2022 Player Reviews: #27 Luke Dunstan

Recruited from the Saints to fill the understudy role for the club’s strong midfield, Dunstan was rarely called upon to play that role. Was outstanding at Casey and was one of the best on ground in the premiership victory.

"The former Saint played just five senior games in his first season with the Demons, but was named Melbourne’s best VFL player for 2022 and was also second in the Casey Demons’ best-and-fairest award. The midfielder had 31 disposals in Casey’s premiership win." - Herald Sun

Should’ve been utilised in the finals if you believe that we had up to 11 injuries.

His 38 possession/2 goal VFL final against Sydney should've been rewarded down the track.

It wouldn’t surprise me if he gets more games next year, we had to teach him our game and de-St Kilda him.

I’m not a great fan but, like all players, he needs confidence and how could anyone playing at St Kilda have any.

Luke had a great year at Casey and had a big impact in the Casey GF, hopefully Luke will get more game time next year. We really must reward effort and he will be fitter and tougher next year.!!

Deserving of more games than he got, he performed well in the few he was given. Hard at it, four quarter effort. Kicking, particularly distance, better than suggested around here. Gets in good places and not intimidated by physical contact. I think he is important in our current profile.

Agree with the general consensus here. If his performance at the VFL Grand Final  exemplifies his courage, ability and intent. Given appropriate opportunity Luke is on the cusp of becoming a valued member of the senior team.

As others have already noted his ball skills on a wet slippery surface were terrific as was his attack on the ball. Kicked a memorable check side goal at pace, from tight in the forward pocket in the third quarter at the Sydney Road end.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
