Mick McGuane Rates The Forward Lines: Where Are We?

Featured Replies

In the Hun today, MM rates the forward lines (we rated 1st for midfield).

Can someone tell us where we ranked as I don't have access to the paper and his key reasons for our rating?

Don't have time to mention his points but he rates us number 1.

The question is where he rated us last year, given that his article is basically a regurgitation of last year's ladder. Answer = 8th.

He also rated our midfield 12th and defence 8th ahead of the 2021 season, so take his opinion with a grain of salt.

Fritsch put it all together last year which clearly gave us a huge boost, he's a match up nightmare. As well as Pickett really improving in a hurry. Spargo, ANB and our midfield options are good too. We could do with a bit more depth/class/size in the back up mids though so we've got some overhead ability if needed.

Clearly we're talented but I think number 1 is a bit of a leap given our talls. Weid's can't make the leap up to the level and Brown and McDonald probably are going to battle to be consistently at full fitness and in their best form

Brisbane with 3 talls in their prime once Hipwood recovers, plus Cameron, McCarthy and with the likes of Bailey, Zorko and Rayner rotating through are the number 1 forward line. Geelong should be number 2 if their coach moves the ball. If Bruce was fit and/or JUH came on quickly the Dogs would be up there as they were last year.

Something like 3-5th would be a very good result but really are aim should be to have the big boys fit and firing at the right time.

If I remember correctly:

Mick said that individually we were near the best midfield, just under Dogs, but because we are now team oriented and look to handball out of stoppages, we have become the best Midfield.

  • PREVIEW: Brisbnae

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
