* The Oxford Don Rev. WA Spooner, that is! As promised, Too-Much-Time-On-Your-Hands-Puzzle-Nerds😉

This team would be considerably more competitive than the VFL/AFL team he named. At least in the current series...

1. Swamp-ed Spanish fishing boat?     2. Crumbs?!     3. She pretends to go up the hill?     4. Tapestry shop?    5. Artist Ken's 'Denim Period'?     6. That man waits in line.     7. Rustle, saying, '______ ___  stones...'     8. Cheese off market?     9. Trick type.     10. Surround Shirley     11. Hay, gathered then cropped!     12th man. 10 marks for German?

I wish you the opposite of what William Archibald, quoting me, might appear to wish you: 'Crappy hacking!'

Hitting boundaries @Demonstone! (0.1 of a mark off for 'Done Jeans', though: it's 'Jean Dones'😁)

Ten to go.

9. Bruce Reid. Ruse Breed.

I'll leave some for WCW and MR.

We're in trouble if he's bowling for Australia.😁

With omicron, not beyond the realm of possibility. 😬

Also hitting boundaries, @mo64! And generously rotating the strike 👍

@WalkingCivilWar, you can have @Demonstone's forfeited 0.1 mark for your No.6

At first glance, I thought No. 4 was Mitch Starc / Stitch Mart but that doesn't quite work.

I'm afraid so.

@mo64 has decided to score the odd mental run standing at the non-strikers end. He has this one

Seems I’m having a touch of the Haseeb Hameeds right now. Ie, barely getting off the mark. 😄

Mother of god these are hard! Maybe it’s just me (?)

Your You're not on your own WCW. I'm racking my brain with the rest.

Oops. I better edit before Stone reads it.

Yeah but at least you’ve got your eye in.

Is no. 1 Brad Hogg?

No. 7: Steve Rixon???

Nice one. Thieve / Sticks and Stones. I knew it was Steve, but could only think of Waugh and Smith.

I actually thought it was gonna be the surname Dixon. I made an already hard puzzle even harder by providing my own red herring. 😆

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
