Baldi was good and is solid at this level. Tight and tough at the contest. However often stats can deceive as many of his handballs were 30cms handballs in close to no effect. Though I like his grunt and is the sought of heart and soul type.

Riley Baldi was not as prominent or prolific as previous weeks, perhaps its harder to get off the chain at the 'kennel'. But is a most improved player on his return to Casey from a sojourn in Gippsland. Where he won a league best and fairest i believe.

Bryce is a good size for a flanker (191cm according to a Smithy's commentator) reads the flight of the ball, moves and contests well.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
