Indeed, but I'm grateful that they are annually remembered. What makes our club special is the quality of its people. I'm much happier and feel much better rewarded to have been a member of a club with people like Sean Wight, irrespective of our onfield results. Premierships are the cream; the people are the substance.

Sean Wight kicked one of the most spectacular goals I've ever seen in AFL / VFL football.  In this play on a grey day at the MCG, he was one-out with his opponent in the goal square when a Melbourne player kicked to the top of the square from about 45m out from the forward flank.  The ball was sailing over the heads of Sean and his opponent, heading for a behind, when Sean stuck his foot out and volleyed the ball through for a goal!  🤪  Amazing.

The fans erupted, as you'd imagine.  Unfortunately, the game wasn't televised so the highlight wasn't recorded and kept for posterity.  A great shame.

I've since watched a bit of soccer and seen one or 2 of these volleys from long-range passes; take Tim Cahill's goal against the Netherlands in the 2010 World Cup as an example.  Maybe Sean's soccer background sowed the seeds for his audacious play though it was mind-blowingly novel to us footy fans in the 1980's.

I always wanted to name my first son Sean (not Shaun) because this courageous man captured my imagination as a child. Now I don't actually want kids at all, but I still have a soft spot for our brave Irish Scotsman. R.I.P.

Sean is one of my all-time favourites.  I sat with him on the picket fence at the G waaaay back when training was there.  He'd done his knee and could only watch on.  That picket fence was extremely uncomfortable but it was nice sitting there with him.  He remembered me all the way through (why was I so shy?  Jeez, he seemed like a ripper bloke), waving to me whenever he saw me at training or outside the rooms after a game.

I'll never forget the heart in my mouth feeling of watching him defend the goal square, oh god, Sean, don't hurt yourself again!
