You're absolutely correct. Not too mention, this is something that hits close to home and was one of the constant criticisms of Bailey (especially on this forum at times) during his tenure at the Dees too.

Funny you should mention bails. He came to my mind too.

I was thinking about the irony of roos saying, after the dees, coached by bails, ran up a cricket score against the swans at the g (iirc, Roos' biggest losing margin as coach?) that we were going to be a power team.

I think I'm right in saying that roos sad that game was a factor in his decision to coach us.

And roos gave us goody. So we have bails to thank for our flag!

Bails was so unlucky to get sacked. I understand the impact of the 164 game, but that was 100% on the players and was a manifestation of our woeful, shambolic governance.

And also a manifestation of our toxic culture in the playing group (anyone seriously knocking our culture now only need to think about that period to understand what a poor culture really looks like - and it's corrosive impact).

Under bails, when on, we played exciting, attacking footy. Great to watch.

But as you suggest the defensive issues (that bails would have addressed if given time) we also got opened up

But we still had an outside chance of making finals when bails got sacked.

Bails was the classic scapegoat an was treated appallingly by the club. And his players hung him out to dry with their pathetic display agains the cats. Still makes me furious.

I tell you what, Joey Montagna is all over the Dee’s and I like it!

He was also all over us in pre season (as well as prior years) while most others lead by David King and Matthew Lloyd were dropping off.

And Anthony Hudson in Fox Footy's "First Crack" show has us as the number 1 ranked side in the league right now. As much as I like this, I'm not 100% in agreement with it.

History shows that at some stage during the year, Kingy will say why each team can't win the flag. He will eventually be proven right in 94% of cases.  Genius!

Having a tall, mobile and hard hitting backline makes a huge difference and helps out the smaller players so much.

Good to see May roaming the and owning the backline and taking marks at whim.

Yeh.... nah.

What was that all about anyway?

Two former premiership comrades and Demon immortals.

By all means play hard uncompromising footy but this felt like May was on some sort of vendetta and out to prove a point.

Did Harmes tick him off earlier in the match or something?

Ye Harmes threw a headbutt the little coward

Why?

Harmes running around mouthing off

Played terrible also

I love May’s aggression. He would strike fear into many forwards.

He is a critical bookend for us - stating the obvious

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
