This has been one of my biggest complaints / observations for years - even way back when Ox and Neitz were there.    Always congested.
Is it laziness or lack of coaching?   Carlton are doing it well.

This is why i'd be aiming for a top line recently retired ex forward to come in and sort this hot mess of ours out Mono.

It's beyond the pale that it's still happening now after so many years under Simon.

Very amature stuff for far too long.  Too many seasons, lists and high quality mids, defenders and others wasted along the way.

I'd be aiming at a top liner who's done and seen it all.... IF they're willing.

Entice them with a medium term three year plus contract on heavy coin.

They'd be worth their weight in gold imv and the improvements would be relatively quick i would think.  At least after a pre-season and about one season of live matches to nail the changes down.

Examples who've had sustained impact & success might include...

Recently played / retired or likely to retire in 2024...

👉🏼  Tom Hawkins

👉🏼  Ablett Jnr.   Played extensively with great success through the middle as well as HF.  Would bring some incredible experience and knowledge / perspective in terms of bringing unison, communication and cohesion.

👉🏼  Jack Riewoldt

👉🏼  Jake Melksham*

👉🏼  Other?

Close to retirement but might be able to  bring some on field coaching,  guidance & value if snared and can play on for another season or parts of a season in 2025 (including a few Casey games to assist the likes of Jeffo / other forwards)...

👉🏼  Tex Walker

👉🏼  Tom Hawkins

👉🏼  Jake Melksham*

👉🏼  Other?

*No slight on Jake and just my opinion but would ideally prefer an outsider to assess and ring in the changes

What does Greg Stafford a former ruckman know about forward craft?

on the evidence….

i don’t believe you have to have been an elite practitioner player to be a good coach of forwards but some experience might be considered essential

Role players are always important but midfielders are more so.

Not grat role players OR the right one for a teams needs, this is what’s changing my Friend! The very definition of role players is no longer Steve Kerr or Jud Buechler for Jordan’s Bulls — but now more Mihocek or Nibbler & Rick, in a team full of almost exclusively just role players, alongside a twinkling of stars of course!

Depending on the side, the right role player can make them a contender, whereas the star mids impact is declining almost weekly — still valuable, but the 73rd best mid can have 90% of the impact of a top 10 mid — only the true cream Ala Trac, Heeney, Bont being the exception to that rule!

Yeah.. cus I don’t think he’d have to of demonstrated much forward craft knowledge to together the role would he? Probs not..haha

Not to be narcy, but you see my OTT point though right? I’m sure many had same thought — but it’s just something we can never really know (whether he as a had coach isn’t up to snuff I mean) for sure — But we can know that not many of the premium line coaches, only coach the position they played.

Caving into his demands? Perhaps squeezes a little more out of their salary cap limiting other FA targets like B.Smith.

  1. How many acres of farmland is he receiving OTB, and
  2. At the end of his career, I bet 2024 ends up being the standout year.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
