Recent rule changes fail objectives

The 6-6-6 rule has probably been the best one they've brought in. Stops a team from sending everyone back with a minute to go and gives the other side a chance if they need a goal late to win a game.

The ruck nomination rule needs to go ASAP. It just allows more players to get to the contest and that results in less flow.

The stand rule hasn't really done anything for the game other than allow players to run way around when shooting for goal and it looks ridiculous when they are going past the man on the mark and he can't do anything.

I think if they get rid of those two the game will be a lot better.

Obviously they need to be better at adjudicating the HTB rule as well, but regarding rule changes the ruck nomination and stand rule should go.

I am a fan of the standing the mark rule for set shots at goal. It used to really [censored] me when the player standing the mark would run at our set shot kicker, run over the mark, smother the ball and not get pinged by an umpire looking the other way.

I know it's unpopular but I'd change to 16 on the field like AFLW, maybe even 15, and strengthen the interchange cap to limit congestion. I'd also reduce to 16 minute quarters, the game goes for too long IMHO.

couldn't agree more

it will open up space on the field, but i wouldn't do it in conjunction with a reduced quarter length

i would however make it so that you only play every team once in the home and away season; ironically that would be easier to achieve with the introduction of a 19th team and the necessity of a bye

I don't think it's a terrible idea at all. Maybe trial it in preseason.

I never used to want to shorten the game but for the first time ever I've realised how long it is. I know the score reviews drag it out but it's still long. I'd probably go to 18 min quarters first though.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
