My dream fwd line of a few decades ago would be possibly a combo of

A. Jacko

G.Lion

Neita

Robbo

Farmer

Schwartz

Yes pretty awesome. For balance and some pressure I’d play Jurrah and Davey with Robbo interchange and Neita at CHB.

A. Jakovich

G. Lyon

J. Farmer

D. Schwartz

L. Jurrah

A. Davey

If we could pick current players I’d have Davey on the bench and Pickett in.

Agreed. One of the best ever. Bennett was badly beaten by Hamilton, then that great coach Sheedy took Hamilton off firm and put Vanderhar on him. Bennett went mad!!!!!

Ditto, standing in the outer, one of favourite MFC matches, came from about 40 points down if I recall, Essendon had our measure until late 3rd qtr when Rhode went on to Michael Long who was destroying us. Rhode then completely shut down Long, last qtr momentum was like a tidal wave, Bennent and Ricky Jackson🔥. A magnificent day I’ll never forget.

If only we could have kept Bennett and Jakovich together for longer???

Most of the first 3 quarters we were down by 20-25 points, we weren’t being thrashed, but it certainly didn’t look like a win.
At the 20 minute mark of the Final Quarter we were 22 points down and came home, Ricky Jackson slotted one from the pocket near where i was, i think Sugar Healy kicked a beauty as well.

I was supposed to be there but my older brothers wouldn’t take as they were going with all of their Essendon mates and didn’t want me there.

How good was Ricky Jackson back in the day?!!! Another thread for another time. Time to head off to the G.

I agree the margin was generally around 4 goals and Essendon definitely looked to have our measure, thought the margin got to over six goals at one stage but it was a long time ago.

I have the last qtr replay on VHS ( always wanted to digitise my library but tech is not my thing) Will dust off the Video player soon and give it a watch.

Jackson’s goal was from the outer pocket I seem to remember, can’t recall if it was a banana or drop punt? Also not far from where I was.

Nb. IMO A Ricky Jackson clone, fast, great crumber, goal sense, x factor would be a much needed addition to our 22. Yes,  Pickett has all those attributes however as a duo our forward line would be extremely potent.

Pity, would have been something to behold, standing amongst Don supporters during that last qtr.

Ricky Jackson was a star and very important to the success of that side. Rather under appreciated IMO.
Seemed to often turn a game with his burst of magic. Then he just seemed to fade away and was gone and I never knew why. Maybe someone might know what happened to him.

Enjoy tonight.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
