Dees considering big trade plays

Great insight. Cal Twomey really putting himself out there as one of the best journo's in the land when it comes to the draft.

Couldn't agree more, he really is the new Shifter as far as research and prep goes.

It wasn't in this article, but I found it interesting that Cal said we were trying to trade up higher than pick 13, to make sure we got Jefferson. He was clearly one of our main targets.

An excellent insight into the wheeling and dealing of the first round draft night.  While not much happened there was a lot happening behind the scene.  trades-that-didn-t-come-off and unsurprisingly we were in the thick of it!  I wonder who we had in mind for GWS's (initial) pick #19?

There are few unknowns between the clubs at draft time.

Sydney's bids and trades were the only interesting aspect of the whole draft.  .

While Twomey had a fair bit of the info before the draft, I'm guessing the finer details have been provided to him in the last week.

Fascinating reading.

I suspect it would have been Barnett we were targeting. There were multiple articles highlighting our interest in him and we obviously felt ruck depth was a need with Verrall eventually selected in the Rookie draft. I wonder who we would have selected though if Allan happened to somehow still be available, another player we were strongly linked to.

Had Sydney not done their nonsense Allan would’ve been available. Fairly safe to assume given Cal and others reporting that it would’ve come down to Allan or Barnett.

I wonder if it would’ve been the Freo pick or our own to get the deal done. Guess we’ll have to wait 12 months to see where those picks end up and the talent available

I have a sneaking suspicion Hewett might’ve been our best case result at pick 15 and the player we’d have traded up for to picks 11-13 to get ahead of the eagles.

He’s such a Melbourne type player - aggressive, physical, great agility - and interest had cooled in him for a top 12 pick. Eagles were leaking interest in Jefferson, we were leaking interest in Allan.

What if both sides were just trying to throw each other off the scent of their number 1 target in that range all along?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
