Melbourne 11.11.77 defeated Sydney Swans 7.14.56 at the SCG in Round 24, 2023.

It was a massive team effort in a dead rubber for the Demons against a side that had a lot to fight for in their last home game for the year.

The midfield starred, Bayley Fritsch managed five goals in his return from injury after giving us all a bit of a fright and Jake Melksham cruelly suffered an ACL injury that ended his season of resurgence.

This was the club’s most recent victory (leaving aside this week’s scratch match vs Carlton which doesn’t count).

Ironically, two players not selected by Melbourne for this game, Brodie Grundy and James Jordan are almost certain starters for the Swans next Thursday.

We can expect possibly seven changes to the Melbourne lineup for the return game against Sydney with the following likely outs:-

Angus Brayshaw (retired), Lachie Hunter, Jake Melksham, Daniel Turner (injured), Clayton Oliver (managed?) and Kozzy Pickett & Joel Smith (suspended).

That’s a lot missing in such a short space of time but let’s not forget the David Parkin principle which says that for clubs to win flags, they need to constantly turn over new talent and he thought having five new faces in a team each year was good for the cause.

Last time we met, Milkshake was playing out of his skin.

Losing him set the tone for our finals.

I hope we put them in their place again for pretending to be a chance in 2022.

We have quite a few out since our last meeting but they have Grundy so it all balances out.

We will definitely be going into this game with a young side.

Young legs and keen to impress.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.
